Double Decomposition and Displacement Reactions

Two more families of reactions. In a double decomposition two compounds swap partners – their ions change places, like two dancing couples exchanging partners. In a displacement reaction an element pushes another element out of its compound and takes its place. You will make a white precipitate, follow the ions as they swap, hear (virtually!) the “pop” of hydrogen, weld a rail with thermite, fill in Tables 5.3 and 5.4 and then test yourself in the classifier.

📖 What you need

1. Sodium chloride + silver nitrate (Fig 5.4)

– Take 2–3 mL of sodium chloride (NaCl) solution in a test tube. Add 2–3 mL of silver nitrate (AgNO3) solution. What do you observe?

⚠ Silver nitrate stains skin and clothes black and harms the eyes. Use only a few drops, under your teacher's supervision, with goggles; wash your hands afterwards.

Question (page 99). What did you observe?

The clear solution at once turns milky white; a white precipitate forms and slowly settles at the bottom of the test tube (Fig 5.4).

1. The precipitate is silver chloride, AgCl (white).
2. In NaCl the sodium ion is joined to the chloride ion, Cl−.
3. In the products the chloride ion is joined to the silver ion, Ag+ (AgCl).

⭐ Key idea 3 (textbook page 100)

When two compounds react, the type of reaction in which they exchange ions to form two new compounds is called a double decomposition reaction ദ്വിവിഘടന രാസപ്രവർത്തനം. Pattern: AB + CD → AD + CB.

📚 Three kinds of double decomposition (side box, page 100)
Precipitates are insoluble compounds that can be separated from the solution.
    MgCl2 + H2SO4 → MgSO4↓ + 2HCl
  2. Gas-forming reactions വാതകരൂപീകരണ രാസപ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ – a gas is one of the products.
    CaCO3 + 2HCl → CaCl2 + H2O + CO2↑
  3. Reactions in which at least one product is a compound that does not separate into ions Neutralisation നിർവീരീകരണം – an acid and a metal hydroxide base react to give water and a salt – is an example.
    HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H2O
🔭 Go further
Write the book's example in the exam. In a real laboratory, magnesium sulphate dissolves quite well in water, so a precipitate appears only from very concentrated solutions. Silver chloride (AgCl), barium sulphate (BaSO4) and lead iodide (PbI2) are precipitates you can always see. In the gas-forming reaction the ions first give H2CO3, which at once breaks up into H2O and CO2.

2. Which ions change partners?

– Examine the equation below and identify which ions the compounds exchange.

BaCl2 + H2SO4 → BaSO4↓ + 2HCl

The positive ions that swap partners are…
BaCl2 = Ba2+ + 2Cl−; H2SO4 = 2H+ + SO42−. The barium ion (Ba2+) and the hydrogen ions (H+) exchange their partners: Ba2+ goes with the sulphate ion (BaSO4, a white precipitate) and the H+ go with the chloride ions (2HCl). Seen the other way: the Cl− and SO42− ions change partners. Choose this reaction in the ion-swap viewer above to watch it.

Question (page 100). Can you find more examples of double decomposition reactions?

Pb(NO3)2 + 2KI → PbI2↓ + 2KNO3 (bright yellow precipitate – the lead experiment of page 3, teacher only)
BaCl2 + Na2SO4 → BaSO4↓ + 2NaCl (white precipitate)
KOH + HNO3 → KNO3 + H2O (neutralisation)
Cu(NO3)2 + Na2S → CuS↓ + 2NaNO3 (black precipitate – Table 5.4)
CuSO4 + 2NaOH → Cu(OH)2↓ + Na2SO4 (pale blue precipitate – go further)

3. Zinc and dilute hydrochloric acid – the pop test (Fig 5.5)

(ചിത്രം 5.5) – Take 5 mL of dilute hydrochloric acid in a test tube, drop in a few granules of zinc (Zn) and bring a burning matchstick to the mouth of the test tube. What do you observe? (Fig 5.5)

⚠ Use only dilute acid, with goggles, under your teacher's supervision. Hydrogen catches fire easily: bring the flame only to the mouth of a small test tube, and never near a large flask or bottle of the gas.
🧪 Virtual lab · zinc in dilute HCl and the burning splinter (Fig 5.5)

Questions (pages 100–101).

What did you observe? (answer below)

Which gas burns with a “pop” sound?
Bubbles of a colourless gas rise from the zinc granules (the tube becomes slightly warm). When the burning matchstick is brought to the mouth of the tube, the gas burns with a “pop” sound. This gas is hydrogen (H2) – the pop test is the test for hydrogen.

In the product, which atom has come in place of the hydrogen of the reactant HCl?
Zinc. – The zinc atom removed the hydrogen of hydrochloric acid and took its place; the hydrogen is set free as H2 gas.

Reactions in which one element in a compound is replaced by another element are called displacement reactions ആദേശ രാസപ്രവർത്തനം. Pattern: A + BC → AC + B.

Question (page 101). Find more examples of displacement reactions.

Fe + CuSO4 → FeSO4 + Cu (an iron nail in blue copper sulphate solution gets a brown-red coat of copper; the blue colour fades)
Mg + 2HCl → MgCl2 + H2↑ (magnesium ribbon fizzes in dilute acid)
Zn + CuSO4 → ZnSO4 + Cu
Zn + 2AgNO3 → Zn(NO3)2 + 2Ag (Table 5.4)
Fe2O3 + 2Al → 2Fe + Al2O3 (thermite – box below)
In each one a more reactive element pushes a less reactive one out of its compound (you will meet reactivity again on page 7).

Thermite is a pyrotechnic mixture of a metal powder and the oxide of another metal. The most common one, iron thermite, is a mixture of iron oxide and aluminium powder. When the mixture is heated (ignited), aluminium displaces iron from iron oxide. So much heat is released that the iron formed comes out molten. Small cracks and joints in railway tracks are repaired (welded) by the thermite process.

Fe2O3 + 2Al → 2Fe + Al2O3

⚠ Thermite burns at well over 2000 °C and cannot be put out with water. Only trained railway workers use it, with full protective gear. Never try to make it.

5. Table 5.4 – classify and extend (? box, page 101)

Classify the reactions given below as combination, decomposition, double decomposition and displacement reactions. Extend Table 5.4 by including more examples.

🗂️ Classify – each correct answer is written into Table 5.4

1. Zn + 2AgNO3 → Zn(NO3)2 + 2Ag – displacement (zinc replaces silver).
2. CaCO3 → CaO + CO2 – decomposition (one compound → two substances).
3. 2HI → H2 + I2 – decomposition.
4. Cu(NO3)2 + Na2S → CuS + 2NaNO3 – double decomposition (Cu2+ and Na+ swap partners; CuS is a black precipitate).
5. SO2 + H2O → H2SO3 – combination (one product, sulphurous acid).
More examples: combination – CaO + H2O → Ca(OH)2, N2 + 3H2 → 2NH3; decomposition – (NH4)2Cr2O7 → Cr2O3 + 4H2O + N2, CuCO3 → CuO + CO2; double decomposition – NaCl + AgNO3 → AgCl + NaNO3, BaCl2 + H2SO4 → BaSO4 + 2HCl; displacement – Zn + 2HCl → ZnCl2 + H2, Fe2O3 + 2Al → 2Fe + Al2O3.
🧠 A quick way to decide
  1. Count the reactants. Only one? → decomposition.
  2. Count the products. Only one? → combination.
  3. Is one reactant a lone element (Zn, Fe, Al, Mg…) and one product a lone element? → displacement.
  4. Two compounds → two new compounds by swapping ions? → double decomposition.
