Covalent Bond: the Molecules F₂, O₂, N₂ and H₂

Sodium can give its electron to chlorine – but what happens when two atoms that both want electrons meet? Two fluorine atoms cannot rob each other, so they do something friendlier: they share. On this page you watch two fluorine atoms try a transfer and fail, then share a pair of electrons; you meet single, double and triple bonds in F₂, O₂ and N₂, draw the hydrogen molecule yourself, and build all of them in the overlap builder.

📖 What you need (pages 2–4 of this guide)

1. Molecules made of two identical atoms

You know that the molecules of hydrogen (H₂), oxygen (O₂), nitrogen (N₂), fluorine (F₂) and chlorine (Cl₂) are each made of two atoms. Such molecules are called diatomic molecules ദ്വയാറ്റോമിക തന്മാത്ര. Have you ever wondered what holds the two atoms together? Both atoms are of the same non-metal, so neither of them is ready to give electrons away – an ionic bond is impossible here.

The five diatomic elements of this chapter – each molecule is two identical atoms whose circles overlap. Why they overlap is the story of this page.

2. The fluorine atom (Fig 3.6)

Let us find out how the fluorine molecule is formed. Fig 3.6 shows the electron arrangement of a fluorine atom.

Fig 3.6 (redrawn) – fluorine, atomic number 9: 9 protons and 10 neutrons in the nucleus; electrons 2, 7.

Q (page 51). How many electrons are there in the outermost shell of a fluorine atom?

7 – the configuration is 2, 7, so the outermost (L) shell has 7 electrons.

Q (page 52). How many more electrons does a fluorine atom need to get the octet configuration?

1 more electron (7 + 1 = 8).

Q (page 52). Is a transfer of an electron from one fluorine atom to another possible? If not, what kind of arrangement must have taken place between the atoms so that both get the octet? Try it in the animation first.

No, a transfer is not possible. Both fluorine atoms need one electron and neither is willing to give one away – if one did, it would be left with 6 outer electrons, even further from an octet. Instead the two atoms share electrons: each atom puts one electron into a common pair, and this shared pair counts for both atoms. Then each atom has 6 + 2 = 8.
🎬 Transfer or share? Two fluorine atoms
☂ Like two friends sharing an umbrella

Two friends walk home from school in the Kerala monsoon with one umbrella between them. Neither friend "owns" the shelter – both stand under it and both stay dry. A shared electron pair is like that umbrella: it sits between the two nuclei, and each atom counts it as its own. The pull of both nuclei on the shared pair is what holds the two atoms together.

3. The fluorine molecule – a single bond (Fig 3.7)

Analyse the electron dot diagram (Fig 3.7) which shows how the two fluorine atoms in the fluorine molecule are bonded.

dots: electrons of the first F atom×crosses: electrons of the second F atomyellow glow: the shared pair

Fig 3.7 (redrawn). In the book all electrons are dots; here the two atoms have different marks so you can see where each shared electron came from.

It is clear that the octet has been completed by sharing പങ്കുവയ്ക്കൽ electrons. Count the electrons inside the left circle: 6 of its own + the 2 in the overlap = 8. The right circle also holds 8.

Q (page 52). How many electrons did each fluorine atom give for sharing?

1 electron each – one dot from the first atom and one cross from the second.

Q (page 52). How many pairs of electrons are shared in the chemical bond of the fluorine molecule?

1 pair (2 electrons) –

So in the fluorine molecule the atoms are bonded by sharing electrons.

⭐ Key idea (textbook page 52)

The chemical bond formed by sharing electrons is called a covalent bond

(Single bond).

A covalent bond formed by sharing one pair of electrons is a single bond

A single bond is shown by a short line (–) between the atoms. With symbols, the single bond in the fluorine molecule is written F – F. Each line stands for one shared pair; the unshared pairs (lone pairs) are usually not drawn in this short form.

4. The oxygen molecule – a double bond (Fig 3.8)

Let us examine the bond in the diatomic oxygen molecule.

Q (page 53). What is the atomic number of oxygen?

8 (8 protons, 8 electrons).

Q (page 53). Write the electron configuration of oxygen.

2, 6 – 6 electrons in the outermost shell.

Q (page 53). How many more electrons must an oxygen atom get to complete its octet?

2 more (6 + 2 = 8). So each oxygen atom must put 2 electrons into the sharing.

3.8). Look at the picture of the bond in the oxygen molecule (Fig 3.8).

Fig 3.8 (redrawn) – each oxygen gives 2 electrons; the overlap holds 2 pairs. Each circle now holds 4 + 4 = 8.

Q (page 53). How many pairs of electrons are shared in the oxygen molecule?

2 pairs (4 shared electrons).
⭐ Key idea (textbook page 53)
(Double bond).

A covalent bond formed by sharing two pairs of electrons is a double bond

The double bond in the oxygen molecule is written O = O – two lines for two shared pairs.

5. The nitrogen molecule – a triple bond (Fig 3.9)

Look at the bond in the nitrogen molecule (Fig 3.9). Nitrogen, atomic number 7, has the configuration 2, 5 – it needs 3 more electrons.

Fig 3.9 (redrawn) – each nitrogen gives 3 electrons; the overlap holds 3 pairs. Each circle: 2 + 6 = 8.

Q (page 53). How many pairs of electrons are shared here to complete the octet?

3 pairs (6 shared electrons). Each nitrogen: 1 lone pair (2) + 3 shared pairs (6) = 8.
⭐ Key idea (textbook page 53)
(Triple bond).

A covalent bond formed by sharing three pairs of electrons is a triple bond

The triple bond in the nitrogen molecule is written N ≡ N.

💡 A pattern worth remembering

Shared pairs needed = electrons the atom is short of an octet. F (7) is 1 short → 1 pair → F–F. O (6) is 2 short → 2 pairs → O=O. N (5) is 3 short → 3 pairs → N≡N. Count the shared electrons carefully: a double bond shares 2 pairs = 4 electrons, a triple bond 3 pairs = 6 electrons. (Triple bonds are very strong – that is why the nitrogen of the air is so unreactive – go further.)

6. The hydrogen molecule – the duplet

Q (page 54). Draw the bond in the hydrogen molecule using an electron dot diagram. Hydrogen, atomic number 1, has just 1 electron. Try it in your notebook first.

H· + ×H → H(·×)H: one shared pair → a single bond, H–H. Each hydrogen now has 2 electrons in its only shell – the duplet രണ്ട് ഇലക്ട്രോൺ സംവിധാനം of helium.

Here a single bond forms between the hydrogen atoms by sharing one pair of electrons, and each atom gains the electron arrangement of helium, the nearest noble gas ഉൽകൃഷ്ട വാതകങ്ങൾ – so it becomes stable സ്ഥിരത. Hydrogen's goal is 2, not 8, because its first shell can hold only 2 electrons.

You have now understood the covalent bond in the element molecules H₂, N₂, O₂ and F₂. On the next page we look at the bonds in some compound molecules.

7. Covalent overlap builder

Pick a molecule, then slide the atoms together. Watch the outer shells overlap, the shared pairs light up, and count the electrons around each atom.

🧪 Overlap builder – element molecules
dots: electrons of the first atom×crosses: electrons of the second atomamber rings: electrons counted for the chosen atom

Only the outermost electrons are drawn. Chlorine (2, 8, 7) behaves just like fluorine: 7 outer electrons, one shared pair, Cl–Cl.
