Noble Gases and Transition Elements
Why do the gases in a neon signboard or a festival helium balloon refuse to react with anything? And what is special about iron, copper and the other metals in the middle of the table, whose compounds colour a laboratory shelf blue, green, purple and orange? Here you meet the stable noble gases, watch electrons slip into the “wrong” shell in the transition elements, and open a gallery of coloured compounds.
1. Noble gases (Table 2.8)
– The table gives information about some main group elements. Complete Table 2.8 and record it in your science diary.
Questions (page 33).
The elements above are noble gases ഉൽകൃഷ്ട വാതകങ്ങൾ. To which group do they belong?
Except helium, what is special about the number of outermost electrons of these elements?
2. They all have 8 electrons in the outermost shell – the most the outermost shell can hold. Helium has 2, which fills its only shell, K.
– For elements other than hydrogen and helium, an atom with 8 electrons in the outermost shell is stable സ്ഥിരത. All atoms take part in chemical reactions രാസപ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ to gain such stability. (You will study this in detail in the next unit.)
Because they have a stable electron arrangement, the elements of group 18 normally do not take part in chemical reactions.
Pick an atom. Its outermost shell is drawn in green. A full outermost shell (8, or 2 for helium) means a stable atom that normally does not react.
Your turn – predict first. Will each atom normally take part in chemical reactions?
Neon glows red-orange in neon signboards; argon fills filament bulbs so the hot filament does not burn away; helium, light and unreactive, fills festival balloons. All three are used precisely because they do not react.
Question (page 33). The elements ₈P, ₁₀Q, ₁₂R and ₁₈S are given (the symbols are not real). a) Write their electron configurations. b) Which of them are noble gases?
b) Q and S are noble gases – their outermost shells have 8 electrons (Q is neon, S is argon). P (oxygen) and R (magnesium) are not.
2. Transition elements
– The elements of the 10 groups 3 to 12 of the periodic table are the transition elements സംക്രമണ മൂലകങ്ങൾ. Click the highlighted cells to explore them (this does the job of the Kalzium software suggested in the book).
Questions (page 34).
Which transition elements are familiar to you? Find them with the help of the periodic table.
Are they all metals?
From which period are transition elements found?
2. Yes, all transition elements are metals ലോഹങ്ങൾ (mercury is a liquid metal).
3. From period 4, starting with scandium (Sc, Z = 21). Periods 1–3 have no transition elements.
– On the left of the table are the elements of groups 1 and 2, generally of high metallic character ലോഹസ്വഭാവം; on the right, groups 13 to 18, generally of low metallic character. On this basis, how can we describe the position of the transition elements?
The elements of groups 3 to 12 are called transition elements because they show the gradual change – the transition സംക്രമണം – from the highly metallic elements of group 2 to the generally less metallic elements from group 13 onwards.
The elements of group 12 (zinc, cadmium, mercury …) are usually counted as transition elements, but strictly speaking they are not. You will learn why in higher classes.
3. Where does the new electron go? (Table 2.9)
– Let us look at another feature of the transition elements. Table 2.9 gives the electron configurations of some period-4 elements. Copy the missing ones from the periodic table (page 5) and check.
– The table makes it clear that in groups 1 and 2 the new electron enters the last shell (N: K 2, 8, 8, 1 → Ca 2, 8, 8, 2).
Question (page 34). But in groups 3, 4 and 5, isn't the electron added to the shell just inside the outermost shell
Check with the periodic table whether electron filling takes place in the same way in groups 6 to 12. Read each configuration and fill in the shell counts.
In the 10 groups 3 to 12 (the transition elements), the filling of electrons takes place in the shell just inside the outermost shell (the penultimate shell).
Similarity along a period
– You have learnt that elements in a group show similar properties. Transition elements generally show similarity within groups too. But do they show anything special along a period?
Question (page 35). Table 2.9 gives some transition elements of period 4. Is there anything special about the number of electrons in their outermost shell?
Transition elements in the same period generally have the same number of outermost electrons. So they show similarity in chemical properties രാസഗുണങ്ങൾ along the period too – iron, cobalt and nickel, side by side, are all hard, magnetic metals.
4. Coloured compounds (Table 2.10)
– You have seen coloured chemicals in the laboratory. Examine the substances of Table 2.10 with your teacher, find their chemical formula and colour, and record them. Open the gallery first, then fill the table.
Click a tube to see the substance (or use the buttons). The symbol of the transition element in each formula is shown in red.
Odd one out. Which substance is not coloured – and what is missing from it?
– It is clear that the coloured compounds നിറമുള്ള സംയുക്തങ്ങൾ of this table contain transition elements (Ni, Cu, Mn, Co, Cr, Fe). Most compounds of transition elements are coloured. The white calcium carbonate has none. (But be careful: not every compound of a transition element is coloured – zinc compounds, for example, are usually white.)
Pale-pink potassium permanganate solution is used to disinfect wells after floods; the blue copper sulphate mixed with lime makes the Bordeaux mixture sprayed on arecanut and coconut palms against മഹാളി (koleroga).
The elements of groups 3 to 12 are the transition elements.
Electron filling takes place in the shell just inside the outermost shell.

Their compounds are generally coloured.
– You will learn more about transition elements in higher classes.
- Saying noble gases react easily ✗ – their full outermost shell makes them stable.
- Calling every metal a transition element ✗ – sodium, magnesium and aluminium are main group metals.
- Using the +10 rule for transition elements ✗ – scandium has 2 outermost electrons but is in group 3.
- Thinking the new electron always enters the outermost shell ✗ – in groups 3–12 it enters the shell just inside it.
- Calling every coloured substance “transition” without checking the formula ✗ – look for Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu … in it.

5. Check yourself
- Noble gases (group 18): 8 outermost electrons (He 2) → stable → normally no chemical reactions.
- Transition elements: groups 3–12, from period 4, all metals, placed between the highly metallic groups 1–2 and the less metallic groups 13–18.
- In them the new electron enters the shell just inside the outermost shell; the outermost shell usually keeps 2 electrons (1 in Cr, Cu) → similarity along a period.
- Most of their compounds are coloured (CaCO₃, with no transition element, is white).
