Nitrogen, Nitrogen Fixation and Fertilisers
Every breath you take is about four-fifths nitrogen, yet your body cannot use a single molecule of it. Plants are hungry for nitrogen too, but they cannot take it straight from the air. So how does nitrogen get from the sky into a paddy plant or a payar plant? The answer involves a monsoon lightning bolt, tiny bacteria living in root bumps, and fertiliser factories like FACT at Udyogamandal. On this page you follow nitrogen on that journey.
- Nitrogen: atomic number 7, electronic configuration 2,5, group 15. It forms a diatomic molecule ദ്വയാറ്റോമിക തന്മാത്ര, N₂ (page 1).
- In a covalent bond two atoms share a pair of electrons; a double bond shares two pairs, a triple bond three (page 1).
- Combustion needs a fuel, oxygen and heat (page 2).
1. Nitrogen in air and in living things
Nitrogen is the gas found in the largest amount in air. All living things contain nitrogen (it is in every protein and in DNA). It is an element essential for the growth of plants.
2. Why is nitrogen inert?
Q (page 143). At ordinary conditions, the nitrogen in the atmosphere is inert (it hardly reacts). Write the reason.
3. Nitrogen and combustion
Q (page 143). Answer, then try the jar below.
Which gas supports combustion?
Which gas helps to control the rate of combustion?
A model: flame sizes are illustrative. A real candle goes out when the oxygen falls below roughly 15–16 %. Pure oxygen is a serious fire risk, which is why "no flames" signs hang near hospital oxygen cylinders.
4. From the sky to the soil (1): lightning
Plants cannot absorb nitrogen directly from the air. Let us see the ways in which atmospheric nitrogen reaches plants.
1. Through lightning: the enormous heat of a lightning flash breaks the triple bond in the nitrogen molecule, and nitrogen combines with oxygen to form nitric oxide (NO).
Q (page 143). Complete: N₂ + O₂ → ……
Nitric oxide combines with more oxygen to form nitrogen dioxide (NO₂). In the presence of oxygen, nitrogen dioxide dissolves in rain water and reaches the soil as nitric acid (HNO₃). Nitric acid reacts with minerals in the soil to form nitrate salts, which plants absorb.
For example, with limestone in the soil: 2HNO₃ + CaCO₃ → Ca(NO₃)₂ + H₂O + CO₂ Calcium nitrate dissolves in soil water and is taken up by the roots. Every equation in the chain is balanced – count the N, O and H atoms yourself.
5. From the sky to the soil (2): nitrogen fixation
2. Through nitrogen fixation: Rhizobium bacteria living in the roots of pulse plants (payar, uzhunnu, groundnut, peas) take in atmospheric nitrogen and turn it into compounds that plants can absorb. They live in small swellings on the roots called root nodules.
Healthy nodules are pink inside. Farmers in Kerala often grow payar or other pulses between paddy crops: the nodules leave nitrogen compounds in the soil for the next crop.
6. Organic manure and chemical fertilisers
Q (page 144). What are the ways to supply plants with larger amounts of the elements they need for growth?
• Using chemical fertilisers രാസവളം (urea, ammonium sulphate, factamfos and other N, P, K fertilisers).
Look at the features of organic manure and chemical fertilisers in Table 7.4.
| Organic manure ജൈവവളം | Chemical fertiliser രാസവളം |
|---|---|
| Keeps the soil in its natural state
| Delay in making the nutrients available പോഷകങ്ങൾ ലഭ്യമാക്കുന്നതിൽ കാലതാമസം | All three nutrients (N, P, K) are available quickly മൂന്ന് പോഷക ഘടകങ്ങളും (N.P.K) വേഗത്തിൽ ലഭിക്കുന്നു. |
| Micro-organisms are not destroyed | Changes the biological structure of the soil |
| Has to be used in larger quantities | Increases the acidity of the soil |
| Reduces the chance of pollution |
Table 7.4
Q (page 144). On the basis of Table 7.4, write the merits and limitations of chemical fertilisers and organic manure. Sort each feature: is it a merit (good point) or a limitation (weak point)?
| Merits | Limitations | |
|---|---|---|
| Organic manure ജൈവവളം | eco-friendly; keeps the soil natural; does not harm soil micro-organisms; less pollution | nutrients become available slowly; large quantities are needed |
| Chemical fertiliser രാസവളം | higher yield; easily available; N, P and K act quickly | changes the biological structure of the soil; makes the soil acidic; causes pollution |
In agriculture, we should follow a scientific and judicious (sensible) use of fertilisers – the right type, in the right amount, at the right time, after testing the soil.
Debate: the role of organic manure and chemical fertilisers in agriculture
Activity (page 145). Organise a debate under the science club on "the role of organic manure and chemical fertilisers in agriculture". Draw cards from the deck below to prepare your points.
- Two teams of 3–4: one speaks for organic manure, one for chemical fertilisers. A chairperson (the science club secretary) keeps time; two or three judges score.
- Opening: each team gets 2 minutes. Use Table 7.4 and the cards: give a fact, an example from Kerala, and a reason.
- Rebuttal: 1 minute each to answer the other side's points politely.
- Closing: 1 minute each. Then the audience asks questions.
- Conclusion by the chairperson, using the textbook line: both have merits and limits; the best path is scientific, judicious use – organic manure for soil health together with the measured amount of chemical fertiliser that a soil test shows is needed.
7. Physical properties and uses of nitrogen
Physical properties
- A colourless, odourless gas
- Very slightly soluble in water
- Difficult to liquefy ദ്രവീകരിക്കാൻ പ്രയാസമാണ്. (it becomes liquid only at about −196 °C).
Uses
For the industrial manufacture of ammonia N₂ + 3H₂ → 2NH₃ (go further).
For making nitrogenous fertilisers such as urea and ammonium sulphate
Liquefied nitrogen is used as a refrigerant (coolant) ശീതീകാരി – for example to store blood, cells and seeds.
Nitrogen is inert, so it does not react with the rubber or the wheel
Chips packets are filled with nitrogen to keep oxygen out, so the oil in the food does not go stale
Think. Which property of nitrogen is used in each of the last two uses?
- "Nitrogen is inert because it is light" ✗ – the reason is the strong triple bond N≡N.
- Writing N₂ + O₂ → NO ✗ – it does not balance. The product is 2NO.
- "Plants take nitrogen gas from the air through their leaves" ✗ – plants absorb nitrogen as nitrates and other compounds from the soil.
- Saying nitrogen supports combustion ✗ – oxygen does; nitrogen controls the rate of burning.

- Nitrogen is about 78 % of air, present in all living things, and essential for plant growth. It is inert at ordinary conditions because of the strong triple bond in N≡N.
- Oxygen supports combustion; nitrogen dilutes it and controls the rate of burning.
- Lightning: N₂ + O₂ → 2NO; 2NO + O₂ → 2NO₂; 4NO₂ + 2H₂O + O₂ → 4HNO₃ → nitrates in the soil.
- Nitrogen fixation നൈട്രജൻ സ്ഥിരീകരണം: Rhizobium bacteria in the root nodules of pulse plants turn N₂ into compounds plants can absorb.
- Organic manure and chemical fertilisers both have merits and limitations (Table 7.4); use fertilisers scientifically and judiciously.
- Nitrogen is colourless, odourless, very slightly soluble and hard to liquefy. Uses: ammonia, fertilisers, liquid nitrogen coolant, tyres, food packets.
