Chlorine, Bleaching and the Chloride Test
After the floods, health workers pour bleaching powder ബ്ലീച്ചിങ് പൗഡർ into Kerala's wells, and the water tank of your school is often treated the same way. That sharp "swimming-pool" smell is chlorine. On this page you place chlorine in the periodic table, watch a virtual teacher demo of how it is made (Fig 7.10), find out why only a moist cloth is bleached, see how bleaching powder is made, and test a salt for chloride with silver nitrate.
- Chlorine irritates the eyes, nose, throat and lungs. Breathing it can be very dangerous.
- Its preparation (KMnO₄ + concentrated HCl) is done only by the teacher, in a fume cupboard. Concentrated hydrochloric and sulphuric acids burn the skin. On this page you watch a virtual demo only.
- Never mix bleaching powder or household bleach with acids or toilet cleaners at home: they give off chlorine.
1. The smell of bleaching powder
You know the smell of bleaching powder ബ്ലീച്ചിങ് പൗഡർ, Ca(OCl)₂. The smell is due to the chlorine in it. Chlorine is very reactive, so it is not found in the free state സ്വതന്ത്രാവസ്ഥ in nature. It is found only in the combined state സംയുക്താവസ്ഥ, for example as sodium chloride (common salt) in sea water and rock salt.
2. Chlorine in the periodic table (Table 7.6)
Use the periodic table to complete the table about chlorine. First explore the atom below.
📝 Table 7.6. Type your answers, then press Check.
The periodic table gives chlorine's atomic mass as about 35.5. Natural chlorine is a mixture of two isotopes ഐസോടോപ്പുകൾ: about three-quarters is chlorine-35 (18 neutrons) and one-quarter is chlorine-37 (20 neutrons). Their average is 35.5. For Table 7.6 take the common isotope: mass number 35, so neutrons = 35 − 17 = 18.
3. Preparing chlorine – a virtual teacher demo (Fig 7.10)
Look at the balanced equation for making chlorine in the laboratory. Potassium permanganate reacts with concentrated hydrochloric acid:
Study the apparatus in Fig 7.10 and answer the questions below.
Coloured dots are a model of the gas particles, not to scale: green pairs = Cl₂, red-grey = HCl vapour, blue = water vapour.
Q (page 148). Which chemicals are needed to make chlorine in the laboratory?
Q (page 148). Which products are formed?
Q (page 149). The chlorine is passed through water and then through sulphuric acid before it is collected in the jar. What could be the reason?
- Water: a little hydrogen chloride vapour comes out with the chlorine (from the concentrated HCl). HCl dissolves in the water, so the water removes it.
- Concentrated sulphuric acid: the gas also carries water vapour (from the reaction and from the water bottle). Concentrated H₂SO₄ absorbs water vapour, so it dries the chlorine.
4. Physical properties of chlorine
🟢🟡 Colour
Greenish-yellow പച്ചകലർന്ന മഞ്ഞനിറം. The name comes from the Greek chloros, "pale green".
👃 Smell
Pungent, choking smell രൂക്ഷഗന്ധം. You notice it faintly near bleaching powder or a chlorinated pool. Never sniff the gas directly.
⚖️ Density
Denser than air വായുവിനെക്കാൾ സാന്ദ്രത കൂടുതൽ, about 2.5 times. So it collects at the bottom of an upright jar and stays low near the ground.
Quick check. Choose the right word.
5. The bleaching action of chlorine
Activity (page 149). Take two jars filled with chlorine gas. Cut a coloured cloth into two pieces. Put the dry piece in one jar and the moist piece in the other. (Teacher demo: the jars of chlorine come from the fume cupboard.) Move the slider to let time pass.
Q (page 149). What happens to the colour of the cloth in each jar?
Analyse the equations given below.
HOCl → HCl + [O]
Water reacts with chlorine to give hydrochloric acid and hypochlorous acid ഹൈപ്പോക്ലോറസ് ആസിഡ് (HOCl). Hypochlorous acid is unstable, so it breaks up into hydrochloric acid and nascent oxygen നവജാത ഓക്സിജൻ, written [O]. Nascent oxygen is a powerful oxidising agent: it changes coloured substances into colourless substances. Dry chlorine forms no HOCl, so it cannot bleach.
6. Making bleaching powder
You know that bleaching powder is used to purify water. How is it made?
Bleaching powder, Ca(OCl)₂, is made by passing dry chlorine gas through dry slaked lime (calcium hydroxide powder, kummayam):
After the 2018 floods, wells all over Kerala were "super-chlorinated" with bleaching powder before people drank the water again. Health workers mix a measured amount in a bucket of water, let it settle and pour the clear liquid into the well. In the well water the chlorine kills disease germs (it is a disinfectant അണുനാശിനി), and the water can be used after the strong smell has faded. Overhead water tanks in schools and the water from treatment plants are also chlorinated.
Ca(OCl)₂ is calcium hypochlorite. Look at the equation: calcium chloride forms alongside it, so the powder sold in shops is a mixture of calcium hypochlorite, calcium chloride and some unreacted lime. The OCl group (hypochlorite) gives hypochlorous acid in water. That is why bleaching powder bleaches and disinfects just like moist chlorine.
7. Uses of chlorine
🧺 Bleaching
To bleach cotton, linen and wood pulp for paper.
🧴 Antiseptics and pesticides
To make antiseptics and pesticides കീടനാശിനി.
💧 Disinfectant
As a disinfectant അണുനാശിനി: drinking water, swimming pools, wells and water tanks.
8. Testing for chloride salts
Take 2 mL of sodium chloride solution in a test tube. Add two or three drops of silver nitrate (AgNO₃) solution. What do you observe? Then add ammonium hydroxide (NH₄OH) solution to the precipitate. The book says: repeat with different chloride solutions. Try a salt that is not a chloride too.
Q (page 150). Add ammonium hydroxide (NH₄OH) solution to the thick (curdy) white precipitate of silver chloride. What happens to the precipitate?
This is how chloride salts are identified: white precipitate with AgNO₃ that dissolves in NH₄OH → the salt is a chloride.
|---|---|---|
| Add 2–3 drops of AgNO₃ solution to the salt solution | curdy white precipitate | may be a chloride (AgCl formed) |
| Add NH₄OH solution to the precipitate | the precipitate dissolves | the salt is a chloride |
Compare with the carbonate test of Table 7.3 (page 6): there the second reagent is dilute HCl.

10. Check yourself
- Chlorine is very reactive, so it is not found free in nature. Z = 17, configuration 2,8,7, mass number 35, 18 neutrons, valency 1, family: halogens (group 17).
- Laboratory preparation (teacher, fume cupboard): 2KMnO₄ + 16HCl → 2KCl + 2MnCl₂ + 8H₂O + 5Cl₂. Water removes HCl vapour; concentrated H₂SO₄ removes water vapour; the gas is collected by upward displacement of air.
- Chlorine is a greenish-yellow gas with a pungent smell, denser than air, and poisonous.
- Only moist chlorine bleaches: H₂O + Cl₂ → HCl + HOCl; HOCl → HCl + [O]. Nascent oxygen നവജാത ഓക്സിജൻ oxidises coloured substances to colourless ones.
- Bleaching powder: 2Ca(OH)₂ + 2Cl₂ → Ca(OCl)₂ + CaCl₂ + 2H₂O (dry chlorine through dry slaked lime). Uses of chlorine: bleaching, antiseptics and pesticides, disinfectant.
- Chloride test: AgNO₃ gives a curdy white precipitate of AgCl, which dissolves in NH₄OH.
