Carbon and Its Allotropes

A sparkling diamond in a necklace, the grey "lead" of your pencil and the black charcoal in a grill are all made of the same atoms: carbon. How can one element be the hardest natural substance and also soft enough to write with? The answer is in how the atoms are joined. On this page you turn a diamond in 3-D, slide graphite layers, peel off graphene and spin a buckyball.

📖 What you need (pages 1 and 2 of this guide)

1. Carbon

– Carbon is present in almost all the substances around us: food, wood, cloth, plastics, fuels and our own bodies. New carbon compounds are discovered or made every day. In nature carbon is found both in the free state സ്വതന്ത്രാവസ്ഥ (diamond, graphite, coal) and in the combined state സംയുക്താവസ്ഥ (carbon dioxide, limestone, sugar, petrol …).

Science diary (page 137). Look at the periodic table and record the position, atomic number and electron configuration of carbon.

Atomic number
Electron configuration
Group
Period
Carbon (C): atomic number 6; electron configuration 2, 4; group 14, period 2. With 4 electrons in its outer shell, carbon forms 4 covalent bonds – its valency is 4.

2. Allotropes of carbon

– Charcoal, coal and diamond are familiar things, and their properties are very different. But did you know they are all different forms of the same element, carbon? Burn any of them completely in oxygen and you get only carbon dioxide.

⭐ Allotropes and allotropy (page 137)

Different forms of the same element with different physical properties are called allotropes രൂപാന്തരങ്ങൾ, and this phenomenon is called allotropy രൂപാന്തരത്വം.

The allotropes of carbon are classified into two groups: crystalline ക്രിസ്റ്റലീയ and amorphous അമോർഫസ്. Examine Fig 7.3 – tap any form.

🌳 Fig 7.3 – the allotropes of carbon

3. Crystalline allotropes

– Crystalline allotropes have a definite geometric shape. In their crystal structure the particles are arranged in order, and this arrangement repeats in three dimensions. Let us meet the crystalline allotropes of carbon.

Diamond വജ്രം (Fig 7.4)

Diamond is the hardest substance found in nature. Its special properties come from its crystal structure. Examine it in 3-D:

💎 Fig 7.4 – the diamond crystal in 3-D (drag to turn)

Questions on Fig 7.4 (page 138).

In diamond, with how many surrounding carbon atoms does each carbon atom form covalent bonds?

What is the valency of carbon?

Are there free electrons in diamond?

1. Four. 2. 4. 3. No – all four outer electrons of each carbon are used in bonds.

– In diamond each carbon atom is joined by covalent bonds to four carbon atoms around it. These strong bonds, running in all directions, make diamond so hard. Because there are no free electrons in this structure, diamond does not conduct electricity.

Some special properties of diamond
  • Very high hardness
  • Does not conduct electricity
  • High thermal conductivity
  • High refractive index ഉയർന്ന അപവർത്തനാങ്കം – light bends a lot inside it and is reflected back again and again, so a cut diamond sparkles.

Q (page 138). Why is diamond used to make jewellery and to cut glass? Find out from its properties.

Jewellery: its high refractive index makes a cut diamond sparkle brilliantly, and its hardness means it does not get scratched. Glass cutting: it is the hardest natural substance, so its edge can scratch and cut glass (and drill rock) without wearing away.

Graphite ഗ്രാഫൈറ്റ് (Fig 7.5)

Graphite is another crystalline allotrope of carbon. Examine its structure:

✏️ Fig 7.5 – graphite: layers that slide, electrons that flow

Questions on Fig 7.5 (pages 138–139).

In graphite, with how many surrounding carbon atoms does each carbon form covalent bonds?

How many free electrons does each carbon atom in graphite have?

Why does graphite conduct electricity?

Each carbon in graphite uses only three of its four outer electrons in bonds, so one electron per carbon is free. These free electrons can move along the layers and carry the current – press "Connect a battery" to see them drift.

– In graphite each carbon is bonded covalently to three carbon atoms around it.

– Graphite is made of layers stacked one above another. There are no covalent bonds between the layers, only weak forces of attraction. So the layers can slide over each other, and graphite is used as a lubricant സ്നേഹകം.

💡 Conductivity tester – graphite or diamond?

Graphene ഗ്രഫീൻ (Fig 7.6)

– Graphene is a sheet made of two-dimensional hexagonal rings of carbon atoms. Graphene is the same as one layer of graphite – just one atom thick.

🕸️ Fig 7.6 – peel one layer off graphite
Special properties of graphene
About 1/200 the weight of steel and 1/5 the weight of aluminium (as given in the textbook).
  • High electrical conductivity
  • High thermal conductivity

Graphene has already become a material that can bring a big revolution in nanotechnology നാനോടെക്നോളജി.

🔭 Go further – a note on the numbers

Graphene is so thin that a sheet of it is astonishingly light. Science books often add that, for the same thickness, graphene is about 200 times stronger than steel. The textbook's "1/200 of the weight of steel" is about this lightness. In the exam, quote the textbook's words. Graphene was first separated in 2004 by peeling graphite with sticky tape – the scientists won the Nobel Prize in 2010.

Fullerene ഫുള്ളറീൻ (Fig 7.7)

– Fullerenes have a hollow, ball-like shape made of pentagonal and hexagonal rings of carbon atoms. They are called buckyballs ബക്കിബോൾസ്.

– Cylinder-shaped fullerenes are used as carbon nanotubes; they are called buckytubes ബക്കിട്യൂബ്സ്. They have brought a revolution in information and communication technology.

The C₆₀ molecule was discovered in 1985 by Harold Kroto, Robert Curl and Richard Smalley (Nobel Prize, 1996). It is named after the architect Buckminster Fuller, whose dome-shaped buildings are made of the same pattern of pentagons and hexagons – the pattern of a football.

4. Amorphous allotropes

– Amorphous allotropes are solids without a definite crystal structure. Charcoal, coke, lamp black and coal are the different amorphous allotropes of carbon.

⚫ Charcoal

Made by heating wood with very little air. A fuel; its porous surface traps impurities, so it is used in water filters.

🪨 Coke

Made by strongly heating coal without air. A smokeless fuel, and a reducing agent for getting iron from its ore.

🪔 Lamp black

The soot of a smoky oil flame – the black of traditional kanmashi. Used in printing ink, black paint and rubber tyres.

⛏️ Coal

A fossil fuel formed from plants buried for millions of years. Burnt in thermal power stations; used to make coke.

The uses on these cards are extra information – the textbook only names the four amorphous forms.

⚠️ Never burn charcoal or coal in a closed room (for warmth or cooking): with too little air it forms carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas with no colour or smell (page 6).

5. Uses of graphite and its properties (page 140)

Some uses of graphite are given. Find and write the property that makes each use possible.

a. As an electrode in dry cells

b. To make pencil lead

c. As a lubricant

a. Electrode in dry cells – graphite conducts electricity (each carbon has one free electron). b. Pencil lead – graphite is soft and dark; its layers rub off on paper and leave a mark. c. Lubricant – the layers slide over each other because only weak forces hold them together.

6. Diamond and graphite compared
