- Signs: displacement, velocity and acceleration have direction (they are vectors, സദിശ അളവുകൾ). Choose one direction as positive (+) – east, forward or the direction of motion; the opposite direction is negative (−). Say which one you chose.
- Distance ദൂരം = length of the path; displacement സ്ഥാനാന്തരം = straight line from start to end, with direction.
- Speed വേഗം = distance ÷ time; velocity പ്രവേഗം v = s/t (unit m/s). Acceleration ത്വരണം a = (v − u)/t (unit m/s²).
- Equations of motion (uniform acceleration only): v = u + at; s = ut + ½at²; v² = u² + 2as. 1 km/h = 5/18 m/s; 1 minute = 60 s.
- On a v–t graph: slope = acceleration; area under the graph = displacement.
Problem 1 · Two paths from P via Q – Fig 2.2 (page 29)
N1. Two different paths along which a child travelled from P via Q are shown (Fig 2.2).
സ്ഥാനാന്തരം എത്ര?In Fig 2.2 (a), what is the distance travelled? What is the displacement?
സ്ഥാനാന്തരം എത്ര?In Fig 2.2 (b), what is the distance travelled? What is the displacement?
In which case are the magnitude of displacement and the distance equal?
Distance: add up the lengths of every piece of the path actually walked. Displacement: only look at where the child started and where the child stopped – the straight line from start to end, with its direction.
(a) Distance = PQ + QR = 60 m + 40 m = 100 m. Displacement = PR = 80 m, from P towards R.
(b) Distance = 60 m + 40 m = 100 m. Displacement = PS = 100 m, from P towards S.
(c) In Fig 2.2 (b) – the child moves along a straight line in one direction.
The magnitude of displacement equals the distance travelled only when an object moves along a straight path in one direction.
Writing “displacement = 100 m” in (a) too. The walk was 100 m long, but the child ended up only 80 m from P. Displacement is never more than the distance – and it needs a direction (P → R).
Problem 2 · Interval walk in the school – Fig 2.3, Table 2.3 (page 30)
N2. During the interval a child goes from class 9 B to the staff room, then to the statue of the Father of the Nation in the school garden, and then back to the class via the school office. Complete Table 2.3 for the child's journey. (From the corridor in front of 9 B: staff room 15 m east, office 15 m west; statue 60 m south along a straight line; curved path staff room → statue 70 m; curved path office → statue 80 m.)
Keep a running total of the distance (an “odometer”). For displacement, draw one straight arrow from 9 B to wherever the child is at that moment. When the child is back in 9 B, the arrow has no length.
| Path of the child | Distance (m) | Displacement (m) |
|---|---|---|
| 9 B → front of the staff room | 15 | 15 m east |
| 9 B → staff room → near the statue | 15 + 70 = 85 | 60 m south |
| back in 9 B (via statue → office → 9 B) | 15 + 70 + 80 + 15 = 180 | 0 |
The child's legs (and a pedometer) count 180 m, but the displacement after the full round is zero – start and end are the same point. This is exactly why the average velocity for a round trip is zero, even though the average speed is not.
Problem 3 · Speed and velocity from Fig 2.4 (pages 30–32)
N3. A child starting from P reaches R via Q in 18 s (PQ = 40 m in 8 s, QR = 50 m in 10 s, PR = 72 m).
- P യിൽ നിന്ന് Q വഴി R എന്ന സ്ഥലത്ത് എത്താൻ കുട്ടി സഞ്ചരിച്ച ആകെ ദൂരം എത്ര?What is the total distance travelled from P to R via Q?
- കുട്ടി P യിൽ നിന്ന് Q വഴി R ലേക്ക് യാത്ര ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ കുട്ടിയുടെ വേഗം എത്ര?What is the child's speed from P to R via Q?
ഇതിന്റെ ദിശ ഏതാണ്?What is the displacement? Find the displacement per second (the velocity). What is its direction (P → R / R → P / P → Q → R)?
ഇതിൽ നിന്നും നിങ്ങൾക്ക് എത്തിച്ചേരാവുന്ന നിഗമനങ്ങളേവ?Calculate the child's speed and velocity from P to Q in Fig 2.4. What conclusions can you draw?
