Chapter 5 · Types of reactions (1)Textbook pages 97–99

Combination and Decomposition Reactions

On page 3 you learnt to recognise a chemical change. Now we sort reactions into families by looking at what happens to the substances. In some reactions small substances join into one new compound; in others one compound breaks apart. Watch quicklime get hot in water, a teacher's “volcano” of ammonium dichromate, lead nitrate and copper carbonate breaking down, and the chemistry that opens a car air bag – then sort reactions yourself in the reaction-type machine.

📖 What you need

1. Sorting reactions into types

We can recognise a chemical change from a colour change നിറവ്യത്യാസം, a gas വാതകം given off, a smell ഗന്ധം or a precipitate അവക്ഷിപ്തം. Now let us see how reactions can be classified by looking at the products formed. The textbook meets four types – two on this page, two on page 5:

TypeWhat happensPattern
Combination സംയോജനംthings join into oneA + B → AB
Decomposition വിഘടനംone thing breaks apartAB → A + B
Double decomposition ദ്വിവിഘടനംtwo compounds swap partnersAB + CD → AD + CB
Displacement ആദേശംan element pushes another outA + BC → AC + B

2. Quicklime and water – heat!

– Take a little quicklime നീറ്റുകക്ക (calcium oxide, CaO) in a beaker. Pour a little water on it. Touch the outside of the beaker. What do you observe?

⚠ Quicklime is caustic: it burns skin and eyes, and the mixture can get hot enough to spit. Use only a small amount, under your teacher's supervision, wearing goggles; touch only the outside of the beaker, and wash your hands afterwards.
🧪 Virtual lab · water on quicklime

The thermometer numbers are illustrative – with a lot of quicklime the water can even boil.

Question (page 97). What is the observation?

The beaker becomes hot – heat is given out. The lumps hiss, crack and crumble into a white paste, and some steam may rise. – Calcium oxide reacts with water to give the compound calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2 (slaked lime). It is an exothermic reaction താപമോചക പ്രവർത്തനം – a reaction that gives out heat.

Question (page 98). Write the chemical equation of the reaction. (Type with ordinary keys, e.g. CaO + H2O -> Ca(OH)2; the preview shows subscripts.)

🌴 നീറ്റുകക്ക in Kerala

“Kakka” are the shells of clams from our backwaters. Burning them in a kiln gives നീറ്റുകക്ക (quicklime, CaO). Adding water “slakes” it – with a lot of heat – into slaked lime Ca(OH)2, used for whitewashing walls, in mortar, and as the chunnambu (lime paste) applied with betel leaf. You will see how the shells turn into quicklime in section 4.

3. Combination reactions

CaO + H2O → Ca(OH)2

Two substances went in, one came out. – Examine the equation of another reaction given below.

N2 + 3H2 → 2NH3

Questions (page 98).

Which substances have combined in this reaction?
What is the product formed in the reaction?
Substances combined: nitrogen (N2) and hydrogen (H2). Product: ammonia (NH3) – just one product. (Industry makes ammonia this way for fertilisers – the Haber process, page 8.)

– Now look at one more reaction (sulphur dioxide and oxygen give sulphur trioxide – a step in making sulphuric acid):

2SO2 + O2 → 2SO3

In all three reactions two substances join into one new compound. Notice that the substances that join can be elements (N2, H2, O2) or compounds (CaO, H2O, SO2).

A reaction in which two or more simple substances (elements or compounds) combine to form one new compound is called a combination reaction സംയോജന രാസപ്രവർത്തനം. Pattern: A + B → AB.

Question (page 98). Can you find more examples of combination reactions?

Each has two reactants and one product. (Try them in the machine in section 6.)

4. Decomposition reactions

A teacher's “volcano”: ammonium dichromate (Fig 5.3)

– 3 g of ammonium dichromate, (NH4)2Cr2O7, is taken in a conical flask, the mouth of the flask is closed with cotton, and it is heated.

⚠ Teacher demonstration only – never at home. Ammonium dichromate is toxic and can cause cancer; its orange crystals and the green dust it makes must not be breathed in or touched. The cotton plug keeps the dust inside the flask. Only your teacher does this, in a fume cupboard, with goggles and gloves. Here you watch it safely as a virtual demonstration.
🧑‍🏫 Virtual teacher demonstration · heating ammonium dichromate (Fig 5.3)

Question (page 98). What change did you observe?

