Law of Conservation of Mass

The chapter begins with a reaction you will remember: a small piece of sodium skating on water that turns pink. Chemical reactions make new substances, and they give out or take in energy. But does the total mass (ആകെ മാസ്) change? When paper burns, only a little ash is left, so it seems that mass is lost. On this page two experiments on an electronic balance (ഇലക്ട്രോണിക് ബാലൻസ്) answer the question. Then atoms and their masses in u explain why the total mass stays the same. This idea is the law of conservation of mass, stated by Antoine Lavoisier.

📖 What you need (pages 1–2 of this guide)

1. Sodium in water – what changes do we see? (pages 69–70)

– Look at the picture of the students doing an experiment. We do many chemical reactions like this in the laboratory.

Question (page 69). What changes do we usually observe when chemical reactions take place?

New substances are formed, and we usually notice one or more of these signs: a gas is given off (bubbles, fizzing), a change of colour, a precipitate (an insoluble solid) forms, heat is given out or taken in, light is given out, or the starting substance gets used up. (See the signs lab on page 1.)

– In the book's experiment a dish is filled about three-quarters with water, two drops of phenolphthalein (ഫിനോൾഫ്‌താലീൻ) are stirred in, and a small piece of sodium is carefully dropped in (Fig 4.1).

⚠ Teacher demonstration only – never at home. Sodium reacts violently with water: it can catch fire and spit hot alkali. Only your teacher should do this, with a very small piece, wearing safety goggles, behind a safety screen or in the fume cupboard, while the class watches from a safe distance. Sodium must never be touched with bare hands. Here you can watch it safely as a virtual demonstration.
🧑‍🏫 Virtual teacher demonstration · sodium in water with phenolphthalein

Phenolphthalein is an indicator: it is colourless in water but turns pink in an alkali. The pink colour tells us that a new substance, an alkali, has formed.

Questions (page 70).

4.2) What changes are observed? (Fig 4.2)
What is the reason? Find out by studying the chemical equation.
2Na + 2H₂O → 2NaOH + H₂↑
1. The sodium darts about on the surface and fizzes; it may catch fire with a yellow flame; it gets smaller and disappears; the water turns pink; the dish becomes warm (heat is given out).
2. Sodium reacts with water to form sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and hydrogen gas (H₂). Sodium hydroxide is an alkali, so the phenolphthalein turns pink. The hydrogen escaping causes the fizzing (the ↑ in the equation means a gas is given off), and it pushes the light sodium about on the surface. The reaction gives out so much heat that the sodium melts into a ball and the hydrogen can catch fire; the flame is yellow because of the sodium. The sodium disappears because it is used up – it has turned into NaOH.

– You have learnt that a chemical change comes with an energy change (ഊർജമാറ്റം): here heat and light are given out. So a reaction changes the substances and the energy. What about the mass?

The big question (page 70). When chemical changes take place, does the total mass of the substances change?

No. The two experiments below show that the total mass stays exactly the same. This is the law of conservation of mass (section 5).

2. Weighing a reaction (pages 70–71)

– When fuels burn and when paper burns, it seems that the total mass of the substances becomes less. Is this right? Let us do an activity.

Experiment 1 · barium chloride and sodium sulphate (Figs 4.3, 4.4)

– Take 20 mL of barium chloride solution in one beaker and 20 mL of sodium sulphate solution in another. Put both beakers together on an electronic balance and note the reading (Fig 4.3). Then pour the solution of one beaker into the other.

⚖️ Virtual electronic balance – does the reading change?

The readings 92.95 g and 94.55 g are the ones in your textbook. The “open flask” is not in the book: it shows what would happen if the gas could escape.

⚠ Barium compounds are poisonous. Do this experiment only under your teacher's supervision, wear goggles, never taste anything, and wash your hands afterwards.

Questions (page 70).

4.4) What can you see? (Fig 4.4)
After a while note the reading of the balance again and compare it with the earlier reading. What did you find?
Is there a change in the total mass as a result of the chemical reaction?
1. A white precipitate (അവക്ഷിപ്തം) forms – the clear solution turns milky white. This solid is barium sulphate, BaSO₄.
2. The reading is still 92.95 g – the same as before mixing.
3. No. The total mass does not change, even though a new substance (the precipitate) has formed.

– Here barium chloride reacts with sodium sulphate to form barium sulphate and sodium chloride. The equation (the ↓ means a precipitate):

BaCl₂ + Na₂SO₄ → BaSO₄↓ + 2NaCl

Experiment 2 · zinc and dilute hydrochloric acid (Figs 4.5, 4.6)

– About 20 mL of dilute hydrochloric acid is taken in a conical flask. A few pieces of zinc are put in a balloon, and the balloon is tied firmly over the mouth of the flask (Fig 4.5). The flask is weighed on the electronic balance. Then the balloon is carefully lifted so that the zinc falls into the acid. Choose “Experiment 2” in the balance lab above.

⚠ Acid can burn skin and eyes: use only dilute acid, wear goggles, and work under your teacher's supervision. Hydrogen burns easily – keep flames away from the balloon.

Questions (page 71).

4.6) What can you see? (Fig 4.6)
Note the reading of the balance and compare it with the earlier one. What do you understand?
Which gas is collected in the balloon?
What can we infer from these experiments?
Does the total mass change as a result of the chemical reaction?
1. Bubbles of gas form on the zinc, the zinc pieces slowly get smaller, and the balloon swells up.
2. The reading is still 94.55 g. The total mass has not changed, even though a gas was produced – because the gas was trapped in the balloon.
3. Hydrogen (H₂).
4. In a chemical reaction the total mass does not change: the total mass of the reactants equals the total mass of the products.
5. No.

