Balancing Chemical Equations
Atoms are never made or destroyed in a reaction – they only change partners. So a chemical equation must have the same number of each kind of atom on both sides. Here you balance the equation for water step by step, exactly as the book does (the number that changes is shown in red), work through five more examples, and then balance any equation yourself in the equation-balancer lab.
1. Why must an equation be balanced?
A chemical equation രാസസമവാക്യം shows a chemical reaction scientifically, using symbols and formulae. To obey the law of conservation of mass, the total mass of the reactants അഭികാരകങ്ങൾ must equal the total mass of the products ഉൽപന്നങ്ങൾ. We make this happen by making the number of each kind of atom equal on the reactant side and the product side.
In 5H2O the big 5 in front is the coefficient – it tells how many molecules. The small 2 below is the subscript – it tells how many H atoms are inside one molecule. To balance an equation you may change only the coefficients. Changing a subscript changes the substance itself (H2O is water, H2O2 is hydrogen peroxide!).
Questions (page 73).
Oxygen and hydrogen are diatomic molecules. How can they be written using the symbols of the atoms? Oxygen ……, hydrogen ……
How many atoms in all are there in the water molecule (H2O) formed when they combine?
Find the number of molecules and the total number of atoms in 5H2O.
Type a formula with ordinary digits (O2); the preview shows O2.
2. H2O has 2 H + 1 O = 3 atoms.
3. 5H2O = 5 molecules. Atoms: 5 × 3 = 15 atoms (5 × 2 = 10 hydrogen atoms + 5 × 1 = 5 oxygen atoms). The coefficient multiplies every atom in the formula.
2. Balancing the equation for water, step by step
– Let us see how to balance the equation for the reaction in which hydrogen and oxygen combine to form water.
Step 1
Look at Table 4.3.
| Number of atoms in the reactants
| Number of atoms in the product
Question (page 74). Shouldn't the number of oxygen atoms in the product also be 2? What is the way to do it? What if we make the number of water molecules two?
Step 2
Check Table 4.4.
| Number of atoms in the reactants
| Number of atoms in the product
Question (page 74). The number of hydrogen atoms in the reactants must also be four. How can this be done? What if we make the number of hydrogen molecules in the reactants 2?
Step 3
Check Table 4.5.
| Number of atoms in the reactants
| Number of atoms in the product
– Now the number of each kind of atom is the same in the reactant molecules and in the product molecules. The balanced chemical equation for hydrogen and oxygen combining to form water is:
2H2 + O2 → 2H2O
Watch the same three steps with the molecules drawn as balls. The tally cards at the bottom turn green when a kind of atom is balanced.
The process of making the number of each kind of atom in the reactants equal to that in the products is called balancing രാസസമവാക്യ സമീകരണം. The equation obtained is called a balanced chemical equation സമീകൃത രാസസമവാക്യം.
- Write the correct formulae of all reactants and products (O2, H2, N2, Cl2 are diatomic). Never change them afterwards.
- Count each kind of atom on both sides – make a small table.
- Pick an atom that is not equal and put a coefficient in front of a formula that contains it.
- Count again; repeat until every kind of atom is equal.
- Check that the coefficients are the smallest whole numbers (4H2 + 2O2 → 4H2O is balanced but should be divided by 2).
3. Five more worked examples
– Let us practise balancing some more reactions. The book's steps are listed first; the stepper below each one shows the molecules and the tally.
1. Magnesium + oxygen → magnesium oxide
2. Hydrogen + chlorine → hydrogen chloride
3. Zinc + hydrochloric acid → zinc chloride + hydrogen
4. Aluminium + oxygen → aluminium oxide
Oxygen comes in pairs on the left (O2) but in threes on the right (O3 inside Al2O3). The smallest number that both 2 and 3 go into is 6: 3 × O2 = 6 O and 2 × Al2O3 = 6 O. Then aluminium: 2 × Al2 = 4 Al, so 4Al on the left.
5. Nitrogen + hydrogen → ammonia
4. Your turn: the ? box (page 75)
Balance the chemical equations given below and record them in your science diary. Try each one in the balancer first (the button loads it), then open the answer.
b) H: 2 on the left but 1 + 2 = 3 on the right – an odd number, so double the water: 2H2O (4 H, 2 O). To match O, make it 2NaOH (now H on the right = 2 + 2 = 4 ✔). Na is now 2 on the right → 2Na. 2Na + 2H2O → 2NaOH + H2 (Na 2 = 2, O 2 = 2, H 4 = 4).
c) Cl: 1 on the left, 2 on the right → 2HCl. H is then 2 = 2. Mg + 2HCl → MgCl2 + H2
– When writing chemical equations it is usual to show the physical state ഭൗതികാവസ്ഥ of the reactants and products, the energy change ഊർജമാറ്റം and the presence of a catalyst ഉൽപ്രേരകം. Example:
N2(g) + 3H2(g) Fe⟶ 2NH3(g) + heat താപം
So the zinc–acid reaction of page 3 can be written Zn(s) + 2HCl(aq) → ZnCl2(aq) + H2(g). The state symbols and the catalyst do not change the balancing – count only the atoms.
5. Virtual lab: the equation balancer
Pick an equation. Press + and − to change the coefficient in front of each formula. The molecules and the atom tally change at once; a row turns green when that kind of atom is balanced. Try to click on a formula to change a subscript – and see why the lab will not let you.
Practice bank: the book's examples, the ? box, “Let us assess” Q5, and a few go-further ones (LPG burning, acetylene, the nitric-acid reaction of page 10).
- Changing a subscript to balance ✗ H2 + O2 → H2O2 – that is a different substance. ✔ Change only coefficients: 2H2 + O2 → 2H2O.
- Writing a number in the middle of a formula ✗ H22O – the coefficient always goes in front.
- Multiplying only the first atom ✗ “2H2O has 4 H and 1 O” – the coefficient multiplies every atom: 4 H and 2 O.
- Writing single atoms for gases ✗ H + O → H2O – hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and chlorine are diatomic: H2, O2, N2, Cl2.
- Not using the smallest numbers ✗ 4H2 + 2O2 → 4H2O – divide by the common factor.

How chemical equations are written, with coefficients and states (s), (l), (g), (aq).
6. Check yourself
- A balanced equation has the same number of each kind of atom on both sides – that is the law of conservation of mass in symbols.
- Change only the coefficients (numbers in front), never the subscripts.
- Count, fix one kind of atom at a time, count again; finish with the smallest whole numbers.
- 2H2 + O2 → 2H2O · 2Mg + O2 → 2MgO · H2 + Cl2 → 2HCl · Zn + 2HCl → ZnCl2 + H2 · 4Al + 3O2 → 2Al2O3 · N2 + 3H2 → 2NH3.
- States (s), (l), (g), (aq), a catalyst over the arrow and “+ heat” give extra information; they do not change the balancing.
