📖 What you need (pages 5–10 of this guide)

1 · Table 6.1 – is work done?

Textbook pp 107–108, Fig 6.1

The pictures show some things we do in daily life. Analyse them and complete Table 6.1.

For each picture ask two questions: (1) did the object move at all? (2) did it move in the direction of the force? Work is done only if both answers are “yes”.

🎬 Solution animation – Fig 6.1 redrawn with force and displacement arrows
Object on which the force actsDisplaced? Displaced in the direction of the force?
(a) loading a sack into a lorrysack
(b) trying to push a big rockrock പാറno ഇല്ലno ഇല്ല
(c) pushing a trolley in a supermarkettrolley
(d) a man standing with a sack on his headsack ചുമട്no ഇല്ലno ഇല്ല
Work was done in (a) loading the sack and (c) pushing the trolley. No work was done in (b) pushing the rock and (d) standing with the sack – a force acts, but the object is not displaced in its direction.
⚠️ Common trap

“The man with the sack is tired, so he is doing work.” His muscles are using energy, but in physics no work is done on the sack: his upward force does not move it. Same for the rock – a big force, zero displacement, zero work.

2 · The two wheelchairs

Textbook p 109, Fig 6.2

An attendant pushes two patients in wheelchairs 10 m along a level corridor at the same speed. Patient 1 needs a force of 40 N and patient 2 a force of 70 N (the heavier patient makes the friction ഘർഷണബലം bigger).

Work = force × displacement. Compare 40 × 10 with 70 × 10 (same displacement, different force), then 70 × 10 with 70 × 20 (same force, different displacement).

🎬 Solution in exam layout – Given → Formula → Substitution → Answer
🧪 Try other numbers – the wheelchair lab
Given: displacement s = 10 m in both; F₁ = 40 N, F₂ = 70 N.
Formula: W = F × s.
Substitution: W₁ = 40 N × 10 m; W₂ = 70 N × 10 m; for 20 m: W = 70 N × 20 m.
Answer: W₁ = 400 J, W₂ = 700 J → more work in situation 2, because a bigger force was applied over the same displacement; the factor is force. Taking patient 2 for 20 m: W = 1400 J – the factor now is displacement. So the factors that affect work are force and displacement.
Unit of work = N × m = newton metre (N m), called the joule (J).

3 · What is 1 joule?

Textbook p 110

A force of 1 N moves an object 1 m along a horizontal surface in the direction of the force. Calculate the work done by the force on the object. (W = F × s; F = 1 N; s = ……; W = …… × …… = ……)

Just put F = 1 N and s = 1 m into W = F × s. What is 1 N × 1 m called?

🎬 Solution in exam layout
Given: F = 1 N; s = 1 m (in the direction of the force).
Formula: W = F × s.
Substitution: W = 1 N × 1 m.
Answer: W = 1 J. One joule is the work done when a force of 1 N moves an object through 1 m in the direction of the force. (About the work you do lifting a 100 g apple through 1 m – see question 5.)

4 · The crane and the container

Textbook p 110, Fig 6.3

A crane lifts a container of mass m kg through h metres. The weight of the container is mg newtons.

🎬 Solution animation – Fig 6.3 redrawn
⚠ Never stand or walk under a load that is being lifted by a crane – if the rope or hook fails, it falls with all that energy.
Force of the Earth on the container = its weight = mg, downwards. Force the crane must apply = mg, upwards (at least – equal to the weight, to lift it steadily).
Why: to raise the container at a steady speed the upward pull must balance the weight. The container moves up through h in the direction of the crane's force, so W = F × s = mg × h = mgh – the work done against gravity.

5 · Lifting 100 g through 1 m

Textbook p 111

Calculate the work needed to lift an object of mass 100 g through 1 m (g = 10 m/s²).

Use W = mgh. The mass must be in kilograms: 100 g = 100 ÷ 1000 kg.