Speed uses the distance (90 m); velocity uses the displacement (72 m). Both are divided by the whole time, 18 s. From P to Q the path is straight, so distance and displacement are both 40 m.
(a) Distance = 40 m + 50 m = 90 m.
(b) Speed = distance/time = 90 m ÷ 18 s = 5 m/s.
(c) Displacement = PR = 72 m (P → R). Velocity v = s/t = 72 m ÷ 18 s = 4 m/s, in the direction P → R (the same direction as the displacement).
(d) P to Q: speed = 40 m ÷ 8 s = 5 m/s; velocity = 40 m ÷ 8 s = 5 m/s (P → Q). Conclusion: on a straight path in one direction, the speed equals the magnitude of the velocity; on a bent path the velocity is smaller.
Using the distance for velocity (90/18 = 5 m/s) – that is the speed. Velocity needs the displacement: 72/18 = 4 m/s, and its direction P → R.
Problem 4 · A train crossing a bridge (page 31)
A train 200 m long travels with a velocity of 20 m/s. How much time will it take to cross a straight bridge 800 m long? (This is the question from the opening picture of the chapter.)
Watch the engine. The crossing is over only when the last coach leaves the bridge – by then the engine has gone the bridge length plus the train's own length.
Bridge 800 m, speed 20 m/s (forward = +). A longer train needs longer to clear the same bridge.
t = s/v = 1000 m ÷ 20 m/s = 50 s.
Using only the bridge: 800/20 = 40 s. At 40 s the engine is just leaving the bridge, but 200 m of coaches are still on it.
Problem 5 · Two quick velocity questions (page 32)
N5.
A vehicle moving along a straight line with a velocity of 25 m/s travels 400 m. Calculate the time taken.
- 36 m/s പ്രവേഗത്തോടെ സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു വസ്തുവിന് ഒരു മിനിറ്റിൽ ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന സ്ഥാനാന്തരമെത്ര?What is the displacement of an object moving with a velocity of 36 m/s in one minute?
Rearrange v = s/t: t = s/v and s = vt. In (b) change 1 minute into 60 seconds first.
(a) v = 25 m/s, s = 400 m; t = s/v = 400 m ÷ 25 m/s = 16 s.
(b) v = 36 m/s, t = 1 minute = 60 s; s = vt = 36 m/s × 60 s = 2160 m (2.16 km) in the direction of motion.
In (b), writing 36 × 1 = 36 m. The velocity is “per second”, so the time must be in seconds: 1 min = 60 s.
Problem 6 · v = u + at and finding a (page 35)
N6.
A car moving along a straight path at 10 m/s is given an acceleration of 5 m/s². Calculate its velocity after 2 s.
The velocity of an object moving at 4 m/s becomes 28 m/s in 4 s. Calculate its acceleration.
a = (v − u)/t. Multiply both sides by t: v − u = at, so v = u + at. In (a) u is not zero – the car was already moving.
Make a negative: the line slopes down – the velocity decreases (retardation).
(a) u = 10 m/s, a = 5 m/s², t = 2 s. v = u + at = 10 + 5 × 2 = 20 m/s.
(b) u = 4 m/s, v = 28 m/s, t = 4 s. a = (v − u)/t = (28 − 4)/4 = 24/4 = 6 m/s².
In (b), dividing the final velocity by the time (28/4 = 7 m/s²). Acceleration is the change in velocity per second: (28 − 4)/4.
