Speed and Velocity

How fast is something moving? Divide by time – but divide what? Divide the distance and you get the speed; divide the displacement and you get the velocity. On this page you watch both numbers grow as a child walks, find out why they can differ, and finally answer the opening question: how long does the train take to cross the bridge?

📖 What you need (page 5 and pages 2, 4 of this guide)

1. A walk from P to R – Fig 2.4

– A child starts at P and reaches R via Q in 18 s: P → Q is 40 m (8 s), Q → R is 50 m (10 s). The straight line PR is 72 m.

🧪 Speedometer vs "velocity-meter"

Speed so far = distance ÷ time; velocity so far = displacement ÷ time (direction: from P towards the child). While the child is still on PQ they are equal. After the turn at Q, the velocity drops below the speed. The child's pace never changed – only the direction did.

Textbook questions (page 30)

Q1. – What total distance did the child travel from P to R via Q?

40 m + 50 m = 90 m.
Why: distance is the whole length of the path walked, both sides of the triangle.

Q2. – What is the child's speed from P to R via Q?

Speed = distance ÷ time = 90 m ÷ 18 s = 5 m/s.
Why: speed വേഗം tells how much path is covered each second: 5 m every second.

Q3. – What is the child's displacement?

72 m, from P to R.
Why: the straight line from the start P to the end R is 72 m long; the bend at Q does not count.

2. Displacement per second = velocity

– The 72 m displacement happened in 18 s, so we can find the displacement in one second:

displacement in one second = displacementtime = 72 m18 s = 4 m/s

– The displacement in one second is the velocity.

Q4. (P → R / R → P / P → Q → R) – What is its direction?

P → R – the same direction as the displacement.
Why: velocity is displacement divided by time; dividing by a time (a plain number of seconds) cannot change the direction.

Filling the blanks on textbook page 31:

velocity (v) = displacementtime ;  that is,  v = st
unit of velocity = unit of displacementunit of time = ms = m/s (metre per second)
⭐ Velocity (textbook page 31)

Velocity is the displacement of an object per unit time. Velocity is a vector; its direction is the direction of the displacement. Its unit is m/s. The displacement does not depend on the path taken, but to find the velocity we must use the whole time the object took to travel (all 18 s here – not just the time "along PR").

3. The train on the bridge – the opening question answered

– A 200 m long train moves with a velocity of 20 m/s. How long does it take to cross a straight bridge 800 m long?

"Crossing completely" starts when the engine (front) reaches the bridge and ends when the last coach (rear) leaves it. Watch the front of the train: it must go along the whole bridge and then a further train-length.

🧪 Train-and-bridge lab

Worked example (textbook pages 31–32). സ്ഥാനാന്തരം = പാലത്തിന്റെ നീളം + ട്രെയിനിന്റെ നീളം – displacement = length of the bridge + length of the train.

Follow one point of the train – the front. From "front at the start of the bridge" to "rear at the end of the bridge", the front moves 800 m + 200 m. Then t = s/v.

🎬 Exam layout, step by step
Answer: s = 800 m + 200 m = 1000 m, v = 20 m/s; t = s/v = 1000 m ÷ 20 m/s = 50 s.

4. Your turn – textbook questions (page 32)

Q5. – Find the child's speed and velocity from P to Q in Fig 2.4. What conclusions can you draw?

Speed = 40 m ÷ 8 s = 5 m/s; velocity = 40 m ÷ 8 s = 5 m/s, from P to Q.
Conclusion: when an object moves along a straight line in one direction, the distance equals the size of the displacement, so the speed equals the magnitude of the velocity. (Over the whole bent path P → Q → R they differ: 5 m/s against 4 m/s.)
Why: on the straight part PQ the path itself is the straight line from P to Q. Set the slider in the lab to 8 s and compare the two meters.

– A vehicle moving in a straight line at 25 m/s covers 400 m. Find the time taken.

t = s/v = 400 m ÷ 25 m/s = 16 s.
Why: in a straight line in one direction the distance equals the displacement, so s = 400 m. Rearrange v = s/t to t = s/v. Full animated solution: page 12.

– What is the displacement in one minute of an object moving with a velocity of 36 m/s?

t = 1 minute = 60 s; s = vt = 36 m/s × 60 s = 2160 m (2.16 km), in the direction of the velocity.
Why: first change the minute into seconds, because the velocity is "per second". Then s = v × t. Full animated solution: page 12.
🌴 Kerala connection

The speedometer of a KSRTC bus shows speed – it has no idea which way the bus is heading. Take a bus from Thrissur to Guruvayur and back: the speedometer showed a healthy number the whole time, but your average velocity for the round trip is zero. Railway engineers use the train-and-bridge idea every day: a long goods train needs its own length added before the line behind a long bridge – like those across the Bharathapuzha or the Periyar – is clear.