🎬 Solution in exam layout – Given → Formula → Substitution → Answer
Given: m = 100 g = 0.1 kg; h = 1 m; g = 10 m/s².
Formula: W = mgh.
Substitution: W = 0.1 kg × 10 m/s² × 1 m.
Answer: W = 1 J.
⚠️ Common trap

Writing 100 × 10 × 1 = 1000 J. The formula needs the mass in kg: 100 g = 0.1 kg. A 1000-times-too-big answer is the commonest mistake in this chapter.

6 · The 50 kg barrel and the ramp

Textbook p 111

A barrel of mass 50 kg has to be loaded into a lorry. The height of the lorry from the ground is 2 m (g = 10 m/s²).

  1. Calculate the work done against the force of gravity when the barrel is loaded into the lorry.
  2. If it is rolled up to the 2 m height along a ramp (inclined plane) 5 m long, what is the work done on the barrel against gravity?
  3. Does the work done on the barrel against gravity depend on the path? Yes / No

Work against gravity = weight × vertical height = mgh. Which number in (b) is the height, and which is just the length of the slope?

🎬 Solution in exam layout – straight up, then up the ramp
🧪 Try it – change the length of the ramp (no friction)

Ignoring friction, the push needed along the ramp is F = mgh ÷ L. A longer ramp needs a smaller force, but over a longer distance – the work F × L stays 1000 J.

Given: m = 50 kg; h = 2 m; g = 10 m/s²; ramp length = 5 m.
Formula: work against gravity W = mgh.
Substitution: W = 50 kg × 10 m/s² × 2 m.
Answer: (a) W = 1000 J. (b) Along the ramp the barrel still rises only 2 m, so the work against gravity = 50 × 10 × 2 = 1000 J – the same. (c) No (ഇല്ല) – the work done against gravity does not depend on the path; it depends only on the weight and the vertical height.
💡 Why this matters

That is why headload workers use a plank to load heavy barrels into a lorry. The ramp does not save work – it lets them push with a smaller force (200 N instead of 500 N for this barrel, ignoring friction) over a longer distance (5 m instead of 2 m). 200 × 5 = 500 × 2 = 1000 J.

7 · Table 6.2 – the box on the table

Textbook pp 111–112, Fig 6.4

A girl pulls a box placed on a table (Fig 6.4). Complete the table. The forces on the box are: gravity – A, friction – B, the force of the table on the box – C, and the girl's force on the box – D.

Find which way the box actually moves. Then, for each arrow, ask: same way as the motion, opposite to it, or at right angles to it?

🎬 Solution animation – Fig 6.4 redrawn
Force on the box Work done on the box
girl's forceP → Dpositive
gravityP → A (down)zero
frictionP → Bnegative
force of the table on the boxP → C (up)zero
Direction of motion of the box: P → D. The box is displaced in the direction of the girl's force (D) and opposite to the friction (B).
Gravity (A) and the table's force (C) are vertical – at right angles to the horizontal motion – and they balance each other. A force can only do work if the object moves along its line, so they cause no displacement and do no work.

8 · Positive or negative work?

Textbook p 112

In each case write whether the work is positive or negative.

  1. The work done by gravity on a stone thrown upwards.
  2. The work done on the stone by the force we apply when we throw it up.
  3. The work done by the crane's force on an object it lifts.
  4. The work done by gravity on an object lifted by a crane.
  5. The work done by gravity on a coconut falling down.

Compare two arrows: the force and the displacement. Same direction → positive. Opposite → negative.

🃏 Sort them – tap Positive or Negative

Score: 0 / 0

🎬 Watch gravity's work change sign – throw a stone up
(1) gravity on a stone going up – negative (force down, displacement up); (2) our force throwing it up – positive; (3) the crane's force on a lifted object – positive; (4) gravity on an object lifted by a crane – negative; (5) gravity on a falling coconut – positive (force down, displacement down).

9 · The trolley: 95 N for 16 m

Textbook p 112

A person buying things at a supermarket applies a steady force of 95 N to push a trolley through 16 m. Calculate the work done.

