Chapter 6 · Section 4Textbook pages 116–119

Kinetic Energy

A gentle breeze barely moves a leaf, but a cyclone throws roofs off houses. A slowly rolling ball hardly pushes anything, but a fast cricket ball can break a window. Moving things carry energy – kinetic energy. On this page you find, by experiment and then by algebra, exactly how it depends on mass and velocity: Ek = ½mv².

📖 What you need (pages 1, 3, 6 and 7 of this guide)

1. Moving air and moving water do work (Fig 6.7)

– Haven't you seen pictures of huge trees falling in a cyclone, roofs being blown away and buildings destroyed by landslides and floods? – Isn't it because they are moving that wind and water can do work?

🌀 Virtual lab: how strong is the wind?

Each cubic metre of air has a mass of about 1.2 kg (approx.). The readout uses Ek = ½mv² from later on this page – watch how fast the energy grows with speed.

⭐ Key idea (textbook page 116) – Kinetic energy

(Kinetic energy).

Kinetic energy is the energy an object has because of its motion.

🌴 Kerala connection – cyclones, floods and landslides

Kerala has felt the power of moving air and water: Cyclone Ockhi (2017) struck the southern coast, the great floods of 2018 swept away houses and bridges, and landslides such as the one at Mundakkai–Chooralmala in Wayanad (2024) carried huge rocks downhill. In every case it is the kinetic energy of fast-moving air, water, mud and rock that does the damage.

⚠ During a storm stay indoors, keep away from trees, hoardings and electric lines, and follow the disaster-management warnings.

2. Activity – the tin and the block (Fig 6.8)

The textbook's heading: ഗതികോർജത്തെ സ്വാധീനിക്കുന്ന ഘടകങ്ങൾ – factors that affect kinetic energy. – Roll a cylindrical tin down a sloping board so that it hits a wooden block. Note how far the block moves. Then fill the tin with sand and repeat, with the block at the same starting place. Finally release the sand-filled tin from higher up.

🧪 Virtual lab: roll the tin into the block
TrialTinRelease height (cm)Speed at the bottom (m/s)Kinetic energy (J)Block moved (cm)

Model (approx.): the tin reaches the bottom with speed v = √(2gh) (spinning and friction ignored), so its kinetic energy is mgh; about half of that pushes the 500 g block against a steady friction of about 2 N. Do the textbook's three trials: empty tin from 10 cm, sand tin from 10 cm, sand tin from 20 cm.

Textbook questions (page 117)

– (Sand-filled tin) Does the block move farther? What could be the reason?
– Is there any other factor that affects kinetic energy?
– Repeat with the same sand-filled tin released from a greater height. What do you observe?
1. Yes, the block moves farther (in our lab 2.5 cm → 12.5 cm from 10 cm). Why: the tin's mass increased, so at the same speed it carries more kinetic energy and can do more work on the block
2. Yes – its velocity. We can test it by making the tin move faster.
3. The block moves even farther (12.5 cm → 25 cm when the height doubles). Why: from a greater height the tin reaches the bottom with a greater velocity, so it has more kinetic energy

📒 Science diary – two factors that affect kinetic energy

3. Calculating kinetic energy – Ek = ½mv²

The thinking boy asks: ഗതികോർജം കണക്കാക്കാനാകുമോ? – Can kinetic energy be calculated? Idea: push an object that starts at rest with a steady force F through a distance s. The work done on it becomes its kinetic energy.

🎬 Derivation step by step (page 117)
⭐ Key idea (textbook page 117) – formula for kinetic energy

Ek = ½ mv²

With m in kilograms and v in metres per second, Ek is in joules. Only v is squared – not the ½ and not the m.

The textbook's chart puts it all together:

Textbook questions (page 118). പട്ടിക 6.4 അടിസ്ഥാനപ്പെടുത്തി താഴെ കൊടുത്ത സന്ദർഭങ്ങളിൽ ഗതികോർജത്തിൽ എന്ത് മാറ്റമാണ് വരുന്നത് എന്ന് എഴുതുക – Using Table 6.4, write how the kinetic energy changes when:

  1. മാസ് രണ്ട് മടങ്ങായി വർധിക്കുമ്പോൾ – the mass is doubled
  2. പ്രവേഗം മൂന്ന് മടങ്ങായി വർധിക്കുമ്പോൾ – the velocity is tripled
  3. പ്രവേഗം പകുതിയാകുമ്പോൾ – the velocity is halved
(a) KE doubles (5 kg → 10 kg at 2 m/s: 10 J → 20 J). Why: Ek is proportional to m.
(b) KE becomes 9 times (3² = 9). Why: Ek depends on v²; e.g. 10 kg at 1 m/s → 5 J, at 3 m/s → 45 J.
(c) KE becomes ¼ (one quarter), because (½)² = ¼; e.g. 10 kg at 2 m/s → 20 J, at 1 m/s → 5 J.

5. Textbook numericals (pages 118–119)

Q1. – A motorcyclist travels in a straight line at 10 m/s. The motorcycle and rider together have a mass of 300 kg. What is their kinetic energy? What is it if the speed is doubled?

Ek = ½ × m × v². Square only the velocity. For (b), use v = 20 m/s – or remember that doubling v makes Ek four times.

🎬 Solution in exam layout – the motorcycle
Answer: (a) Ek = ½ × 300 × 10² = 15 000 J; (b) Ek = ½ × 300 × 20² = 60 000 J (4 times as much). More: page 11 ▶
🌴 Kerala connection – why speed limits and helmets matter

Riding at 60 km/h instead of 30 km/h doubles the speed but makes the kinetic energy four times as large. In a crash all that energy has to be absorbed by the vehicle, the road – and the rider. That is why speed limits matter so much, and why a good helmet (which crumples to absorb energy) saves lives.

⚠ Always wear a helmet on a two-wheeler, even for short rides, and never ride with more than one pillion.

Q2. – An athlete throws a shot of mass 6 kg with a velocity of 12 m/s. What is its kinetic energy?

12² = 144. Then ½ × 6 × 144.

🎬 Solution in exam layout – the shot put
Answer: Ek = ½ × 6 × 12² = 3 × 144 = 432 J. More: page 11 ▶

– A ball of mass 0.5 kg is held at a certain height above the ground. (g = 9.8 m/s²) If its potential energy is 98 J, at what height is it? If it falls freely, what is its kinetic energy just before it touches the ground?

(a) Rearrange Ep = mgh to h = Ep ÷ (mg). (b) While falling freely, its potential energy turns into kinetic energy.

🎬 Solution in exam layout – the falling ball
Answer: (a) h = 98 ÷ (0.5 × 9.8) = 20 m; (b) Ek = 98 J – all the potential energy has become kinetic energy (air resistance ignored). More: page 11 ▶