Problem 7 · The bus – complete Table 2.6 (page 34)
N7. Use the information about the bus (Fig 2.7: 0 m/s at A at 0 s, 4 m/s at B at 2 s, 8 m/s at C at 4 s, 12 m/s at D at 6 s) to complete the table. Also fill the blanks: A മുതൽ B വരെ ബസ്സ് സഞ്ചരിക്കുമ്പോൾ A യിലെ പ്രവേഗമാണ് …… ; B യിലെ പ്രവേഗമോ? …… (ആദ്യപ്രവേഗം/അന്ത്യപ്രവേഗം) From A to B, the velocity at A is the …… ; the velocity at B? …… ; from B to C, the velocity at B is the …… (initial velocity / final velocity)
The velocity at the start of a stage is its initial velocity u; at the end it is the final velocity v. The same point (B) can be the end of one stage and the start of the next.
| Stage | u (m/s) | v (m/s) | v − u (m/s) | t (s) | a = (v − u)/t (m/s²) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A to B | |||||
| B to C | |||||
| C to D |
A → B: u = 0, v = 4, v − u = 4 m/s, t = 2 s, a = 4/2 = 2 m/s²
B → C: u = 4, v = 8, v − u = 4 m/s, t = 2 s, a = 2 m/s²
C → D: u = 8, v = 12, v − u = 4 m/s, t = 2 s, a = 2 m/s²
Unit: (m/s) ÷ s = m/s². The acceleration is the same in every stage → uniform acceleration.
Problem 8 · The motorbike – complete Table 2.7 (page 36)
N8. Analyse Fig 2.9 (motorbike: P 20 m/s at 0 s, Q 15 m/s at 10 s, R 10 m/s at 15 s, S 5 m/s at 20 s, T 0 m/s at 40 s) and complete the table.
Same method as the bus. The time for each stage is the difference of the clock readings (Q → R: 15 − 10 = 5 s). Now v is smaller than u, so v − u is negative.
| Stage | u (m/s) | v (m/s) | v − u (m/s) | t (s) | a = (v − u)/t (m/s²) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| P to Q | |||||
| Q to R | |||||
| R to S | |||||
| S to T |
P → Q: 20, 15, −5, 10 s, a = −5/10 = −0.5 m/s²
Q → R: 15, 10, −5, 5 s, a = −1 m/s²
R → S: 10, 5, −5, 5 s, a = −1 m/s²
S → T: 5, 0, −5, 20 s, a = −0.25 m/s²
All negative: the velocity decreases – retardation മന്ദീകരണം (negative acceleration). The values differ from stage to stage → non-uniform acceleration.
Same change of velocity (−5 m/s) every stage, but in different times – so the acceleration is different. Acceleration depends on how quickly the velocity changes, not only on how much.
Problem 9 · Three retardation questions (page 37)
N9.
മന്ദീകരണമെത്ര?An object starts from rest and gains a velocity of 10 m/s in 5 s. (a) What is its acceleration? (b) If it comes to rest in the next 5 s, what is the acceleration then? What is the retardation?
വാഹനത്തിന്റെ മന്ദീകരണമെത്ര?A vehicle moving at 5 m/s brakes and stops in 2 s. What is its retardation?
എട്ടാം സെക്കന്റിലെ പ്രവേഗമെത്ര?The velocity of an object is 40 m/s at the 2nd second and 30 m/s at the 4th second. What is its acceleration? Its retardation? Its velocity at the 8th second?
Always a = (v − u)/t with the direction of motion as +. If a comes out negative, the retardation is the same number without the minus sign. In (iii) the time is 4 − 2 = 2 s; then use v = u + at from the 4th to the 8th second (assume the same uniform acceleration).
(i)(a) u = 0, v = 10 m/s, t = 5 s: a = (10 − 0)/5 = 2 m/s².
(i)(b) u = 10 m/s, v = 0, t = 5 s: a = (0 − 10)/5 = −2 m/s²; retardation = 2 m/s².
(ii) u = 5 m/s, v = 0, t = 2 s: a = (0 − 5)/2 = −2.5 m/s²; retardation = 2.5 m/s².
(iii) u = 40 m/s, v = 30 m/s, t = 4 − 2 = 2 s: a = (30 − 40)/2 = −5 m/s²; retardation = 5 m/s². At the 8th second: v = 30 + (−5) × (8 − 4) = 30 − 20 = 10 m/s.
Writing “retardation = −2 m/s²”. Retardation already means negative acceleration, so write either a = −2 m/s² or retardation = 2 m/s² – never both minus signs. In (iii), t is 2 s (from the 2nd to the 4th second), not 4 s.