The orange crystals start to glow and throw out sparks like a tiny volcano, and swell up into a large heap of fluffy dark-green powder. Droplets of water (steam condensing) appear on the cooler glass, and a colourless gas escapes. – On thermal decomposition താപീയ വിഘടനം (breaking down by heat), ammonium dichromate changes into chromium oxide (Cr2O3, the green powder), water vapour and nitrogen.

(NH4)2Cr2O7 → Cr2O3 + 4H2O + N2↑

Check: N 2 = 2 · H 8 = 4 × 2 = 8 · Cr 2 = 2 · O 7 = 3 + 4 = 7 ✔

Lead nitrate and calcium carbonate

– Examine the reactions given below.

2Pb(NO3)2 → 2PbO + 4NO2↑ + O2↑
CaCO3 → CaO + CO2↑
⚠ Teacher demonstration only. Lead compounds are poisonous, and heating lead nitrate gives off nitrogen dioxide, a toxic brown gas – fume cupboard and goggles only. Strong heating of any solid is done under the teacher's supervision.

Questions (page 98). Which substances underwent decomposition? Which products were obtained? (Names or formulae.)

⭐ Key idea 2 (textbook page 99)

A reaction in which one compound breaks down to form two or more substances is a decomposition reaction വിഘടന രാസപ്രവർത്തനം. Pattern: AB → A + B – the opposite of combination. When heat does the breaking, it is thermal decomposition താപീയ വിഘടനം.

🎬 Three decompositions, particle by particle

Question (page 99). Can you find more examples of decomposition reactions?

H₂O₂2H2O2 → 2H2O + O2↑ (hydrogen peroxide slowly breaks down – faster with a catalyst, page 8)

2HgO → 2Hg + O2↑ (red mercury oxide on heating – how oxygen was discovered); 2H2O → 2H2 + O2 when electricity is passed through acidified water (electrolysis: decomposition by electricity instead of heat).

❓ ? box (page 99). Take a little copper carbonate (CuCO3) in a boiling tube and heat it. What change did you observe? What are the products? Write the balanced chemical equation of the reaction.

⚠ Heating is done under your teacher's supervision, with goggles; point the boiling tube away from everyone. Remove the delivery tube from the lime water before taking away the flame, or the cold lime water can be sucked back into the hot tube.
🧪 Virtual lab · heating copper carbonate
The green powder turns black, and a gas that turns lime water milky is given off – carbon dioxide. Products: copper oxide (CuO, the black solid) and carbon dioxide (CO2).
CuCO3 → CuO + CO2↑ (Cu 1 = 1, C 1 = 1, O 3 = 1 + 2 ✔) – one compound gives two substances, so it is a decomposition (thermal decomposition) reaction.
🚗 Chemistry of the air bag in vehicles

Air bags open suddenly in an accident and protect the driver and passengers from the impact to some extent. The bag opens because a chemical called sodium azide (NaN3) undergoes a decomposition reaction and the nitrogen gas formed fills the bag:

2NaN3 → 2Na + 3N2↑

Sensors at the front of the vehicle detect a crash. They send an electrical signal that sets off a small amount of an igniter compound. The heat of this burning decomposes the sodium azide and produces the nitrogen needed to fill the bag – in only 0.03 second!

🎬 Crash test in slow motion

Sodium metal is dangerous, so real inflators also contain other chemicals that turn the sodium into harmless glassy compounds. The bag also has small holes, so it goes soft again straight after the impact.

5. Combination or decomposition? Look at the reactants

Combination A + B → AB
several reactants → one product. Often gives out heat (quicklime, burning).
Decomposition AB → A + B
one reactant → several products. Usually needs energy: heat, light or electricity.

6. Virtual lab: the reaction-type machine

Choose a reaction and predict its type first. The machine then runs it: the atoms of the reactants (top) move and regroup into the products, and the same thing happens to the letters of the general pattern (bottom).

⚙️ Reaction-type machine (combination · decomposition)

All equations are balanced – count the balls of each colour before and after: they never change. “Go further” reactions are not in the textbook.