Force and displacement are in the same direction, so W = F × s directly.

🎬 Solution in exam layout – Given → Formula → Substitution → Answer
Given: F = 95 N; s = 16 m (in the direction of the force).
Formula: W = F × s.
Substitution: W = 95 N × 16 m.
Answer: W = 1520 J.

10 · Forms of energy

Textbook p 113

Write examples of the forms of energy ഊർജരൂപങ്ങൾ you know (electrical energy, mechanical energy, heat energy, …).

In which unit is energy measured?

🎬 Forms of energy around a Kerala home
Electrical energy വൈദ്യുതോർജം (KSEB supply running a fan); mechanical energy യാന്ത്രികോർജം (a moving bus, water held up in a dam); heat energy താപോർജം (a hot iron box); chemical energy രാസോർജം (food, petrol, a torch cell); light energy പ്രകാശോർജം (an LED bulb); sound energy ശബ്ദോർജം (a loudspeaker, temple drums); solar energy സൗരോർജം; nuclear energy.
Energy is measured in the same unit as work – the joule (J), because energy is what gets turned into work. Food energy is often given in kilocalories (kcal).

11 · The energy in a mango

Textbook p 113

A mango contains about 840 kJ of energy. How many calories കലോറി is this equal to?

First change kJ to J (× 1000). Then, since 1 cal = 4.2 J, divide the joules by 4.2.

🎬 Solution in exam layout – Given → Formula → Substitution → Answer
🧪 Try other numbers – kJ to calories
Given: energy = 840 kJ = 840 × 1000 J = 840 000 J; 1 cal = 4.2 J.
Formula: number of calories = energy in J ÷ 4.2.
Substitution: 840 000 J ÷ 4.2 J/cal.
Answer: 200 000 cal = 200 kcal (because 1000 cal = 1 kcal).
⚠️ Common trap

Multiplying by 4.2 instead of dividing. A calorie is bigger than a joule (1 cal = 4.2 J), so the number of calories must come out smaller than the number of joules.

12 · The bow and the toy car

Textbook p 114, Fig 6.5

If the arrow in a drawn bow and the car standing high up are released, what will happen?

🎬 Solution animation – Fig 6.5 (a) and (b) released
When released, the arrow flies off and the toy car rolls down the ramp.
The arrow gets its energy from the stretched string and the bent bow – a special arrangement or shape, called configuration വിന്യാസം (configuration).
The toy car got its energy because of its position സ്ഥാനം – it is high up on the ramp (work was done against gravity to put it there).
Energy that an object has because of its position or configuration is potential energy

13 · Table 6.3 – position or shape?

Textbook p 115, Fig 6.6

An object of mass 50 kg is raised 8 m from the ground. (a) What is its potential energy when it is on the ground? (b) What is its potential energy at a height of 8 m? (g = 9.8 m/s²)

Ep = mgh, where h is the height above the ground, which we take as the zero (reference) level. What is h when the object is on the ground?

🎬 Solution in exam layout – Given → Formula → Substitution → Answer
(a) On the ground h = 0, so Ep = 0 J. Potential energy is relative: we choose the ground as the reference level അവലംബമാക്കുന്ന പ്രതലം and call its potential energy zero.
(b) Given: m = 50 kg; g = 9.8 m/s²; h = 8 m. Formula: Ep = mgh. Substitution: Ep = 50 kg × 9.8 m/s² × 8 m. Answer: Ep = 3920 J.

15 · The tin and the block

Textbook pp 116–117, Fig 6.8

Roll a cylindrical tin down a sloping plank so that it hits a wooden block; note how far the block moves. Then fill the same tin with sand and repeat, with the block back at its first position.

🎬 Solution animation – three runs of the tin
Yes, the block moves farther when the tin is filled with sand – the tin has more mass, so it has more kinetic energy and does more work on the block.
Released from a greater height, the sand-filled tin reaches the block with a greater velocity, and the block moves even farther – more velocity, more kinetic energy.
The two factors: mass of the object (m) and velocity of the object (v). (Together they give Ek = ½mv².)