Problem 10 · Plotting Table 2.8 – Graph 2.3 (pages 41–42)
N10. Plot Table 2.8 (time 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 s; position 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 m) with the scale X axis 1 cm = 2 s, Y axis 1 cm = 1 m, and answer:
- ലഭിച്ച ഗ്രാഫിന്റെ സ്വഭാവമെന്ത്? (തിരശ്ചീനമായ നേർരേഖയാണ്/ചരിവുള്ള നേർരേഖയാണ്/വക്രരേഖയാണ്)What is the nature of the graph? (horizontal straight line / sloping straight line / curve)
By what name is this graph known?
From its shape, what is special about the velocity? (uniform / non-uniform)
- 5 s കൊണ്ട് വസ്തുവിനുണ്ടായ സ്ഥാനാന്തരം എത്രയാണ്?What is the displacement in 5 s?
- 1.5 m സഞ്ചരിക്കാനെടുത്ത സമയം എത്രയാണ്?What time is taken to travel 1.5 m?
Each point is (time, position): (2, 1) means 1 cm to the right and 1 cm up. To read a value, go up from the time axis to the line, then across to the position axis (or the other way round).
(a) A sloping straight line through the origin.
(b) A position–time graph
(c) Equal displacements (1 m) in equal times (2 s) → uniform velocity, 1 m ÷ 2 s = 0.5 m/s.
(d) At t = 5 s the position is 2.5 m, so the displacement in 5 s is 2.5 m.
(e) 1.5 m is reached at 3 s.
Problem 11 · Velocity from a position–time graph – Graph 2.4 (pages 42–43)
N11. The position–time graph of a car is given (X 1 cm = 2 s, Y 1 cm = 10 m; A = (4 s, 20 m), B = (10 s, 50 m)).
- ഗ്രാഫിൽ A മുതൽ B വരെയുള്ള ഭാഗത്ത് കാറിന്റെ സ്ഥാനാന്തരം എത്ര?What is the displacement of the car from A to B?
- A മുതൽ B വരെ കാർ സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്നതിന് എടുത്ത സമയമെത്ര?How much time did the car take from A to B?
- പ്രവേഗം = (s₂ − s₁)/(t₂ − t₁)Find the velocity from A to B.
What is the car's position at the 6th second?
What type of velocity does the car have? (uniform / non-uniform)
Find the velocity of the car between 6 s and 8 s from the graph.
Read s₁, t₁ at A and s₂, t₂ at B. Velocity = rise ÷ run of the line = (s₂ − s₁)/(t₂ − t₁).
(a) s₂ − s₁ = 50 m − 20 m = 30 m. (b) t₂ − t₁ = 10 s − 4 s = 6 s.
(c) v = (s₂ − s₁)/(t₂ − t₁) = 30 m ÷ 6 s = 5 m/s.
(d) At 6 s the position is 30 m. (e) Straight line → uniform velocity.
(f) Between 6 s and 8 s: (40 m − 30 m) ÷ (8 s − 6 s) = 5 m/s – the same, as expected for uniform velocity.
Choose a scale that fits the data on the graph paper. A different scale changes how steep the line looks, but not the value of the physical quantity (here 5 m/s).
Problem 12 · Area under a velocity–time graph – Graph 2.5 (pages 43–44)
N12. Graph 2.5: t = 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 s; v = 0, 20, 40, 40, 40, 40 m/s (X 1 cm = 2 s, Y 1 cm = 10 m/s).
Find the displacement between the 4th and the 10th second.
Find the displacement in the first 4 s from the graph.
ത്വരണം എത്ര?What is the change in velocity in the first 4 s? The acceleration?
- 4 s നും 10 s നും ഇടയിൽ ഈ വാഹനത്തിന്റെ ത്വരണം എത്ര?What is the acceleration of the vehicle between 4 s and 10 s?
Displacement = velocity × time = area under the graph. From 4 s to 10 s that area is a rectangle; in the first 4 s it is a triangle (½ × base × height). Acceleration = change in velocity ÷ time = slope.
(a) From 4 s to 10 s: area of rectangle ABCD = AB × AD = 40 m/s × 6 s = 240 m.
