Carbon Dioxide, Carbon Monoxide, Carbonates
Open a bottle of soda and it fizzes. Squeeze a lemon onto appakkaaram and it froths. Point a school fire extinguisher at a fire and a white cloud smothers it. All three are the work of one gas, carbon dioxide. Its close cousin, carbon monoxide, has one oxygen atom fewer, and it is a silent killer. On this page you make CO₂ in a virtual lab, test it with lime water ചുണ്ണാമ്പുവെള്ളം, watch what CO does to your blood, and learn to identify a carbonate കാർബണേറ്റുകൾ.

Marble chips (calcium carbonate) sit in a flask. Dilute hydrochloric acid is poured in through a thistle funnel തിസിൽ ഫണൽ, and the gas travels along a delivery tube to the bottom of a gas jar.
The shading in the gas jar shows where the carbon dioxide is. In real life the gas is invisible. Notice that it fills the jar from the bottom up.

Q (page 141). How can you tell that the gas formed here is CO₂?
Calcium carbonate and dilute hydrochloric acid react to give CO₂. When this gas is passed through clear lime water (Ca(OH)₂), the lime water turns milky.
CO₂ reacts with the dissolved calcium hydroxide to form tiny particles of insoluble calcium carbonate, which make the liquid look milky:
Ca(OH)₂ + CO₂ → CaCO₃↓ + H₂O(If you keep bubbling CO₂ for a long time, the milkiness slowly disappears again, because soluble calcium bicarbonate forms. So do not overdo the test.)
3. Uses of carbon dioxide
CO₂ does not burn or support burning, and it is denser than air, so it settles over the fire like a blanket and cuts off oxygen.
CO₂ is dissolved under pressure. When you open the bottle, the pressure drops and the gas fizzes out.
Used to make washing soda അലക്കുകാരം (Na₂CO₃·10H₂O) and baking soda അപ്പക്കാരം (NaHCO₃), the appakkaaram that makes appam soft.
CO₂ is a raw material for making chemical fertilisers such as urea.
A mixture of O₂ 95 % and CO₂ 5 %, used for artificial respiration.
Solid carbon dioxide. On stage shows it is used to make the stage look full of "smoke" (white fog).
4. Properties of carbon dioxide – tick the right ones
Q (page 143). From the pairs below, tick the properties of carbon dioxide. Use what you saw in the lab.
5. Carbon monoxide (CO)
When carbon burns with too much carbon or too little oxygen, this reaction takes place:
Compare it with burning in plenty of oxygen, C + O₂ → CO₂. With too little oxygen, each carbon atom gets only one oxygen atom. The gas formed is carbon monoxide. It is a poisonous gas, and it has no colour and no smell, so you cannot tell it is there.
Carbon monoxide reacts with the haemoglobin in blood to form carboxyhaemoglobin കാർബോക്സീഹീമോഗ്ലോബിൻ. Because of this, the blood's ability to carry oxygen falls, and this can cause death.
A model, not real numbers. In real blood each haemoglobin molecule carries up to four oxygen molecules, and CO holds on to haemoglobin about 200 times more strongly than oxygen does. That is why even a little CO in the air slowly takes over the seats.
Uses of carbon monoxide
- As a gaseous fuel (it burns: 2CO + O₂ → 2CO₂).
- To make the industrial fuels water gas വാട്ടർ ഗ്യാസ് (CO + H₂) and producer gas പ്രൊഡ്യൂസർ ഗ്യാസ് (CO + N₂).
- As a reducing agent നിരോക്സീകാരി in the extraction of metals (it takes oxygen away from metal oxides).
Water gas has H₂ (water contains hydrogen) · Producer gas has N₂ (it is made by blowing air, which is mostly nitrogen, over hot coke). Both contain CO.
6. Carbonates and bicarbonates
Carbonates and bicarbonates are other compounds that contain carbon. Examples: washing soda അലക്കുകാരം (Na₂CO₃·10H₂O), baking soda അപ്പക്കാരം (NaHCO₃) and marble (CaCO₃).
Carbonates and bicarbonates are the salts of carbonic acid (H₂CO₃) കാർബോണിക് ആസിഡ്. A carbonate contains the CO₃²⁻ ion (Na₂CO₃, CaCO₃); a bicarbonate contains the HCO₃⁻ ion (NaHCO₃).

How can you tell whether a salt is a carbonate? Do the test below and record the observation and the inference. Try all three salt solutions.
Table 7.3 (page 142). Fill in the observation and the inference for a carbonate, then press Check.
If the white precipitate formed with BaCl₂ dissolves in dilute hydrochloric acid (with fizzing), the given salt is a carbonate.
A sulphate also gives a white precipitate with BaCl₂ (Na₂SO₄ + BaCl₂ → BaSO₄↓ + 2NaCl), but barium sulphate does not dissolve in dilute HCl. So the white precipitate alone only says "may be a carbonate"; the fizzing in acid confirms it. The fizzing gas is CO₂ – it turns lime water milky.
7. Match column A with column B
Q (page 143). For each item in column A, choose the matching item from column B. The book leaves the last A box empty – B has one extra entry. Choose what belongs there.
- "CO₂ helps things burn" ✗ – it puts fires out. Oxygen is the gas that supports burning.
- Writing the CO₂ preparation as CaCO₃ + HCl → … without the 2 in front of HCl ✗ – the chlorine atoms will not balance.
- Mixing up washing soda Na₂CO₃·10H₂O and baking soda NaHCO₃; and water gas (CO + H₂) with producer gas (CO + N₂).
- Thinking you can smell carbon monoxide ✗ – it is colourless and odourless, which is what makes it so dangerous.

- Lab preparation: CaCO₃ + 2HCl → CaCl₂ + H₂O + CO₂ (thistle funnel, flask, gas collected at the bottom of a jar). Test: CO₂ turns clear lime water milky.
- CO₂ is colourless, odourless, denser than air, does not support combustion; its solution in water is acidic. Uses: fire extinguishers, soda drinks, washing soda and baking soda, urea, carbogen (O₂ 95 %, CO₂ 5 %), dry ice.
- 2C + O₂ → 2CO when oxygen is short. CO is poisonous: it forms carboxyhaemoglobin, so blood carries less oxygen. Uses: gaseous fuel, water gas (CO + H₂), producer gas (CO + N₂), reducing agent.
- Carbonates and bicarbonates are salts of carbonic acid (H₂CO₃). Test: BaCl₂ gives a white precipitate that dissolves with fizzing in dilute HCl → carbonate.
