Electric Current, the Ammeter and Circuit Diagrams
How much charge flows past a point every second? That is the electric current, measured in amperes with an ammeter. On this page you count coulombs, watch electrons drift through a wire, learn the circuit symbols of Table 7.5, place meters correctly (and see what happens when you don't!) and build a torch from a PVC pipe.
- Charge Q in coulombs (C); time t in seconds (s); prefixes milli (m) = 1/1000 and micro (µ) = 1/10,00,000 (page 3).
- Conductors have many free electrons; insulators have very few (page 1).
- A cell keeps a potential difference; a voltmeter measures it with + to + and − to − (pages 5–6).
1. Intensity of electric current (page 140)
The thinking student asks: – How can we find the intensity of the current in a circuit? – Electric current is the flow of electric charges.
The amount of charge flowing through a conductor in unit time (one second) is the intensity of electric current, or simply the current (കറന്റ്). Its symbol is I.
– If charge Q flows through a circuit in time t, how much flows in one second? Charge per second = Q/t, so
I = Qt unit of current = unit of chargeunit of time = Cs = ampere (A) ആമ്പിയർ
Each marker stands for 0.5 C passing the dashed cross-section. Set I = 2 A and t = 5 s to check the textbook question below (10 C).
– The unit is called the ampere in honour of André-Marie Ampère. Smaller units: milliampere (mA) and microampere (µA)
1 A = 1000 mA 1 mA = 1000 µA

2. Textbook numericals (page 140)
Question 1. – 10 C of charge takes 5 s to flow through a conductor. What is the current?
Current = charge ÷ time.
Question 2. – A current of 1.5 A flows through a conductor for 3 s. Find the charge that flowed.
Rearrange I = Q/t to Q = I × t.
3. Current through a conductor (Fig 7.17)
– A conductor contains a great many free electrons (സ്വതന്ത്ര ഇലക്ട്രോണുകൾ). When it is connected to a source of emf, the electrons entering at end A cause, at the same moment, an equal number of electrons to leave at end B and return to the source's positive terminal. – That is why devices start working as soon as they are switched on.
In a conductor the electrons flow from the negative (−) to the positive (+) terminal of the source, but the direction of current is taken from + to − (the "conventional current"). Insulators (ഇൻസുലേറ്ററുകൾ) have very few free electrons.
The direction of current was agreed on long before the electron was discovered (1897). Scientists then guessed that positive charge flows out of the + terminal. The rule was kept, so in every circuit diagram the current arrow goes from + round the outside to −, while the electrons actually drift the other way.
4. Measuring current – the ammeter (Fig 7.18)
– In everyday circuits we can't count the charge and time to calculate the current. We measure it directly with an ammeter (അമ്മീറ്റർ), connected into the circuit as in Fig 7.18 – so that the whole current passes through it.
Model: two fresh 1.5 V cells (3 V), the bulb taken as a fixed 10 Ω resistance, ideal meters (an ammeter has almost no resistance, a voltmeter an extremely large one).
– An ammeter in a circuit reads 1 A. How much charge flows through it in 1 s?
A clamp ammeter measures the current in a circuit without being connected to the wire or the appliance. It is used to measure the large currents in household and similar circuits. Its jaws close around one wire and it works using the magnetic field produced by the current.
Watch a KSEB lineman checking a supply line or an electrician checking a house's main board: they often snap a clamp meter around one wire. They never have to cut the wire to put an ammeter "in series" – the clamp senses the current's magnetic field from outside. (Leave this work to trained people – mains wiring can kill.)
5. Circuit diagrams and symbols (Fig 7.19, Table 7.5)
– A circuit (സെർക്കീട്ട്) joins a source and a device so that current can flow. A circuit diagram draws it with standard symbols. Compare the picture (Fig 7.19 a) with its diagram (Fig 7.19 b).
| Component ഘടകം | Symbol പ്രതീകം | What it does |

– Draw a circuit using Table 7.5. Write the names and uses of any three components in it.
• Battery – the source of emf; keeps the potential difference that drives the current.
• Switch / key – opens or closes the circuit, to stop or start the current.
• Bulb – turns electrical energy into light (and heat).
(Also: ammeter – measures current, in series; voltmeter – measures p.d., in parallel; LED – gives light, works only one way round.) Why: in an exam, draw straight lines with a ruler, use the exact symbols, and make sure the loop is closed.
- The brain and the heart produce electric signals. Instructions from the brain travel along the nerves as electric signals.
- A part of the heart called the sinus node (SA node) produces electric signals that set the rhythm of the heartbeat. (An ECG records these signals.)
- The electric eel (ഇലക്ട്രിക് ഈൽ), a fish, can produce electric signals of about 600 V and uses them to catch its prey.
6. Make a torch (Fig 7.20)
– Make a small torch using two torch cells, a suitable LED, wires, a switch and a PVC pipe.
- Put the two cells in the pipe in series (the + of one touching the − of the next): 1.5 + 1.5 = 3 V.
- Fix a wire to each end of the pair; take the + wire through the switch to the LED's long leg (+).
- A white LED needs about 3 V. With two fresh cells, put a small resistor in series with the LED (e.g. 10–22 Ω, approx.) so the current is not too large – you will see why on page 10.
- Join the LED's short leg (−) back to the − end of the cells, fix the LED in a bottle cap at the pipe's mouth, and switch on.
7. Voltmeter and ammeter compared (Fig 7.21, Table 7.6)
– Observe the circuit of Fig 7.21 and tabulate the symbol, use and method of connection of the ammeter and the voltmeter.
