Newton's Third Law – Action and Reaction

Why is it hard to run on beach sand? Why does a balloon zoom along a string when you let its air out, and how does a rocket climb with nothing to push against? One law answers all of these: forces always come in pairs. Five virtual labs on this page.

📖 What you need (pages 5, 6 and 7 of this guide)

1. Walking on sand, mud and firm ground

Have you ever run on the sand at the beach? Have you found it hard to walk through a muddy place? And what about walking on firm ground? Why could you walk fast on firm ground but found it hard to walk in mud? When we walk, in which direction do we apply force on the ground? And in which direction do we move?
🚶 Virtual lab 1 – push the ground backwards, move forwards
force of the foot on the ground (action)force of the ground on the foot (reaction)
When we walk, our foot pushes the ground backwards; the ground pushes our foot forwards with an equal force, and that forward push moves us forward. Firm ground does not give way, so we can push hard and get a big forward push back. Sand and mud slide backwards under the foot, so we cannot push hard – the forward push we get back is small, and we waste effort moving the sand. That is why walking in sand or mud is tiring and slow.

2. Activity – the balloon rocket (Fig 3.12)

A drinking straw is threaded on a smooth plastic string, and the string is tied slanting, as in the figure. Fix an inflated balloon to the straw with cellotape and then let the air out of the balloon. What do you observe?
⚠ Do not over-inflate the balloon or hold it close to your face or eyes – it can burst. Pinch the mouth while taping it; let go only when everybody is clear of the string.
🎈 Virtual lab 2 – balloon on a slanting string
balloon pushes the air out (action, on the air)air pushes the balloon (reaction, on the balloon)
The air rushes out of the balloon's mouth towards the table (down the string). The balloon moves the opposite way – up the string, towards the window. The stretched rubber squeezes the air out (action on the air); the air pushes back on the balloon with an equal force in the opposite direction (reaction on the balloon).

3. Activity – two spring balances (Fig 3.13)

A and B are two identical spring balances. Fix one end of spring balance B firmly to a window bar. If a force of 40 N is applied on B using spring balance A, what reading does each spring balance show? Aren't they equal?
⚠ Pull slowly and do not go beyond the last mark on the scale. Never let go of a stretched spring balance – it snaps back and can hit your hand or face.
⚖️ Virtual lab 3 – pull A, read both balances

Positive direction: to the right (towards the hand). Each arrow is drawn on the balance that the force acts on, and to scale.

⭐ Newton's third law of motion – ന്യൂട്ടന്റെ മൂന്നാം ചലനനിയമം (textbook page 68)

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. This is Newton's third law of motion.

4. Pushing a car from inside

🤔 Think. If we sit inside a car and push it, the car does not move. But sitting in the back seat, we can push the front seat and move it. How is that?

For each push, ask: are you part of the object you are pushing, or completely outside it? Where does the reaction of your push go?

🎬 Inside the car, the front seat, and from the road
The front seats can slide. From the back seat we are completely outside the front seat, so we can apply an unbalanced external force on it – and it moves. But when we sit inside the car and push it, the same amount of force that our hands give the car is passed through our body to the car's floor (platform) in the opposite direction. The two forces on the car are balanced, so the car does not move. When we stand on the road and push, the car gets an unbalanced external force, so it moves.

5. Which comes first – action or reaction?

🤔 Think. Can you find out which of action and reaction comes first?
Neither. They appear at the same instant and disappear at the same instant. In Virtual lab 3, move the slider: the pointers of A and B move together – there is never a moment when one balance reads 40 N and the other still reads 0. Which force we call the “action” is only a choice of name.
⭐ Action and reaction – ബലവും പ്രതിബലവും (textbook page 69)

Action and reaction act at the same time on different objects. When two objects exert forces on each other, the force on one can be taken as the action and the opposite force produced on the second object as the reaction. They act only in pairs: if there is an action, there is a reaction.