– We can write the equation of the reaction:

Zn + 2HCl → ZnCl₂ + H₂↑
📌 Go further: a very sensitive balance

The swollen balloon pushes aside some air, and the air pushes it up a little (buoyancy – the same push that makes a hydrogen balloon float). A very sensitive balance can therefore show a tiny drop when the balloon is big. That is a push from the air, not a loss of matter: the mass of everything inside the flask and balloon is unchanged.

3. Why burning seems to lose mass (page 71)

– The main products of burning fuels and paper, carbon dioxide and water vapour, are gases that mix into the air. That is why the ash left behind is so light.

🔥 Virtual lab · burning paper in an open dish and in a closed jar

Small balls: CO₂ (grey carbon between two red oxygens) and H₂O (red oxygen with two green hydrogens). The oxygen for burning comes from the air. The numbers are made up for this virtual lab; the idea is what matters.

Question (page 71). If these products were collected without any loss and weighed, what would we find? Even in such reactions the total mass of the substances would not change, would it?

We would find that the mass of the ash + carbon dioxide + water vapour is equal to the mass of the fuel (or paper) + the oxygen used from the air. So no, the total mass does not change in burning either; it only seems to decrease because the gaseous products escape into the air. The closed jar in the lab shows this.

4. Lavoisier and the law (page 71)

🧑‍🔬 Antoine Lavoisier

The French chemist found the role of oxygen in combustion (ജ്വലനം). He found that in respiration (ശ്വസനം) oxygen is taken in and carbon dioxide is given out. He recognised that oxygen is present in acids, gave the names oxygen and hydrogen, and classified the known elements into metals and non-metals. Sadly, after the political changes that followed the French Revolution of 1789, this gifted scientist was executed in 1794 – a tragic event for the world of science.

(Law of conservation of mass) പ്രസ്താവിച്ചു. – On the basis of his experiments and observations, the French scientist Antoine Lavoisier stated the law of conservation of mass (മാസ് സംരക്ഷണനിയമം). According to this law:

⭐ Key idea 1 (textbook page 71)

In a chemical reaction, the total mass of the reactants (അഭികാരകങ്ങൾ) is equal to the total mass of the products (ഉൽപന്നങ്ങൾ).

5. Why the total mass does not change (pages 71–72)

Question (page 71). Why does the total mass not change as a result of a chemical reaction?

Because in a reaction no atom is created or destroyed. The atoms of the reactants are only rearranged into new molecules. The number of each kind of atom stays the same, and each atom keeps its own mass, so the total mass stays the same. The lab below lets you watch this happen.

– The unit in which the atomic masses of elements are stated is the unified atomic mass unit (u) Hydrogen has atomic mass 1 u, carbon 12 u, oxygen 16 u.

– You know the reaction in which hydrogen (1 u) and oxygen (16 u) combine to form water:

2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O

The book shows this as a symbolic representation (പ്രതീകാത്മക ചിത്രീകരണം): each atom is a ball labelled with its mass. Two H₂ molecules (1u 1u each) and one O₂ molecule (16u 16u) become two H₂O molecules (16u with two 1u). Watch the atoms move:

⚛ Atom-mass counter – the same atoms, rearranged

Count the balls before and after: the same number of each colour, so the same total mass. Only the partners have changed.

– Analyse Table 4.1. The book prints the answers; cover them and fill it in yourself.

✍ Table 4.1 – 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O

– The total masses of the reactants and the products are equal. When reactants combine in a fixed proportion to form products, their atoms are rearranged in a particular way. There is no change in the total number of atoms or in the total mass.

Activity (page 72). Study the symbolic representation of the reaction in which carbon and oxygen react to form carbon dioxide (choose “C + O₂ → CO₂” in the lab above). Complete Table 4.2 and write your conclusion.

C + O₂ → CO₂
✍ Table 4.2 – C + O₂ → CO₂
Total mass of the reactants = 12 u + 32 u = 44 u; total mass of the product = 12 u + 16 u + 16 u = 44 u. Conclusion: the total mass of the reactants is equal to the total mass of the product – mass is conserved in this reaction too. The one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms are simply rearranged into one CO₂ molecule.

6. Burning methane – does it obey the law? (page 73)

❓ Question (page 73). The symbolic representation of methane (CH₄) burning in air to form water vapour and carbon dioxide is given: one CH₄ and two O₂ molecules give one CO₂ and two H₂O molecules. Write the equation of the reaction. If the atomic masses are H = 1 u, C = 12 u, O = 16 u, check whether this reaction obeys the law of conservation of mass.

Methane is the main gas in biogas and in natural gas, so this is the reaction in a biogas stove. Try it in your notebook first, then step through it:

🎬 Step by step · CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O
✍ Your check – masses in burning methane
Equation: CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O
Reactants: CH₄ = 12 + 4 × 1 = 16 u; 2O₂ = 2 × (2 × 16) = 64 u; total = 16 + 64 = 80 u.
Products: CO₂ = 12 + 2 × 16 = 44 u; 2H₂O = 2 × (2 × 1 + 16) = 36 u; total = 44 + 36 = 80 u.
80 u = 80 u, so yes, the reaction obeys the law of conservation of mass. Atoms on each side: C 1 = 1, H 4 = 4, O 4 = 4.

Notice the numbers 2 in front of O₂ and H₂O. They were needed so that the same atoms appear on both sides. Finding those numbers is called balancing – the next page.
