Refraction of Light പ്രകാശത്തിന്റെ അപവർത്തനം

On a hot summer afternoon, a girl in the car shouts, “Look, water on the road! Drive carefully, Amma!” Her mother smiles: “It is summer – that isn't water. You'll see when we get there.” The textbook opens with this puzzle, and with a straw that looks broken in a glass of lime juice. By the end of this chapter you will explain both, and much more. You will see why light changes direction when it passes from one material into another (refraction), what the refractive index of a material tells you, why stars twinkle, why a pond looks shallower than it is, and how light can be trapped inside a glass thread and carried for kilometres (total internal reflection, the idea behind the internet cables of KFON). This interactive, animated self-study guide starts from the basics – rays, angles, speed and powers of ten. It explains every idea with Kerala examples, answers every textbook question, and ends with a revision sheet and a model test.

The chapter in one picture

🔦 A laser ray bends into water · light trapped in a glass fibre

Left: a laser ray (പ്രകാശരശ്മി) travels in a straight line through the air. Where it meets the water surface – the interface (വിഭജനതലം) – it changes direction. This is refraction (അപവർത്തനം). The dashed line is the normal (ലംബം), drawn at right angles to the surface. The ray bends towards the normal as it goes into water, so the angle in the water (r) is smaller than the angle in the air (i). Watch what happens when the ray falls straight down along the normal: it does not bend at all. Right: light enters one end of a thin glass fibre and strikes its wall at a large angle (60°). That is more than the critical angle (ക്രിട്ടിക്കൽ കോൺ) of glass, about 42°, so none of it escapes: it is reflected completely, again and again. This is total internal reflection (പൂർണ്ണാന്തര പ്രതിപതനം). The light comes out only at the far end. You will learn all of this on pages 5–11.

⚠ Never shine a laser torch into anyone's eyes (or at a mirror towards a face); an adult should handle the laser.

How to use this guide

🎬 Watch the animations

Rays bend at water surfaces, stars twinkle and light zig-zags along fibres, one step at a time. Press Next ▶ or ▶▶ Auto play.

🧪 Do the virtual experiments

Move the sliders to change an angle, a material or a depth. The rays are drawn exactly as real light would travel, and the angles are read out live – like doing the textbook activity with a laser, but safely.

✍️ Try before you see

Every numerical is laid out the exam way: Given → Formula → Substitution → Answer. Use 💡 Show a hint first and work in your notebook. Then open ✅ Show final answer.

📖 Textbook words

Purple മലയാളം words are the exact terms used in your textbook (pages 7–26), so you can match this guide with your book and write answers in either language.

Learning path

Follow the pages in order. If you are already confident with rays and reflection, measuring angles with a protractor, speed and powers of ten, and the shapes of glass slabs and prisms, you can skim pages 1–4. Still try their quizzes, because the chapter uses these skills on every page.
