Oxygen, Ozone and the Ozone Layer
Hospitals keep it in tall cylinders, rockets carry it in huge tanks, and every fire needs it. Oxygen is the "life gas" പ്രാണവായു. High above the clouds, three oxygen atoms join to form ozone, a thin shield that stops most of the Sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. On this page you make oxygen in a virtual teacher demo, test it with a glowing splinter, write its reactions, and then fly up to the stratosphere to watch the ozone cycle – and what CFCs do to it.
- Test for oxygen: a glowing splinter bursts into flame; test for hydrogen: a burning splinter gives a "pop" sound പോപ്പ് ശബ്ദം (page 2).
- Electrolysis of water ജലത്തിന്റെ വൈദ്യുതവിശ്ലേഷണം gives hydrogen and oxygen (page 3).
- Oxygen: atomic number 8, configuration 2,6; it forms the diatomic molecule O₂ with a double bond (page 1).
1. Oxygen – the life gas
Oxygen is the most abundant element in the Earth's crust. It is the gas absolutely necessary for life, known as prāṇavāyu, the "life gas". Oxygen is found in air, water, minerals and living things, either in the free state സ്വതന്ത്രാവസ്ഥ (O₂ in air, dissolved O₂ in water) or in the combined state സംയുക്താവസ്ഥ (in water H₂O, in sand SiO₂, in limestone CaCO₃, in sugar and proteins).

Oxygen gas was discovered in 1774 by the scientist Joseph Priestley (1733–1804). But the name "oxygen" was given by the French scientist Lavoisier. It comes from the Greek word oxygenes, meaning "acid producer".

Only a little oxygen dissolves in water (about 8–9 mg in a litre of water at room temperature), but that is enough for fish and other water animals to breathe through their gills. Warm or polluted water holds even less, which is why fish die in a stagnant, dirty pond.
4. Oxygen in industry – electrolysis of water
Industrially, oxygen is made by the electrolysis of water ജലത്തിന്റെ വൈദ്യുതവിശ്ലേഷണം.
Pure water hardly conducts electricity, so a little acid or salt is added in practice. The equation tells you why the volumes are 2 : 1 – two molecules of H₂ for every molecule of O₂.

Oxygen reacts with metals ലോഹങ്ങൾ and with non-metals അലോഹങ്ങൾ to form their oxides. With non-metals such as carbon and hydrogen it forms carbon dioxide and water respectively.

Why do metals lose their shine?
Have you noticed that metals slowly lose their shine when oxygen acts on them? A new copper kindi or a freshly scrubbed aluminium vessel shines, but in a few weeks it looks dull. Slide time forward.
Q (page 146). Why do metals lose their shine over time?
6. Uses of oxygen
Nothing burns without oxygen: in kitchens, engines and power stations.
Liquid oxygen is the oxidiser in rocket fuels റോക്കറ്റ് ഇന്ധനങ്ങളിൽ ഓക്സീകാരിയായി – there is no air in space.
Hospital oxygen for patients who cannot breathe well കൃത്രിമ ശ്വസനത്തിന്; also for divers and mountaineers.
The very hot oxy-acetylene flame cuts and welds metals
7. Ozone (O₃)
Oxygen is a diatomic molecule ദ്വയാറ്റോമിക തന്മാത്ര, O₂. Ozone is a molecule made of three oxygen atoms, O₃. Most of the ozone is in the stratosphere, the layer of the atmosphere about 15–35 km above the ground.
Oxygen in the upper atmosphere absorbs high-energy ultraviolet radiations അൾട്രാവയലറ്റ് വികിരണങ്ങൾ and splits up. The oxygen atoms formed combine with oxygen molecules to become ozone molecules:
This takes place in the following steps:
Ozone absorbs lower-energy UV radiation and changes back into oxygen (O₃ → O₂ + O). Because of this cycle, the amount of ozone in the atmosphere stays steady. Since the cycle uses up the Sun's UV radiation for its energy, these deadly rays do not reach the Earth in large amounts. Ozone is also a greenhouse gas
A model with a few dozen molecules standing for billions. Real CFCs take years to reach the stratosphere, and one chlorine atom can destroy many thousands of ozone molecules before it is removed.
Depletion of the ozone layer
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) ക്ലോറോഫ്ലൂറോകാർബണുകൾ cause the depletion of the ozone layer ഓസോൺ പാളിയുടെ ശോഷണം. CFCs released into the air reach the stratosphere and break up, giving chlorine. The chlorine splits ozone molecules and turns them into oxygen. This upsets the balance of the ozone–oxygen cycle. Less ozone means less UV is absorbed – so more harmful UV reaches the ground (sunburn, skin cancer, eye cataracts, damage to crops and plankton).
The chlorine atom comes out again at the end, ready to attack another ozone molecule. It is a catalyst: it is not used up. Adding the two steps gives O₃ + O → 2O₂.
- CFCs are a group of compounds containing chlorine, fluorine and carbon atoms.
- They are easily liquefied by pressure. Liquid CFCs cool their surroundings well when they evaporate, so they were used in refrigerators, ACs and similar devices.
- When these devices are thrown away carelessly, the CFC escapes into the air. CFCs cause the depletion of the ozone layer.
- Compounds without chlorine are now used instead: hydrofluorocarbons (HFC), liquefied hydrocarbons, liquid ammonia and solid carbon dioxide.
- September 16 is observed as International Ozone Day.
8. Note and seminar (page 147)
Activity 1. Prepare a note on the role of plants in keeping the amount of oxygen in the air steady, and present it in class.
Every living thing uses oxygen for respiration, and fuels use oxygen when they burn. Yet the oxygen in air stays at about 21 %. The main reason is photosynthesis. Green plants (and the tiny algae and plankton in the sea) take in carbon dioxide and water and, using sunlight and chlorophyll, make glucose and give out oxygen: 6CO₂ + 6H₂O sunlight, chlorophyll⟶ C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ So plants put back the oxygen that respiration and burning remove, and at the same time take away carbon dioxide. Forests, mangroves, paddy fields and even home gardens help. Cutting forests and filling up wetlands reduce this natural supply. What we can do: plant and protect trees (a tree on every school campus and birthday), save the mangroves, and burn less fuel.
Activity 2. Organise a seminar on "Ozone depletion and remedies".
- Introduction – what ozone is (O₃), where it is (stratosphere), and why it is called Earth's sunscreen.
- The ozone–oxygen cycle – O₂ → 2O, O₂ + O → O₃, ozone absorbs UV and changes back; the amount stays steady (use the lab above).
- Causes of depletion – CFCs from old refrigerators, ACs and some aerosol sprays release chlorine in the stratosphere.
- Effects – more UV at the ground: sunburn, skin cancer, cataracts, weaker immunity, harm to crops and sea life.
- Remedies – use CFC-free (HFC, hydrocarbon or ammonia) refrigerators and ACs; dispose of old appliances through authorised dealers so the gas is recovered; avoid CFC sprays; spread awareness on Ozone Day, 16 September. Countries agreed in the Montreal Protocol (1987) to phase out CFCs, and the ozone layer is slowly healing.
- Conclusion and questions from the audience.
- Leaving out O₂ in the KMnO₄ equation or writing just "O" ✗ – oxygen gas is O₂.
- Using a burning splinter "pop" to test oxygen ✗ – that is the hydrogen test. Oxygen makes a glowing splinter burst into flame.
- "Oxygen burns" ✗ – oxygen does not burn; it helps other things burn (Table 7.5).
- "Ozone in the stratosphere is harmful" ✗ – up there it protects us by absorbing UV. The problem is the CFCs that destroy it.
