Solutions, Solutes & Solvents
The chapter begins with a puzzle from a school science fair: why won't enamel paint wash off in water when turpentine removes it at once? On this page you will learn the three words of the chapter: solute (ലീനം), solvent (ലായകം) and solution (ലായനി). You will meet solid, liquid and gaseous solutions (Table 6.1) and explore air as a solution of gases (Fig 6.1). Brass and 916 gold show how to decide which part is the solvent. Then the rule like dissolves like answers the paint puzzle. You will zoom in to watch water pull a salt crystal apart, and finish with the uses of solvents (Table 6.2).
1. The enamel-paint puzzle (page 113)
– For the science fair, a student painted a metal box with black enamel paint and then tried to wash the brush in water. But the paint would not come off the brush. What could be the reason?
Question (page 113). What could be the reason?
Question (pages 113–114). You know many substances that dissolve in water. Can you write them? Common salt, sugar, … And those that do not dissolve? Enamel paint, sand, …
Do not dissolve in water: enamel paint, sand, oil (coconut oil, kerosene, petrol), chalk powder, wax, iron filings, sawdust.
Potassium permanganate is left out of this lab on purpose: it is an oxidiser and must never be mixed with turpentine or other oils.
2. Solute, solvent and solution (page 114)
The substance that dissolves is the solute (ലീനം). The substance in which it dissolves is the solvent (ലായകം). When the solute dissolves in the solvent, a solution (ലായനി) is formed. In sugar water, sugar is the solute and water is the solvent.
– We have learnt that sugar solution is a homogeneous mixture. Solutions are homogeneous mixtures of two or more substances.
Mixtures that show the same properties in all parts are homogeneous mixtures (ഏകാത്മക മിശ്രിതങ്ങൾ).
– Another feature: the components of a solution do not react chemically with each other. The sugar is still sugar; evaporate the water and you get it back.
3. Different kinds of solutions – Table 6.1 (page 114)
– You have met many solutions in daily life. Most are liquid solutions (ദ്രാവകലായനി), but there are also solid solutions (ഖരലായനി) and gaseous solutions (വാതകലായനി).
– Find the solute and the solvent in each solution, identify their states and complete Table 6.1. Type solid, liquid or gas (or ഖരം · ദ്രാവകം · വാതകം).
Question (page 114). Is there any relation between the state of the solution and the state of the solvent? Look at the table.
4. Air – a gaseous solution (page 115, Fig 6.1)
– Why is pure air a gaseous solution? Look at the diagram showing the components of atmospheric air. Tap a gas.
Question (page 115). Why is pure air a gaseous solution?
5. Which part is the solute and which the solvent? (page 115)
– How do we decide the solute and the solvent in a solution? Look at brass.
Question (page 115). The alloy (ലോഹസങ്കരം) brass contains 34 % zinc (Zn) and 66 % copper (Cu). Find its solute and solvent from Table 6.1.
The component present in the smaller amount is the solute; the component in the larger amount is the solvent.
Question (page 115). Which component of atmospheric air is the solvent? Why?
In aqueous solutions (ജലീയ ലായനി), water is always the solvent, whatever its amount. So in a mixture of 60 mL alcohol and 40 mL water, water is still called the solvent (Table 6.1).
916 gold (box, page 115)
You have seen jewellery advertisements – the shops in Thrissur proudly say “ours is 916 gold”. What does that mean? In 1000 g of the ornament there are 916 g of pure gold, and the rest is silver and copper dissolved in it. Pure gold is too soft for ornaments, so this is needed to make them strong. So ornament gold is a solid solution (ഖരലായനി).
Jewellers also measure purity in carats: pure gold is 24 carat. 22 carat means 22 parts gold in 24 parts, and 22 ÷ 24 × 100 ≈ 91.7 %, so 916 gold is 22 carat gold. In India a hallmark stamp on the ornament (BIS) certifies the purity number.
6. Turpentine and organic solvents (page 115)
Question (page 115). The beginning of the lesson showed that some substances do not dissolve in water but dissolve in other solvents. Which solvent dissolved the enamel paint?
– Some solvents such as turpentine, kerosene and petrol are mixtures of various hydrocarbons. – Alcohol, carbon disulphide (CS₂), benzene (C₆H₆) and carbon tetrachloride (CCl₄) are organic solvents (ഓർഗാനിക് ലായകങ്ങൾ).
7. Like dissolves like (pages 115–116)
Question (page 115). Not all liquids mix to form a solution. Add kerosene, petrol and similar liquids one by one to water. Do they dissolve? Why?
