Ionic Bond: Sodium Chloride
The common salt in your kitchen, made in the salt pans by the sea, is sodium chloride. How do soft, shiny sodium metal and poisonous green chlorine gas become harmless white salt? One electron jumps from sodium to chlorine, both become stable, and the two charged particles hold on to each other. Here you watch that electron move, draw it with orbit models and dot diagrams, and fill in Table 3.5.
1. What is common salt made of?
– You already know that the chemical name of common salt is sodium chloride. Let us examine the chemical bond in sodium chloride.
Questions (page 46).
Which are the constituent elements of sodium chloride?
Write the electron configuration of the sodium atom (atomic number 11).
How many electrons are there in the outermost shell of the sodium atom?
What is the way for the sodium atom to get an octet configuration?
2. Na (Z = 11): 2, 8, 1.
3. 1 electron (in the third shell, M).
4. It gives away its 1 outermost electron. The M shell becomes empty and the L shell, with 8 electrons, becomes the outermost shell: 2, 8 – an octet, like neon.
2. Sodium gives away one electron (Fig 3.1)
– Look at the picture (Fig 3.1) and the chemical equation of a sodium atom giving away one electron and becoming a sodium ion അയോൺ. Step through it.
Na → Na+ + 1e−
(Ionisation enthalpy). – The outermost electron can be removed from the sodium atom only by overcoming the force of attraction ആകർഷണബലം of the nucleus. The energy needed for this is the ionisation energy അയോണീകരണ ഊർജം, also called ionisation enthalpy അയോണീകരണ എൻഥാൽപി.
The energy needed to set free the most loosely bound electron of the outermost shell of an isolated atom in the gaseous state is the ionisation energy of that element.
It is alone in the third shell, far from the nucleus, and the 10 inner electrons screen it from the 11 protons. So a small amount of energy pulls it away. Metals such as sodium, potassium and magnesium have low ionisation energies – that is why they lose electrons and form positive ions.
3. Chlorine takes one electron (Fig 3.2)
Questions (page 47).
Write the electron configuration of the chlorine atom (atomic number 17).
How many electrons does the chlorine atom need to complete the octet in its outermost shell?
2. 1 electron (7 + 1 = 8). Then it becomes 2, 8, 8 – the octet of argon.
– Look at the picture (Fig 3.2) and the equation of a chlorine atom accepting one electron and becoming a chloride ion ക്ലോറൈഡ് അയോൺ.
Cl + 1e− → Cl−
– When an atom accepts an electron and becomes a negative ion, energy is given out. This energy change is called the electron gain enthalpy
The energy released when an electron is added to a neutral gaseous atom to turn it into a negative ion is called the electron gain enthalpy.
Ionisation energy is energy you must put in (to pull an electron out of an atom). Electron gain enthalpy is energy that comes out (when an electron goes into an atom). Non-metals such as chlorine, fluorine and oxygen readily gain electrons and form negative ions.
4. Sodium meets chlorine (Fig 3.3)
– Analyse Fig 3.3, which shows, with the arrangement of electrons in the shells, the electron transfer that happens in each atom when sodium chloride forms.
– Notice that after the reaction the sodium atom has become the Na⁺ ion and the chlorine atom the Cl⁻ ion. The nuclei did not change: still 11p 12n and 17p 18n.
The book suggests building the structure of NaCl with the Ghemical software. The electron-transfer lab in section 7 does the same job offline; programs such as Ghemical are listed in the explore box at the end of the page.
5. Electron dot diagrams
– The chemist Gilbert N. Lewis first drew the electrons of the outermost shell as dots around the symbol of the element. Crosses (×) are also used instead of dots. Only the outermost-shell electrons are drawn around the symbol – this is an electron dot diagram
Gilbert Newton Lewis, dean at the University of California, was a physical chemist. He put forward the ideas of the electron pair ഇലക്ട്രോൺ ജോഡി and the covalent bond സഹസംയോജകബന്ധനം, and gave us the electron dot structures of atoms and molecules. He also contributed to thermodynamics, photochemistry and the separation of isotopes; relativity and quantum physics were among his research areas. He gave a definition of acids and bases, and he named the smallest particle of radiant energy the photon.
– You know sodium is 2, 8, 1 and chlorine 2, 8, 7. Look at the electron dot diagram of the sodium atom: one dot (its one outermost electron) beside Na.
Question (page 49). Draw the electron dot diagram of the chlorine atom. Then check it with the dot-diagram maker below (press Cl).
Pick an atom. Only the outermost electrons are drawn – one dot each.
– Now look at the electron dot diagram of the formation of sodium chloride (Fig 3.4). Sodium's electron is drawn as a red cross and chlorine's own electrons as blue dots, so you can see exactly which electron moved.
6. Before and after: Table 3.5
– Observe Fig 3.4 and Fig 3.3, complete Table 3.5 and record it in your science diary. Write charges as +1, −1 or 0.
– The electron transfer in the formation of sodium chloride, written as equations:
Na → Na+ + 1e−
Cl + 1e− → Cl−
The number of protons never changes (Na 11 → 11, Cl 17 → 17). Only electrons move. The charge changes because protons − electrons changes: Na 11 − 10 = +1; Cl 17 − 18 = −1.
Cations, anions and the ionic bond
In forming sodium chloride, sodium gives away one electron and becomes the sodium ion (Na⁺); chlorine accepts one electron and becomes the chloride ion (Cl⁻). Positive ions formed by giving away electrons are called cations കാറ്റയോണുകൾ; negative ions formed by accepting electrons are called anions ആനയോണുകൾ.
– In sodium chloride the sodium ion and the chloride ion are held together by the ionic bond. It is the electrostatic attraction between ions of opposite charges that holds the ions together in an ionic compound – just as the north pole of one magnet holds the south pole of another.
(Electrovalent bond).
In ionic compounds, the electrostatic force of attraction that holds the oppositely charged constituent ions together is the ionic bond അയോണിക ബന്ധനം. Another name for the ionic bond is the electrovalent bond ഇലക്ട്രോവാലന്റ് ബന്ധനം.
7. Virtual lab: move the electrons yourself
Choose a metal and a non-metal (or a pair below). Press Move one electron and watch the orbit models, the dot diagram and the table change together. The red electrons are the metal's outer electrons – follow them. Try K + Cl and Na + F: they behave just like Na + Cl. Then try Mg + O (next page).
In the salt pans, sea water evaporates in the sun and sodium ions and chloride ions come together as crystals of common salt. Each crystal is millions of Na⁺ and Cl⁻ ions held by ionic bonds – there are no separate “NaCl molecules”, only ions in the ratio 1 : 1.
- Changing the number of protons when an ion forms ✗ – Na⁺ still has 11 protons; only electrons move.
- Writing Na⁻ or Cl⁺ ✗ – the metal loses electrons (positive), the non-metal gains (negative).
- Drawing all 17 electrons around Cl in a dot diagram ✗ – only the 7 outermost electrons are drawn.
- Calling the ionic bond “sharing” ✗ – it is the transfer of electrons followed by the attraction of opposite ions.
- Mixing up the two energies ✗ – ionisation energy is needed to remove an electron; electron gain enthalpy is released when an electron is added.

- Na (2, 8, 1) gives away 1 electron → Na⁺ (2, 8); the energy needed is the ionisation energy.
- Cl (2, 8, 7) accepts 1 electron → Cl⁻ (2, 8, 8); the energy released is the electron gain enthalpy.
- Protons never change; charge = protons − electrons. Positive ions are cations, negative ions are anions.
- Dot diagrams show only the outermost electrons (Na·, Cl with 7 dots).
