Distance and Displacement

A child walks between the electric posts along a road, a girl goes round the school garden at interval time. How far did each of them travel? And how far – and in which direction – did each of them really get from where they started? These two answers have two different names: distance and displacement. This page is the foundation for everything else in the chapter.

📖 What you need (pages 1 and 2 of this guide)

1. Can we time a train on a bridge? (page 27)

The chapter opens with a train on a long bridge. A child and her grandfather are watching it.

The child: Can we calculate the time this train takes to cross the bridge completely?
Grandfather: It can be calculated exactly. But for that you need to understand some features of motion.

We will answer it on the next page (it takes 50 s – and you will see why the length of the train itself matters). First, the features of motion: distance and displacement.

2. The electric posts – Fig 2.1

A, B, C, D – A, B, C and D are four electric posts along a road; neighbouring posts are 40 m apart. East is to the right.

– A child starts at the foot of post B, walks past C to D, then turns back and stops near post C.

🧪 Posts lab – walk the child and watch the two counters

The orange trail is every metre walked – its total length is the distance travelled. The green arrow always runs straight from the start B to where the child is now – that is the displacement. Try: walk east, then west, then west again. Does the green arrow ever get longer than the orange trail?

Textbook questions (page 27)

Q1. – What is the total distance the child travelled (B → D → C)?

B → C 40 m, C → D 40 m, D → C 40 m: total distance = 40 + 40 + 40 = 120 m.
Why: distance counts every metre walked, including the walk back from D to C.

Q2. – How far apart are the child's initial position B and present position C?

40 m.
Why: only the start (B) and the end (C) matter here, not the path in between. B and C are neighbouring posts.

Q3. – If the child travels 40 m from B (in a straight line along the road), where could the child be?

At A (40 m west) or at C (40 m east).
Why: "40 m" alone does not fix the position – you also need the direction. Try both buttons in the lab.

Q4. (കിഴക്ക് / പടിഞ്ഞാറ്) – In which direction must the child travel 40 m from B to reach C? (east / west)

East. So the child's change of position is "40 m east, from B to C".
Why: C is to the east (right) of B. A size (40 m) together with a direction (east) tells us exactly where the child ended up – this is the displacement.

3. Displacement സ്ഥാനാന്തരം – a distance with a direction

The gap between the initial position ആദ്യസ്ഥാനം B and the final position അന്ത്യസ്ഥാനം C measures how much the child's position changed. Together with the direction, it is called the displacement.

⭐ Displacement (textbook page 28)

Displacement is the straight-line distance between two positions, stated with a definite direction. Its symbol is s; its unit is the same as that of distance – the metre (m).

Vector and scalar quantities

Vector quantity
has a magnitude (size) and a direction. Example: "40 m east".
Scalar quantity
has only a magnitude; no direction is needed. Example: "a mass of 5 kg", "10 s".

Q5. – So, is displacement a vector or a scalar?

Displacement is a vector quantity. (Distance is a scalar.)
Why: "40 m" is not enough to say where the child is (it could be A or C) – the direction must be stated, so displacement has both size and direction.
🧩 Sorter – vector or scalar?

Ask yourself: does the answer still make full sense without a direction? Then it is a scalar.

Positive and negative directions

Q6. – If the child walks 40 m west from B, the child is now at ……… .

At post A. Taking east as positive, the displacement is −40 m (40 m west, B → A).
Why: A is the post just west (left) of B. West is the opposite of the direction we chose as positive, so the displacement gets a minus sign.

If displacement forward / to the east is taken as positive, displacement backward / to the west is negative. (You may choose the other way round.) But once you have chosen, you must not change it in the middle of a problem.

🧭 Our rule for this whole guide

East / forward / up = +; west / backward / down = −. With B as the zero, the posts sit at A = −40 m, B = 0, C = +40 m, D = +80 m. Displacement = final position − initial position.

