Magnesium Oxide and Ionic Compounds

In the school lab, a strip of magnesium ribbon held in a flame bursts into a dazzling white light and leaves a white powder. That powder, magnesium oxide, is made of ions too – but this time two electrons jump from each magnesium atom to an oxygen atom. Then we look at what all ionic compounds have in common, and melt and dissolve a salt crystal in a virtual lab to see why salt water conducts electricity.

📖 What you need (page 4 of this guide)

1. Burning magnesium ribbon

– You may have seen magnesium ribbon burning in air. Which compound is obtained by this burning (combustion)?

🔥 Teacher demonstration (virtual): magnesium ribbon in a flame
⚠ Safety: burning magnesium is a teacher demonstration. Hold the ribbon with tongs over a fire-proof mat or dish, keep hair and clothes away from the flame, and never look straight at the bright white light – it can hurt your eyes; watch from the side or through dark glass. Do not touch the hot powder.

Question (page 50). Which compound is formed when the ribbon burns?

Magnesium oxide (MgO) – the white powder. Magnesium combines with the oxygen of the air.

– Look at the chemical equation of the reaction that took place here:

2Mg + O2 → 2MgO

Count the atoms: left – Mg 2, O 2; right – Mg 2, O 2. The equation is balanced.

2. The electron dot diagram of magnesium oxide (Fig 3.5)

– The electron dot diagram of the formation of magnesium oxide is given below (Fig 3.5). Examine it and then complete Table 3.6. Magnesium's two outer electrons are red crosses; oxygen's own six electrons are blue dots.

The same change drawn with orbit models – step through it:

🎬 Mg (12p 12n) + O (8p 8n) → [Mg]²⁺ [O]²⁻

Questions (page 51).

Which are the ions in magnesium oxide?
In the formation of magnesium oxide, how many electrons were transferred from magnesium to oxygen?
Predict: electrons transferred from Mg to O
1. The magnesium ion, Mg²⁺ (cation, 2, 8) and the oxide ion, O²⁻ (anion, 2, 8).
2. 2 electrons. Magnesium (2, 8, 2) gives away both its outer electrons; oxygen (2, 6) accepts both and completes its octet.

– From this we understand that when magnesium oxide forms, magnesium and oxygen transfer electrons and an ionic bond forms between them. The charges are bigger (2+ and 2−) than in NaCl, so the attraction is even stronger.

⭐ Key idea (textbook page 51)

Compounds formed through ionic bonds are known as ionic compounds അയോണിക സംയുക്തങ്ങൾ or electrovalent compounds ഇലക്ട്രോവാലന്റ് സംയുക്തങ്ങൾ. Examples: NaCl, MgO, KCl, CaO, MgF₂, Na₂O, CaCl₂.

4. Virtual lab: more ionic compounds

Magnesium gives away 2 electrons. Watch what happens when the partner needs only 1 (fluorine, chlorine): one Mg atom must feed two F atoms → MgF₂. And when sodium (gives 1) meets oxygen (needs 2), two Na atoms are needed → Na₂O. Try the pairs and watch the table: the total charge always comes to zero.

⚡ Electron-transfer lab
🧠 What decides the formula?

The electrons given must equal the electrons taken. Mg gives 2, F takes 1 → 1 Mg : 2 F → MgF₂. Ca gives 2, O takes 2 → 1 : 1 → CaO. K gives 1, Cl takes 1 → KCl. Na gives 1, O takes 2 → 2 Na : 1 O → Na₂O. You will write formulae this way on page 10.

5. Main properties of ionic compounds

The main properties of ionic compounds:

🧂 Virtual lab: a salt crystal – solid, molten, dissolved

Choose the state, then connect the battery. Purple circles are Na⁺ ions, green circles Cl⁻ ions. Watch the bulb.

⚠ In a real conductivity experiment use only low-voltage dry cells – never mains electricity. Salt water conducts, which is also why wet hands near a switch are dangerous.
✅ True or false for ionic compounds?
A dry crystal of salt conducts electricity.
