Series and Parallel, Home Circuits, AC and DC
Two identical bulbs, one battery – joined one way they glow dimly and both go out when one switch opens; joined the other way each glows fully and works on its own. On this page you find the effective resistance of series and parallel combinations, see why our homes are wired in parallel, and finally answer the science-fair question: why the resistor next to the LED?
- Ohm's law: V = IR, so I = V/R and R = V/I.
- Adding fractions: 1/6 + 1/3 = 1/6 + 2/6 = 3/6 = 1/2 (page 3).
- A bulb can be taken as a fixed resistance (its value is fixed by its rating); the bigger the current through a bulb, the brighter it glows.
1. Two bulbs, two ways (Fig 7.28)
– Using a 3 V battery, switches and two 3 W, 3 V bulbs, build the two circuits of Fig 7.28. Work the switches and watch the bulbs.
Model: each 3 W, 3 V bulb taken as a fixed 3 Ω (R = V² ÷ P = 9 ÷ 3); ideal 3 V battery. Brightness is shown in proportion to the power in each bulb.
Textbook questions (page 150)
– Turn on S₁ and S₂ in both circuits. In which circuit do the bulbs glow more brightly?
– Turn on only S₁ in both circuits. What do you observe?
– With all switches on, why do the bulbs of Fig 7.28 (b) glow more brightly?
2. In (a) neither bulb glows – the single path is broken at S₂. In (b) only the bulb with S₁ glows (at full brightness). Why: in (b) each bulb has its own path to the battery.
3. In (b) each bulb gets the full 3 V and so a larger current (1 A each in the model); in (a) the two bulbs share the 3 V (1.5 V each, 0.5 A). – the difference in p.d. and current is what makes a bulb brighter or dimmer.
Arrangement (a) is the series connection (ശ്രേണീരീതി); arrangement (b) is the parallel connection (സമാന്തരരീതി). Does joining in series or in parallel change the resistance of a circuit? Let us find out with resistors instead of bulbs.

2. Effective resistance
The thinking student asks: – How do we find the effective resistance of a circuit?
The effective resistance of a combination of resistors is the resistance of the single resistor that would have the same effect in the circuit (the same current from the same battery).
3. Resistors in series (Fig 7.29)
– In series, the p.d. of the circuit is divided among the resistors, and the same current I flows through each.
In series the effective resistance increases: it is the sum of the resistances. V = V₁ + V₂, R = R₁ + R₂. For n equal resistors of R Ω each: effective resistance = nR.
Textbook questions (page 151)
(കൂടുതൽ / കുറവ്) – In series, is the p.d. across the resistor of higher resistance more or less?
(തുല്യം / വ്യത്യസ്തം) – If equal resistors are in series, how do the p.d.s across them compare? (equal / different)
2. Equal (തുല്യം). Why: same I and same R give the same V = IR.
– Resistors of 8 Ω and 4 Ω and a 6 V battery: (a) draw the series circuit; (b) find the effective resistance; (c) find the current.
Series: add the resistances. Then I = V/R.
– Ten resistors of 2 Ω each are joined in series. What is the effective resistance?
– How many 6 Ω resistors must be joined in series to get 42 Ω?
For n equal resistors in series, effective resistance = nR. In Q3 the unknown is n.
4. Resistors in parallel (Fig 7.30, 7.31)
– In parallel, the current divides among the branches, so the total current is the sum of the branch currents: I = I₁ + I₂. Each resistor gets the same p.d. V.
In parallel the effective resistance decreases – it is less than the smallest resistance. I = I₁ + I₂; 1R = 1R₁ + 1R₂, so for two resistors R = R₁R₂R₁ + R₂. For n equal resistors of R Ω each: effective resistance = R/n.
– Resistors of 6 Ω and 3 Ω and a 6 V battery: (a) draw the parallel circuit; (b) find the effective resistance; (c) find the current through each resistor.
R = R₁R₂/(R₁ + R₂). Each resistor has the full 6 V across it, so I = 6/R for each.
Question 5. – If equal resistors are connected in parallel, how do the currents through them compare?
– Five resistors of 10 Ω each are connected in parallel. Find the effective resistance.
Question 7. – Find the effective resistance of the arrangement in Fig 7.32 (a 2 Ω resistor in series with two 2 Ω resistors in parallel).
Q6: n equal resistors in parallel give R/n. Q7: first replace the parallel pair by one resistor, then add the series 2 Ω.

6. How our homes are wired (page 153)
– Resistors reduce the current in a circuit, and resistors of different values are combined to get the p.d. or current needed. Every electrical appliance – bulb, heater, iron box – has resistance.
Textbook questions (page 153)
– How are appliances like bulbs and fans connected in household circuits?
– What are the advantages of connecting appliances in parallel?
2. (i) Every appliance gets the full supply voltage (230 V) it is designed for. (ii) Each can be switched on and off independently with its own switch. (iii) If one appliance fails or fuses, the others keep working. (iv) Appliances of different power draw their own different currents. Why: each branch is a separate path from the supply – compare Fig 7.28 (b).
7. Protecting the bulb (Fig 7.33) – the science-fair answer
– A bulb made to work at 3 V (resistance 6 Ω) is connected to a 9 V battery (a) with a 12 Ω resistor in series, and (b) without it.
Textbook questions (page 153)
– Which circuit has more resistance?
– In which circuit does the bulb get a p.d. of 3 V?
– What happens to the bulb of Fig 7.33 (b) when it is switched on?
2. Circuit (a): I = 9 ÷ 18 = 0.5 A, so V(bulb) = 0.5 × 6 = 3 V – exactly what it needs.
3. The bulb fuses (burns out). Why: it gets the whole 9 V, so I = 9 ÷ 6 = 1.5 A – three times the 0.5 A it is made for.
The component joined with the LED at the science fair was a resistor, connected in series to limit the current: it takes its share of the battery's p.d., so the LED gets only the small p.d. and current it can safely handle – just like the 12 Ω resistor protecting the 3 V bulb on a 9 V battery.
8. DC and AC – and staying safe (page 153)
– Is there any difference between the electricity from a battery and the electricity in our homes?
Electricity from a battery flows in one direction only – direct current (DC). The electricity in our homes changes direction at regular intervals – alternating current (AC) – and it is at a high voltage (230 V). (In India it changes direction 100 times a second – 50 cycles per second, 50 Hz.) So never do the experiments and circuits of this chapter with household electricity.
- Never touch switches, plugs or appliances with wet hands or while standing on a wet floor.
- Never poke anything into a socket; pull a plug out by its body, not the wire; replace cracked plugs and damaged wires.
- Do not overload one socket with many appliances through multi-plugs.
- Switch off at the main switch / MCB before any repair – and leave repairs to a licensed electrician. An ELCB / RCCB in the meter board cuts the supply if current leaks to earth (go further).
- If someone gets a shock, do not touch them – switch off the supply first or push them away with a dry wooden stick.
During the monsoon, trees and branches often bring down KSEB lines. A fallen or sagging line, a wet electric post or a waterlogged street near a broken line can be deadly. Keep far away, keep others away, and inform KSEB at once. Never try to move a wire, even with a stick.
