True Solutions, Suspensions and Colloids യഥാർഥ ലായനി · സസ്പെൻഷൻ · കൊളോയിഡുകൾ

Stir sugar into water and it vanishes. Stir chalk powder into water and the water turns cloudy, then slowly clears as the chalk sinks. Milk does neither. It stays white and never settles. And why can you see the beam of the projector in a dusty classroom but not in clean air? On this page you sort mixtures into true solutions യഥാർഥ ലായനി, suspensions സസ്പെൻഷൻ and colloids കൊളോയിഡുകൾ, and you meet the Tyndall effect ടിൻഡൽ പ്രഭാവം.

📖 What you need (pages 1 and 2 of this guide)

1. Sugar water and chalk water യഥാർഥ ലായനി, സസ്പെൻഷൻ (Fig 6.7)

പദാർഥങ്ങൾ പരസ്പരം കലർത്തിയാൽ ലായനികൾ ഉണ്ടാകുമോ? കലർത്തിനോക്കാം. Does mixing two substances always make a solution? Let us mix and see.

Beaker 1 ബീക്കർ 1: water + sugar  ·  Beaker 2 ബീക്കർ 2: water + chalk powder. രണ്ട് ബീക്കറുകളിലെയും ഘടകങ്ങളെ നന്നായി ഇളക്കിയതിനുശേഷം നിരീക്ഷിക്കുക. Stir both well and observe. Then do the three tests in the lab: leave them undisturbed, shine a strong beam of light through the side, and filter each one.

🔦 Virtual lab – Fig 6.7: sugar solution and chalk water

In the real experiment, do the light test in a dim room with a strong torch. Shine it from the side and look at the beaker from the front.

Q (page 123–124). Answer from the experiment:

കണങ്ങളെ കാണാൻ കഴിയുന്നത് ഏത് ബീക്കറിലാണ്? In which beaker can you see the particles?

കുറച്ചുസമയം അനക്കാതെവെച്ചതിനുശേഷം പരിശോധിച്ചാലോ? കണങ്ങൾ അടിഞ്ഞത് ഏത് ബീക്കറിലാണ്? After leaving them undisturbed for some time, in which beaker have the particles settled?

പ്രകാശത്തിന്റെ പാത ദൃശ്യമാകുന്നത് ഏത് ബീക്കറിലാണ്? Stir both again and pass a strong beam of light through the side. In which beaker is the path of the light visible?

ഓരോ മിശ്രിതവും ഫിൽട്ടർ പേപ്പർ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് അരിക്കുക. കണങ്ങളെ വേർതിരിക്കാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞത് ഏതിലാണ്? Filter each mixture through filter paper. In which one could the particles be separated?

1. Particles visible: beaker 2 (chalk). 2. Particles settled: beaker 2. 3. Path of light visible: beaker 2. 4. Particles separated by filtering: beaker 2, where the chalk is left on the filter paper.
In beaker 1 you see none of these things. The sugar solution stays clear, nothing settles, the beam cannot be seen inside it, and nothing is left on the filter paper.
⭐ True solution and suspension (page 124)

The mixture of water and sugar is a true solution യഥാർഥ ലായനി. It is a homogeneous mixture, so its components are in the same proportion in every part of the mixture. The mixture of chalk powder and water is called a suspension സസ്പെൻഷൻ. If the components are not in the same proportion in every part of a mixture, it is called a heterogeneous mixture ഭിന്നാത്മക മിശ്രിതം.

Q (page 124). ഇവ ഭിന്നാത്മക (heterogeneous) മിശ്രിതമായിരിക്കുന്നത് എന്തുകൊണ്ടായിരിക്കും? മിശ്രിതത്തിന്റെ എല്ലാ ഭാഗത്തും ഘടകങ്ങൾ ഒരേ അനുപാതത്തിലാണോ ചേർന്നിരിക്കുന്നത്? Why is chalk water a heterogeneous mixture? Are the components in the same proportion in every part of the mixture?

No. The chalk particles are scattered unevenly, and on standing they collect at the bottom. A spoonful from the bottom then has much more chalk than a spoonful from the top. Since the proportion is different in different parts, chalk water is heterogeneous.

ഭിന്നാത്മകമിശ്രിതങ്ങൾക്ക് കൂടുതൽ ഉദാഹരണങ്ങൾ കണ്ടെത്തൂ. Q. Find more examples of heterogeneous mixtures.

Sand in water, muddy water (ചെളിവെള്ളം), oil and water, wheat flour or rice flour stirred into water, sawdust in water, iron filings mixed with sulphur powder, a mixture of salt and sand, and the soil itself.

ചെളിവെള്ളം ഒരു സസ്പെൻഷനാണ് എന്ന് പറയുന്നത് എന്തെല്ലാം സവിശേഷതകളുടെ അടിസ്ഥാനത്തിലാണ്? Q. On the basis of which features do we say that muddy water is a suspension?