(b) First 4 s: area of the triangle = ½ × 4 s × 40 m/s = 80 m.
(c) Change in velocity = 40 − 0 = 40 m/s; acceleration = 40 m/s ÷ 4 s = 10 m/s².
(d) Between 4 s and 10 s the velocity stays 40 m/s → acceleration = 0 (uniform velocity).
Reading the height (40) as the displacement. On a v–t graph the height is the velocity; the displacement is the area.
Problem 13 · Equations of motion – two worked examples (page 45)
N13.
ഈ സമയ ഇടവേളയിൽ വസ്തുവിനുണ്ടായ സ്ഥാനാന്തരമെത്ര?An object starting from rest has a velocity of 20 m/s at 2 s and 40 m/s at 6 s. What is its displacement in this time interval?
- ഒരു കാറിന്റെ പ്രവേഗം 10 s കൊണ്ട് 6 m/s ൽ നിന്നും 16 m/s ലേക്ക് എത്തുന്നുവെങ്കിൽ, a) കാറിന്റെ ത്വരണം കണക്കാക്കുക. b) ഈ സമയം കൊണ്ട് കാറിനുണ്ടായ സ്ഥാനാന്തരം എത്ര?The velocity of a car changes from 6 m/s to 16 m/s in 10 s. (i) Calculate its acceleration. (ii) What is its displacement in this time?
In (a), the interval starts at 2 s, so u = 20 m/s, v = 40 m/s and t = 6 − 2 = 4 s. Find a first, then s = ut + ½at². Check with the area of the trapezium under the v–t line.
(a) u = 20 m/s, v = 40 m/s, t = 6 s − 2 s = 4 s. a = (v − u)/t = (40 − 20)/4 = 5 m/s².
s = ut + ½at² = (20 × 4) + (½ × 5 × 4²) = 80 m + 40 m = 120 m.
(b)(i) u = 6 m/s, v = 16 m/s, t = 10 s. a = (16 − 6)/10 = 1 m/s².
(b)(ii) s = ut + ½at² = (6 × 10) + (½ × 1 × 10²) = 60 m + 50 m = 110 m.
In (a), taking t = 6 s and u = 0 (“it started from rest”). The question asks only about the interval from 2 s to 6 s, so u is the velocity at 2 s and t = 4 s.
Problem 14 · Train leaving a station, and a falling object (page 46)
N14.
A train leaving a railway station reaches a velocity of 90 km/h in 10 minutes. Calculate its acceleration.
- നിശ്ചലാവസ്ഥയിൽ നിന്ന് 10 m/s² സമത്വരണത്തോടെ പതിക്കുന്ന വസ്തു തറയിൽ തൊടുന്നതിന് തൊട്ടു മുമ്പ് അതിന്റെ പ്രവേഗം 20 m/s ആണെങ്കിൽ വസ്തു എത്ര ഉയരത്തിൽ നിന്നാണ് പുറപ്പെടുന്നത്?An object falls from rest with a uniform acceleration of 10 m/s². Just before touching the ground its velocity is 20 m/s. From what height did it start?
(a) Convert first: km/h × 5/18 = m/s, minutes × 60 = s. (b) No time is given – use the equation without t: v² = u² + 2as. Take downward as positive.
Four times the height gives only twice the landing speed – because v² (not v) grows in step with s. A coconut from a 20 m tall tree lands at 20 m/s = 72 km/h!
(a) Direction of motion = +. u = 0; v = 90 km/h = 90 × 5/18 = 25 m/s; t = 10 min = 10 × 60 = 600 s.
a = (v − u)/t = (25 − 0)/600 = 1/24 m/s² (≈ 0.042 m/s²).
(b) Downward = +. u = 0, a = 10 m/s², v = 20 m/s, s = ?
v² = u² + 2as ⇒ 20² = 0² + 2 × 10 × s ⇒ 400 = 20s ⇒ s = 400/20 = 20 m.
In (a), dividing 90 by 10 and writing 9 m/s². Units must match: m/s and s, not km/h and minutes. Convert before you substitute.
