Dividing a Triangle & the Midpoint Theorem
Draw a line inside a triangle parallel to one of its sides. The other two sides are cut in the same ratio – and if the cut is at the midpoints, the line is half the third side. These two facts, both coming from "parallels cut lines in the same ratio", are used again and again in the rest of the chapter and in Chapter 6.
- Three or more parallel lines cut any two lines in the same ratio (Key idea 4, page 6).
- Alternate angles between parallel lines are equal; two triangles with two equal angles and the included side equal are congruent (ASA,
- A quadrilateral whose opposite sides are parallel is a parallelogram (സാമാന്തരികം); "a/b = p/q" also means a/(a + b) = p/(p + q).
1. A line parallel to one side of a triangle
Only one parallel line is drawn inside the triangle – but a third one is hiding at the apex. Add it, and Key idea 4 does the rest.
In any triangle, a line drawn parallel to one side cuts the other two sides in the same ratio.
2. The textbook example: 6 cm, 4.5 cm, 7 cm (page 47)
A line parallel to one side cuts the other two sides into the same fractions of themselves. If the left side a is cut into p (top) and q (bottom) and the right side b into r and s:
pa = rb and qa = sb"Same ratio" (p : q = r : s) and "same fractions" (p/a = r/b) say the same thing in two ways; the fraction form is the quicker one for calculations.
3. Play: drag the triangle, slide the parallel
Drag the orange corners into any shape. The line DE stays parallel to BC; AD/DB and AE/EC change together and are always equal, and AD/AB = AE/AC is the slider value.
4. The other way round: same ratio ⇒ parallel (page 49)
In any triangle, a line that divides two sides in the same ratio is parallel to the third side.
With the shift at 0 both points cut their sides in the same fraction and the joining line is exactly parallel to the base (angle 0°). Move the shift slider and the line tilts – the ratio and the parallelism go together.
5. The special case of midpoints
Take the ratio to be 1 : 1. "Same ratio" now means "midpoint on both sides".
The line through the midpoint of one side, parallel to a second side, meets the third side at its midpoint. Conversely, the line joining the midpoints of two sides is parallel to the third side.
6. Join all three midpoints: four congruent triangles (page 52)
The line joining the midpoints of two sides of a triangle is parallel to the third side and half as long.
D and E are the midpoints of CA and CB. However you drag A, B and C, DE stays parallel to AB and exactly half of it.
A line parallel to a side cuts off a small triangle at the apex. Its two sides along the big triangle are the same fraction of the big sides (Key idea 6). For midpoints that fraction is ½, and we have just seen the third side is ½ too. If the cut is at ⅓ of each side, the third side of the small triangle turns out to be ⅓ as well – a line parallel to a side always cuts off a triangle whose three sides are the same fraction of the big triangle's sides. You will prove this for every fraction in Chapter 6 (similar triangles).
7. Quarter after quarter കാൽക്കണക്ക് (page 53)
Each of the four small triangles is ¼ of the big one. Keep the three outer ones (¾ of the area) and split the middle one again, and again…
The coloured area is 3(¼ + 1/16 + 1/64 + …) and it creeps up to the whole triangle, 1. So ¼ + 1/16 + 1/64 + … itself creeps up to ⅓.
Roof trusses and bridge girders are triangles braced by rods joining the midpoints of their sides: the rods are automatically parallel to the outer bars and half as long, so one standard rod length fits everywhere. A kite is made rigid by a cross-bar joining the midpoints of two spars. Fold a triangular paper napkin so that two corners meet the third: the fold line is the midline. Surveyors use "parallel cuts" of a triangular plot to split it in a given ratio without measuring the far side.
8. Check yourself
- A line parallel to one side of a triangle cuts the other two sides in the same ratio, i.e. into the same fractions (add the parallel through the apex and use Key idea 4).
- Conversely, a line cutting two sides in the same ratio is parallel to the third side.
- Midpoint theorem: the line joining the midpoints of two sides is parallel to the third side and half of it; the four triangles made by the three midlines are congruent (ASA with alternate angles).
- Through the midpoint of one side, parallel to a second side, you reach the midpoint of the third.
- ¼ + 1/16 + 1/64 + … → ⅓, because 3 × (that sum) fills the whole triangle.