  • The mud particles can be seen with the naked eye.
  • On standing, they settle at the bottom and the water above becomes clearer.
  • They can be separated by filtering and are left on the filter paper.
  • A beam of light passing through it is visible, because the particles scatter the light.
These are exactly the properties of the chalk water in beaker 2.

2. Table 6.3 – true solution or suspension?

നിങ്ങൾ നടത്തിയ നിരീക്ഷണങ്ങളിൽ നിന്ന് യഥാർഥ ലായനി, സസ്പെൻഷൻ എന്നിവയുടെ സവിശേഷതകൾ പട്ടികപ്പെടുത്താമല്ലോ. വിട്ടുപോയത് പൂർത്തിയാക്കുക. From your observations, list the features of a true solution and a suspension. Complete the blanks: choose from each box, then press Check.

Q (page 124). ഇവിടെ നിരീക്ഷണങ്ങളിലുള്ള വ്യത്യാസത്തിന് കാരണമെന്തായിരിക്കും? ലീനത്തിന്റെ കണികകളുടെ വലിപ്പ വ്യത്യാസമായിരിക്കില്ലേ? What could be the reason for the difference in the observations? Isn't it the difference in the size of the particles?

Yes, it is the particle size.
True solution: യഥാർഥ ലായനിയിൽ ലീനകണങ്ങളുടെ വലിപ്പം തീരെ കുറവാണ്. The solute particles are extremely small. They cannot be seen with the naked eye or even with a microscope. Because they are so small, they cannot scatter light, so the path of the light is not visible. They also pass through filter paper and never settle.
Suspension: സസ്പെൻഷനുകളിൽ ലീനകണങ്ങൾ നഗ്നനേത്രങ്ങൾകൊണ്ട് കാണാൻ കഴിയുന്നത്ര വലിപ്പമുള്ളവയാണ്. The particles are large enough to be seen with the naked eye. They scatter light, and because of gravity ഗുരുത്വാകർഷണം they slowly settle. They can also be filtered off.

3. Colloids കൊളോയിഡുകൾ – is milk a solution or a suspension?

ലായനികളെക്കുറിച്ചും സസ്പെൻഷനുകളെ കുറിച്ചും നാം മനസ്സിലാക്കി. ഇവ രണ്ടിലും പെടാത്ത മിശ്രിതങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടോ? പാൽ ഈ പറയുന്ന വിഭാഗത്തിൽ വരുമോ? We have learnt about solutions and suspensions. Are there mixtures that belong to neither group? Does milk belong to such a group? ഒരു ബീക്കറിൽ പാലും വെള്ളവും കലർന്ന മിശ്രിതമെടുത്ത് മുമ്പ് നടത്തിയ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ ആവർത്തിക്കൂ. Take a mixture of milk and water in a beaker and repeat the tests you did before.

🥛 Virtual lab – milk + water: look, shine, wait, filter

Q (page 125). നിരീക്ഷണങ്ങൾ ടിക്ക് (✓) ചെയ്യുക. Tick your observations: true ശരി or false തെറ്റ്?

കണങ്ങളെ നഗ്നനേത്രങ്ങൾ കൊണ്ട് കാണാൻ കഴിയുന്നു. The particles can be seen with the naked eye.
പ്രകാശത്തിന്റെ പാത ദൃശ്യമാണ്. The path of the light is visible.
കണങ്ങൾ അരിച്ചെടുക്കാൻ കഴിയുന്നു. The particles can be filtered off.
Particles seen with the naked eye – false ✗. Path of light visible – true ✓. Particles can be filtered – false ✗.
ലായനികളിലേതെന്നപോലെ ഇവയിലെ കണങ്ങളെ നഗ്നനേത്രങ്ങൾകൊണ്ട് കാണാൻ കഴിയില്ല. സസ്പെൻഷനുകളിലേതുപോലെ അടിയുകയുമില്ല. പ്രകാശബീം കടത്തിവിട്ടാൽ പാത ദൃശ്യമാവുകയും ചെയ്യും. As in solutions, the particles in milk cannot be seen with the naked eye. Unlike a suspension, they do not settle. But when a beam of light is passed through, its path is visible.
⭐ Colloids (page 125)
ലായനികൾക്കും സസ്പെൻഷനുകൾക്കും ഇടയിലുള്ള ഇത്തരം മിശ്രിതമാണ് കൊളോയിഡുകൾ. പാൽ ഒരു കൊളോയിഡാണെന്ന് മനസ്സിലാക്കാമല്ലോ.

Mixtures like this, which lie between solutions and suspensions, are called colloids കൊളോയിഡുകൾ. So milk is a colloid.

Q (page 125). In a cinema theatre or a smart classroom, when dust rises into the air while the projector is showing pictures, the path of the light becomes clearly visible. What is the reason?