6. Rowing, rockets and jumping from a boat

When we row a boat we push the water backwards, but the boat moves forwards.
During a rocket launch, the high-pressure gases formed by burning fuel in the combustion chamber rush out at high speed in one direction, but the rocket shoots off in the opposite direction (Fig 3.14).
When a person jumps from a boat near the shore onto the land, the boat moves backwards.
🎬 Virtual lab 4 – find the pair in each case
actionreactionmotion that results
1. Rowing. The oar pushes the water backwards (action, on the water). The water pushes the oar – and so the boat – forwards with an equal force (reaction, on the boat). So the boat moves forward.
2. Rocket. The rocket pushes the hot, high-pressure gases downwards out of the nozzle at high speed (action, on the gases). The gases push the rocket upwards with an equal and opposite force (reaction, on the rocket) – the thrust. No air or ground is needed to “push against”; the rocket pushes its own exhaust.
3. Jumping from a boat. To jump towards the shore, your feet push the boat backwards (action, on the boat). The boat pushes you forwards towards the shore (reaction, on you). The boat, floating on water, is free to move, so it moves backwards. (That is why you can fall into the water if you jump from a light boat!)
🌴 In Kerala

In a vallam kali (snake-boat race) such as the Nehru Trophy at Punnamada lake, a hundred rowers push the water backwards in perfect rhythm – and the water pushes the long chundan vallam forwards. Rockets for ISRO's PSLV and LVM3 are designed at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Thiruvananthapuram and launched from Sriharikota: the hot gases rushing down out of the nozzles push an LVM3 of over 600 tonnes upwards.

⚠ Never try to make or launch a home-made rocket with fuel or fire-crackers – it can explode. The balloon rocket shows the same physics safely.

7. Writing the third law with symbols (Fig 3.15)

F12 = −F21. In the spring-balance experiment, equal forces were felt in both directions. Forces occur only in pairs. F12 is the force exerted by object 1 on object 2. And F21? It is the force exerted by object 2 on object 1. Then, by Newton's third law, F12 = −F21.
🖼️ Fig 3.15 redrawn – object 1 = balance A, object 2 = balance B

Positive direction: to the right. F12 = +40 N acts on B; F21 = −40 N acts on A. The minus sign only says “opposite direction”. (In the textbook picture each arrow is printed under a balance; here each arrow is drawn on the object it acts on.)

F12 = −F21   ⇒   (+40 N) = −(−40 N)

8. The skater with a rocket pack (Fig 3.16)

The textbook shows a skater on a skateboard with a small rocket pack on his back, in three pictures: നിശ്ചലം (at rest), മൂന്നാം ചലനനിയമ പ്രകാരമുള്ള ചലനം (motion by the third law) and ജഡത്വം കാരണം ചലനം തുടരുന്നു (the motion continues because of inertia). Step through it – two laws work one after the other.

9. Answer and justify

Action and reaction are equal and opposite. Then do they cancel each other?
If you stand on ice and try to push a vehicle away, will the vehicle move?

(a) Forces cancel only when they act on the same object. (b) What stops you from moving backwards on ordinary ground? Is that there on ice?

🧊 Virtual lab 5 – push a van while standing on ice

Positive direction: to the right (towards the van). The van has a mass of 1500 kg.

(a) No. Action and reaction act on different objects, so they cannot cancel each other. Forces cancel only when they act on the same object. In the spring-balance activity, +40 N acts on B and −40 N acts on A – each balance feels only one of them. (Each object may still be in balance because of other forces – A is also pulled by the hand, B is also held by the window bar.)
(b) Practically no – you slide back instead. When you push the vehicle, it pushes you back with an equal and opposite force. On ordinary ground, friction on your feet stops you sliding back; on ice there is almost no friction, so the reaction pushes you backwards. The vehicle has a huge mass and its tyres grip the road (its brakes are on), so it hardly moves. Even if it were on ice too, the same force would give its large mass only a tiny acceleration (a = F/m), while your much smaller mass gets a large one.

Internal forces are balanced – why?

Using the third law, show why internal forces are balanced forces. (Hint: when an internal force is applied, the action and the reaction are felt by the same object.)
🖼️ An autorickshaw pushed from inside – take the auto + driver as one object
Take the autorickshaw with the person inside as one object. The person's hands push the front panel forwards (+F). By the third law, the panel pushes the hands backwards (−F). Both forces act on parts of the same object, so their sum is F + (−F) = 0. The same happens with the feet and the floor. The resultant of all internal forces is zero – they are balanced – so they cannot change the object's state of rest or motion. Only an external force (from the road, or from someone outside) can.