4. Table 2.1 – distance and displacement on each trip

– Complete the table based on the child's trips. Step through: each trip is drawn, and its row fills in.

🎬 Five trips from post B
Stage of the path

– The child goes from A to D and comes back to A. What is the distance travelled? The displacement? Aren't the initial and final positions the same here?

A → D is 3 × 40 = 120 m, and back again 120 m: distance = 240 m. Displacement = zero.
Why: yes – the child starts and ends at the same post A, so there is no change of position at all, however far the walk was.

From the table: the size of the displacement can be equal to, less than, or zero compared with the distance travelled – but never more than the distance (a straight line is the shortest path between two points).

Q8. – Write situations in which the distance travelled and the displacement are equal (in size).

Whenever something moves along a straight line in one direction without turning back: a KSRTC bus on a straight stretch of road that does not turn back; a stone dropped straight down from a height; a sprinter running the 100 m race; a lift going straight up from the ground floor to the third floor; the child walking straight from B to D.
Why: if the path is straight and never reverses, the path itself is the straight line from start to end, so the two lengths are the same.

5. Two paths from P – Fig 2.2

– Two different paths of a child who starts at P and goes via Q. In (a) the child turns at Q (PQ = 60 m, QR = 40 m, PR = 80 m); in (b) the child goes straight on from P through Q to S (60 m + 40 m).

🧪 Same 100 m walked – two different displacements

– In Fig 2.2(a), what is the distance travelled? The displacement?

Distance = 60 + 40 = 100 m; displacement = 80 m, from P to R.
Why: the displacement is the straight line PR joining the start and the end, not the bent path P → Q → R.

– In Fig 2.2(b)?

Distance = 60 + 40 = 100 m; displacement = 100 m, from P to S.
Why: P, Q and S are on one straight line and the child never turns back, so the straight line PS is exactly the path walked.

– In which case are the size of the displacement and the distance equal?

In Fig 2.2(b) – the straight path in one direction.
Why: in (a) the path turns at Q, so the straight line PR (80 m) is shorter than the path (100 m).
⭐ When are they equal? (textbook page 29)

The magnitude of the displacement equals the distance travelled only when an object moves along a straight path in one direction.

6. Table 2.2 – distance vs displacement

– Record the differences between distance and displacement. First sort these statements yourself.

7. Round the school garden – Fig 2.3 and Table 2.3

– During the interval a child goes from class 9B to the staff room, then to the statue of the Father of the Nation (Mahatma Gandhi) in the school garden, and then back to the class via the school office.

From the corridor in front of 9B: the staff room front is 15 m east, the office front 15 m west; the statue is 60 m south of 9B (straight line). The curved garden path from the staff room to the statue is 70 m; the curved path from the statue to the office is 80 m.

🧪 Interval walk – odometer and displacement arrow

Drawing not to scale (like Fig 2.3: the 15 m corridor is drawn long so you can see it). The numbers in the readout are the real ones in metres.

Child's path കുട്ടിയുടെ സഞ്ചാരപാതDistance (m)Displacement (m)
9B → in front of the staff room??
9B → via the staff room → near the statue??
back in 9B (via the statue and the office)??

The table fills in as the child reaches each place. Answers with reasons:

Row 1: distance 15 m, displacement 15 m east.
Row 2: distance 15 + 70 = 85 m, displacement 60 m south (straight from 9B to the statue).
Row 3: distance 15 + 70 + 80 + 15 = 180 m, displacement 0.
Why: the displacement only looks at where the child started (9B) and where she is now. The curved paths add to the distance but not to the displacement; back in 9B, the start and end are the same point.
🌴 Kerala connection

Along a village road in Kerala the KSEB electric posts are a handy ruler – they are roughly 30–40 m apart. A milk vendor who cycles from the junction to the last house and back has covered several kilometres of distance every morning, but by the time he is home again his displacement is zero. An autorickshaw meter charges you for the distance, not the displacement – that is why a round trip is not free!
