Concentration and Mass Percentage
"Too much salt in the sambar!" "The curry needs a pinch more!" We all taste the difference between a little and a lot of salt. This page puts a number on it. You will drop potassium permanganate crystals into water, meet dilute and concentrated solutions, and learn the chemist's favourite way to write concentration: the mass percentage. There is also ppm for very tiny amounts, and a calculator that solves problems both forwards and backwards.
1. Light pink or deep purple? (the KMnO₄ experiment)
– You must have heard complaints that the food has too much salt, or too little. That difference in taste depends on the amount of salt added. Let us see the same idea with colour.
Take the same amount of water in two beakers. Put one or two crystals of potassium permanganate (KMnO₄) in the first, and five or six crystals in the second.
Both beakers hold the same volume of water. The colour depth in the model grows with the number of crystals, as it does in real life. The exact shades are illustrative.
Observe (page 117). Observe the difference in colour in the two beakers.
Beaker 1 (1–2 crystals):
Beaker 2 (5–6 crystals):
Q. What is the reason for the difference in colour between the two solutions?
– A solution with more solute has a higher concentration. So the concentration of a solution depends on the amount of solute in it.
The amount of solute dissolved in a definite amount of solution is the concentration of the solution ലായനിയുടെ ഗാഢത. If a solution has only a little solute it is a dilute solution നേർത്ത ലായനി; if it has more solute it is a concentrated solution ഗാഢലായനി.
A spoon of sugar in a glass of water is dilute compared with sugar syrup for jalebi, but concentrated compared with a pinch of sugar in a bucket. To compare solutions exactly we need a number. Many measures are used to state the concentration of a solution. Let us meet one of them.
2. Mass percentage
– Mass percentage states the mass of the solute dissolved in the solution as a percentage. In other words, it tells how many grams of solute there are in 100 g of the solution.
The bottom of the fraction is the whole solution, not just the water. This is the most common mistake in this chapter!
Worked example: 10 g of salt in 90 g of water
Suppose 10 g of salt is dissolved in 90 g of water. How do we work out the concentration as a mass percentage? Step through it:
| Mass of the solute ലീനത്തിന്റെ മാസ് | = 10 g |
| Mass of the solvent ലായകത്തിന്റെ മാസ് | = 90 g |
| Mass of the solution ലായനിയുടെ മാസ് | = 10 g + 90 g = 100 g |
| Mass percentage
What does "15 %" mean?
Q (page 118). If someone says the concentration of the salt water they made is 15 %, what does it mean?
Your turn: the in-text question
A solution is made by adding 2 g of a substance A to 18 g of water. Calculate the mass percentage of the solution.
Mass percentage = 220 × 100 = 10 %.
(If you divided by 18 and got 11.1 %, you used the solvent instead of the solution.) Watch it step by step below.
3. Why industry cares: the bleaching solution
– Finding concentration as a mass percentage is important when many industrial products are made. For example, the bleaching solution used in industry is an aqueous solution ജലീയ ലായനി of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) with a mass percentage of 3.62.
- 100 g of the bleaching solution contains 3.62 g of sodium hypochlorite and 100 − 3.62 = 96.38 g of water.
- 1 kg (1000 g) of it contains 3.62 × 10 = 36.2 g of NaOCl.
- Too weak and it will not bleach or disinfect; too strong and it damages cloth and is dangerous. This shows why measurements must be exact.
4. Very tiny amounts: parts per million (ppm)
- Parts per million (ppm) tells how many parts of solute there are in a million (10⁶) parts of the solution, by mass. It is used for solutes present in very small amounts.
- Chlorine in drinking water: 4 ppm.
- Oxygen dissolved in sea water: 5.8 ppm.
- Carbon dioxide (CO₂), a greenhouse gas, in the atmosphere: 270 ppm before industrialisation → 414 ppm today. This rise is one of the causes of global warming.
- Other measures of concentration: volume percentage, molarity and molality വോളിയം പെർസെന്റേജ്, മൊളാരിറ്റി, മൊളാലിറ്റി (you will meet these in higher classes).
1 ppm = 1 g in 1 000 000 g = 1 mg in 1 kg. 1 % = 10 000 ppm.
For gases in the air, scientists usually count ppm by volume (molecules), not by mass. 414 ppm of CO₂ means 414 out of every million molecules of air. As a percentage that is only 414 ÷ 10 000 = 0.0414 %, yet the rise from 270 ppm (an increase of 144 ppm, about 53 %) is enough to warm the whole planet.
5. Mass-percentage calculator – forwards and backwards
Real problems come in three shapes. Pick one, type the numbers and read the working. The bar shows the whole solution split into solute and solvent; the 100-square grid shows the percentage.
Practice: backwards problems (type the number, then check)
1. How much sugar is needed to make 250 g of an 8 % sugar solution? How much water?
2. Anu has 25 g of salt. How much water must she add to make a 10 % salt solution?
3. A bottle holds 500 g of the 3.62 % bleaching solution. What mass of NaOCl does it contain?
2. 25 g must be 10 % of the solution, so the solution = 25 × 100 ÷ 10 = 250 g; water = 250 − 25 = 225 g (225 mL).
3. NaOCl = 500 × 3.62 ÷ 100 = 18.1 g.
- Dividing by the mass of the solvent ✗ – always divide by the mass of the solution (solute + solvent).
- "15 % means 15 g in 100 g of water" ✗ – it means 15 g in 100 g of solution (85 g water).
- Forgetting "× 100" and writing 0.1 instead of 10 %.
- Thinking a dark colour always means "concentrated" – a colourless sugar solution can be very concentrated too. Colour is only a clue for coloured solutes like KMnO₄.

6. Check yourself
- Concentration ലായനിയുടെ ഗാഢത = the amount of solute in a definite amount of solution. Little solute → dilute നേർത്ത ലായനി; more solute → concentrated ഗാഢലായനി.
- Mass percentage മാസ് പെർസെന്റേജ് = (mass of solute ÷ mass of solution) × 100 = grams of solute in 100 g of solution.
- 10 g salt + 90 g water → 10 %. 2 g A + 18 g water → 10 %. 15 % → 15 g salt in 100 g solution.
- Industrial bleaching solution: 3.62 % NaOCl. ppm = parts in 10⁶ parts: chlorine in drinking water 4 ppm, O₂ in sea water 5.8 ppm, CO₂ in air 270 → 414 ppm.