പൊടിപടലങ്ങളിലെ കണികാവലിപ്പം കൊളോയിഡുകളിലേതിന് തുല്യമാണ്. The size of the dust particles is the same as that of colloid particles. Dust in air is a colloid. The tiny dust particles scatter the light from the projector sideways into our eyes, so we see the beam. In clean air there is nothing big enough to scatter the light, and the beam cannot be seen from the side.

4. How big are the particles? കണികാവലിപ്പം – നാനോമീറ്ററിൽ

These sizes span a huge range, from a hundredth of a nanometre up to a thousand and more. On an ordinary ruler they would not fit, so the ruler below is a log scale: every big step to the right is 10 times bigger than the one before. Slide the particle along it.

📏 Size ruler – from ions to sand grains (log scale, nm)

Sizes of the everyday particles are rough, typical values. Real milk, smoke and dust have particles of many sizes.

5. Table 6.4 – three kinds of mixture

മുകളിൽ നടത്തിയ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളിൽ നിന്ന് യഥാർഥ ലായനി, സസ്പെൻഷൻ, കൊളോയിഡ് എന്നിവയുടെ സവിശേഷതകൾ പട്ടികപ്പെടുത്താമല്ലോ. From the activities above, list the features of a true solution, a suspension and a colloid. The book leaves Table 6.4 empty for you. Choose an entry for every box and press Check.

🔭 Go further – does a colloid look homogeneous?

To the eye, milk looks the same all through, like a solution. Under a powerful microscope you would see tiny droplets of fat and clusters of protein floating in the water. So a colloid appears homogeneous but is really heterogeneous on a very small scale. That is why it sits between the two.

6. Watching a colloid form – sodium thiosulphate and acid (Fig 6.8)

Take 50 mL of water in a beaker and dissolve 2 g of sodium thiosulphate (Na₂S₂O₃·5H₂O) in it. Place the beaker in the path of a beam of light, as in the picture. Add two or three drops of dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl) and stir well. Watch for some time.

⚠️ Dilute HCl is handled by the teacher. The reaction gives off a little sulphur dioxide, a choking gas: use only the small amounts given, in a well-ventilated room, and do not smell the beaker. Never look straight into the torch.
⏱️ Virtual lab – Fig 6.8: a light beam through sodium thiosulphate + HCl

The clock runs about 90 times faster than real time at normal speed. The times and sizes are illustrative: in a real beaker they depend on the amounts and the temperature.

Q (page 126). നിരീക്ഷണഫലം Write down your observation.

At first the solution is clear and the beam cannot be seen inside it. After a short time the liquid slowly becomes milky (cloudy), pale yellow, and the path of the beam becomes clearly visible. Later, yellowish particles appear and slowly settle at the bottom.
The reaction produces sulphur in colloidal form, so a path of light forms. As time passes more sulphur separates and the particles grow bigger. In the end the sulphur settles as a suspension.
Go further, the equation: Na₂S₂O₃ + 2HCl → 2NaCl + SO₂ + H₂O + S↓.
⭐ Tyndall effect (page 126)
കൊളോയിഡൽ കണികകളിൽ തട്ടി പ്രകാശം വിസരിക്കുന്നതാണ് ടിൻഡൽ പ്രഭാവം (Tyndall effect) എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്.

The scattering of light when it strikes colloidal particles is known as the Tyndall effect ടിൻഡൽ പ്രഭാവം. It is the easiest way to tell a colloid from a true solution that looks just as clear.

7. The Tyndall effect in daily life

നിത്യജീവിതത്തിൽ ഇത്തരം പ്രതിഭാസങ്ങൾക്ക് കൂടുതൽ ഉദാഹരണങ്ങൾ കണ്ടെത്താൻ ശ്രമിക്കൂ. Q (page 126). Try to find more examples of this effect in daily life. Look at the four scenes below first.

🌄 Spot the Tyndall effect
  • Sunlight entering a dark room through a gap in the roof tiles or a window. The beam shows the dust in the air.
  • The headlights of a vehicle on a misty ghat road (for example on the way to Munnar or Wayanad), or in fog. The tiny water droplets of the mist scatter the light.
  • Sunbeams through the trees of a forest on a misty morning.
  • The beam of a cinema or classroom projector when there is dust or smoke in the air.
  • The beam of a torch shone into smoke from a kitchen fire or a mosquito coil.
  • A torch beam through a glass of diluted milk or kanji vellam (rice water).
In each case the light is scattered by particles of colloidal size: dust, smoke, or droplets of water.

8. The torch-beam lab – test any mixture

Pick a mixture, run the four tests and then decide: true solution, colloid or suspension? Use the three clues together, as a chemist would. One clue on its own can mislead you. Milk and chalk water both look cloudy, but only one of them settles.
