Light Changes Direction
On a hot afternoon the road ahead looks wet. A straw in a glass of lime juice looks broken. Both tricks are played by light as it travels from one medium മാധ്യമം into another. On this page you shine a (virtual) laser into a tank of smoky air and milky water, watch a toy car swerve, and find out why light changes direction: its speed changes.
1. Water on the road? A broken straw? (page 7)
The chapter opens inside a car on a summer afternoon.
Haven't you seen this too – on the NH on a hot day, the road far ahead shines like a pool, but the "water" keeps moving away as you drive closer? That is a mirage മരീചിക; you will understand it fully on page 11. Many such experiences are linked to the behaviour of light.
Q (Fig 1.1). – Have you noticed that a straw in a glass of lime juice looks broken? What could be the reason?
2. Activity: a laser through smoke and milky water – Fig 1.2, 1.3
Fill a glass tank about three-quarters with water and add one or two drops of milk. Cover the tank with a transparent sheet of paper and fill the rest with incense smoke. Shine a laser torch slantwise into it as in Fig 1.2 (a) and observe the path of light പ്രകാശപാത. The smoke and the milk scatter a little of the light sideways – that is the only reason you can see the beam.
Light the agarbatti only with an adult present, keep it away from paper and curtains, and put it out in water afterwards.
The dashed grey line is the normal ലംബം – the line perpendicular to the water surface at the point where the ray strikes it. The faint dashed red line shows where the ray would have gone if it had not changed direction. (The drawing uses the real refractive index of water, 1.33.)
Observe and answer (page 8)
Q1. – Through which media does the ray of light travel inside the tank?
Q2. – What is the direction of the path of light while it travels within one medium only?
Q3. – When light enters the second medium obliquely (slantwise) from the first, does the ray change direction?
Q4. – Where does the ray change direction?
Q5 (Fig 1.3). – Will a ray falling perpendicularly change direction? Shine the laser perpendicularly onto the water surface. Did the ray change direction here?
📒 Science diary – Fig 1.2 (b) and Fig 1.3 (b)
Draw two line diagrams of the path of light: a horizontal line for the water surface, label air വായു above and water ജലം below, a dashed normal at the point where the ray strikes. (b) of Fig 1.2: a slanting ray in air that bends at the surface and continues, straight again, in the water, closer to the normal. (b) of Fig 1.3: a vertical ray that goes straight through. Put arrows on the rays to show the direction of travel.
Light travels in a straight line within one medium. When a ray passes obliquely from one medium into another, its direction changes at the interface between the media. A ray falling perpendicularly on the interface does not change direction.
3. Why does the path bend? The toy car – Fig 1.4
– Why does the path of light change direction when light passes obliquely into another medium? The textbook answers with an everyday model.
– Watch the speed and direction of a toy car that rolls from a smooth surface മിനുസമുള്ള പ്രതലം onto a rough surface പരുപരുത്ത പ്രതലം.
Watch the two front wheels. The wheel that reaches the rough mat first slows down first, while the other wheel is still running fast on the smooth floor – so the car swings round until both wheels are on the mat. Set the speed on the mat to 100 % (no slowing) or the angle to 0° and the car does not turn.
Q6. – Does the car's direction of motion change?
Q7. – Where does this change happen?
Q8. – Did the car move at the same speed on the smooth and the rough surface?
Light is the same: the speed of light പ്രകാശവേഗം is different in different media, and this change in speed is what changes the direction of the path of light when it passes from one medium into another. A beam of light has a width, like the car's axle: the side of the beam that enters the water first slows down first, and the beam swings round.
4. How fast is light in different media? – Table 1.1
| Medium മാധ്യമം | Speed of light (approx.) പ്രകാശവേഗം (ഏകദേശം) |
|---|---|
| Air വായു | 3 × 10⁸ m/s |
| Water ജലം | 2.25 × 10⁸ m/s |
| Glass ഗ്ലാസ് | 2 × 10⁸ m/s |
| Diamond വജ്രം | 1.25 × 10⁸ m/s |
1 ns (nanosecond) = 10⁻⁹ s, one billionth of a second. In 1 ns light covers 30 cm in air – and less in the other media. The full lane length is the distance covered in air in 2 ns (60 cm), so each bar is also the speed bar of Table 1.1.
The speed of light differs from medium to medium because the media differ in optical density പ്രകാശികസാന്ദ്രത.
The ability of a medium to affect the speed of light through it is called the optical density of the medium.
light travels slower in it. Example: glass compared with water.
light travels faster in it. Example: air compared with water.
Kerosene floats on water, so it has a smaller mass density (about 0.8 g/cm³ against 1 g/cm³). Yet light is slower in kerosene (refractive index 1.44) than in water (1.33) – kerosene is optically denser. "Heavier" and "optically denser" are two different ideas.
Arrange in increasing optical density (page 10)
Arrange the media of Table 1.1 in order of increasing optical density.
Next time you are served naranga vellam (lime juice) at a wayside shop, look at the straw from the side: broken! Look at a coconut-shell spoon in a pot of water, or your legs while standing in a temple pond – they look shorter and bent. All of these are light changing direction at a water–air interface. And the shimmering "water" on the hot NH road in April is the same light playing a bigger trick (page 11).
5. Check yourself
- Within one medium light travels in a straight line.
- Entering another medium obliquely, a ray changes direction at the interface വിഭജനതലം; a ray falling perpendicularly does not.
- Cause: the speed of light is different in different media (toy car: speed changes → direction changes).
- Table 1.1: air 3 × 10⁸, water 2.25 × 10⁸, glass 2 × 10⁸, diamond 1.25 × 10⁸ m/s.
- Optical density: the ability of a medium to affect the speed of light. Denser → slower. Order: air < water < glass < diamond. Not the same as mass density.