Whether a solute dissolves in a solvent depends on the general principle “like dissolves like” (സമാനമായത് സമാനമായതിനെ ലയിപ്പിക്കും):
- Polar or ionic solutes dissolve in polar solvents: salt, sugar and copper sulphate dissolve in water.
- Non-polar solutes dissolve in non-polar solvents: enamel paint, grease, wax and oil dissolve in turpentine, kerosene or petrol.
- Ionic salt dissolves in water, but kerosene and petrol do not. സഹസംയോജക സംയുക്തങ്ങൾ പൊതുവെ ജലത്തിൽ ലയിക്കുന്നില്ല – covalent compounds generally do not dissolve in water.
| Solvent | Kind | Dissolves | Does not dissolve |
|---|---|---|---|
| water | polar | salt, sugar, glucose, copper sulphate, washing soda, alum, alcohol | kerosene, petrol, oil, wax, enamel paint |
| turpentine, kerosene, petrol | non-polar | enamel paint, grease, oil, wax | salt, sugar, copper sulphate |
Sugar, glucose and alcohol are covalent, yet they dissolve well in water. Their molecules have O–H groups with δ− and δ+ ends, just like water, so they are polar – “like” water. The rule “like dissolves like” still holds (see page 1).
8. How does salt dissolve in water? (box, page 116)
(NaCl). – Common salt, sodium chloride (NaCl), is an ionic compound formed when sodium and chlorine combine. In solid salt, sodium ions (Na⁺) and chloride ions (Cl⁻) are packed in a regular pattern, held together by the attraction between opposite charges. Follow the steps to see what water does to it.
When salt crystals are put in water, water molecules enter the crystal and surround the Na⁺ and Cl⁻ ions. In a water molecule the hydrogen atoms carry a partial positive charge (δ+) and the oxygen atom a partial negative charge (δ−). Water molecules approach each Na⁺ with their oxygen (δ−) side and each Cl⁻ with their hydrogen (δ+) side and surround them. This weakens the attraction between Na⁺ and Cl⁻, the ions tend to move apart freely, and many hydrated ions (ജലയോജിത അയോണുകൾ) form. The salt crystal loses its crystal structure and becomes an ionic solution (അയോണിക ലായനി): the Na⁺ and Cl⁻ ions separate as very tiny hydrated ions and dissolve in the water. What we observe here is that polar solutes dissolve in polar solvents – like dissolves like.
9. Uses of solvents in daily life – Table 6.2 (page 116)
– Water dissolves so many substances that it is called the universal solvent (സാർവിക ലായകം), and you know many of its uses. Now look at the uses of other solvents, including mixed solvents. Type a use for each in your own words; the checker looks for a key word.
Borax solution – to remove coffee and tea stains from things.
Alcohol – to dissolve aromatic oils when making perfumes.
Tincture of iodine (ടിഞ്ചർ അയോഡിൻ; a solution of 2–3 % iodine in alcohol and water, which also contains potassium iodide) – to clean wounds and as an antiseptic.
A mechanic cleans greasy hands with a little kerosene (non-polar dissolves non-polar), and then washes off the kerosene with soap and water. Painters clean brushes in turpentine. A drop of alcohol-based perfume spreads its scent because the aromatic oils are dissolved in alcohol.
- Solute (ലീനം) dissolves in a solvent (ലായകം) to form a solution (ലായനി): a homogeneous mixture whose components do not react.
- Solutions can be solid (brass, 916 gold), liquid (salt water, soda water) or gaseous (air). The solution usually has the state of the solvent.
- Smaller amount = solute, larger amount = solvent; in an aqueous solution water is always the solvent.
- Air: nitrogen 78 % (the solvent), oxygen 20.9 %, argon 0.90 %, others 0.17 %, CO₂ 0.03 %. Brass: zinc 34 % (solute) in copper 66 % (solvent).
- Like dissolves like: polar/ionic in polar (salt in water); non-polar in non-polar (paint in turpentine).
- Water molecules surround Na⁺ (O side) and Cl⁻ (H side) → hydrated ions → an ionic solution.
- “The solvent is always a liquid” ✗ – copper in brass is a solid solvent; nitrogen in air is a gaseous one.
- “In 60 mL alcohol + 40 mL water, alcohol is the solvent” ✗ – in an aqueous solution water is always the solvent.
- “Salt melts in water” ✗ – it dissolves: water molecules pull its ions apart at room temperature.
- “Kerosene dissolves in water if you shake hard” ✗ – it only breaks into droplets that float back up; non-polar does not dissolve in polar.