In the animation the block's sliding distance is drawn proportional to the kinetic energy the tin brings (an idealisation with a fixed friction on the block; the tin's spin is ignored).

16 · Table 6.4 – kinetic energy

Textbook p 118

Complete Table 6.4 on the kinetic energy of objects: (10 kg, 2 m/s, 20 J), (5 kg, 2 m/s, ?), (10 kg, 4 m/s, ?), (10 kg, 1 m/s, ?).

Using Table 6.4, write what change happens to the kinetic energy when (a) the mass is doubled, (b) the velocity is tripled, (c) the velocity is halved.

Ek = ½ × m × v². Square v first, then multiply. Compare each new row with the first row (10 kg, 2 m/s, 20 J).

🎬 Solution – filling the table row by row
🧪 Try it – the kinetic energy builder
Mass m (kg)Velocity v (m/s)Ek = ½mv² (J)
10220
52½ × 5 × 4 = 10
104½ × 10 × 16 = 80
101½ × 10 × 1 = 5
(a) mass doubled (5 → 10 kg at 2 m/s): 10 J → 20 J – the KE doubles. (b) velocity tripled: KE becomes 3² = 9 times (e.g. 10 kg: 1 m/s → 3 m/s gives 5 J → 45 J). (c) velocity halved (4 → 2 m/s): 80 J → 20 J – the KE becomes ¼.
⚠️ Common trap

Thinking “velocity tripled → KE tripled”. KE depends on v squared: 3 times the speed gives 9 times the energy. That is why speeding vehicles are so much more dangerous.

17 · The motorcyclist

Textbook p 118

A motorcyclist travels in a straight line at 10 m/s. The mass of the motorcycle and rider together is 300 kg. (a) What is their total kinetic energy? (b) What will the kinetic energy be if the speed is doubled?

(a) Ek = ½mv² with v = 10 m/s. (b) Doubled speed = 20 m/s – or simply multiply (a) by 2² = 4.

🎬 Solution in exam layout – Given → Formula → Substitution → Answer
Given: m = 300 kg; v = 10 m/s; (b) v = 2 × 10 = 20 m/s.
Formula: Ek = ½mv².
Substitution: (a) Ek = ½ × 300 kg × (10 m/s)² = 150 × 100; (b) Ek = ½ × 300 × (20)² = 150 × 400.
Answer: (a) Ek = 15 000 J; (b) Ek = 60 000 J – four times as much.

18 · The shot put

Textbook p 119

An athlete throws a shot of mass 6 kg with a velocity of 12 m/s. What is the kinetic energy of the shot at that moment?

12² = 144. Then ½ × 6 × 144.

🎬 Solution in exam layout – Given → Formula → Substitution → Answer
Given: m = 6 kg; v = 12 m/s.
Formula: Ek = ½mv².
Substitution: Ek = ½ × 6 kg × (12 m/s)² = 3 × 144.
Answer: Ek = 432 J.

19 · The 0.5 kg ball

Textbook p 119

A ball of mass 0.5 kg is at a certain height above the ground. (a) If its potential energy is 98 J, at what height is it? (g = 9.8 m/s²) (b) If it falls freely, what is its kinetic energy just before it hits the ground?

(a) Rearrange Ep = mgh to h = Ep ÷ (mg). (b) While it falls freely (ignore air), the potential energy turns into kinetic energy.

🎬 Solution in exam layout – with energy bars
Given: m = 0.5 kg; Ep = 98 J; g = 9.8 m/s².
Formula: Ep = mgh ⇒ h = Ep ÷ (mg).
Substitution: h = 98 J ÷ (0.5 kg × 9.8 m/s²) = 98 ÷ 4.9.
Answer: (a) h = 20 m. (b) Just before it hits the ground all 98 J of potential energy has become kinetic energy: Ek = 98 J (air resistance ignored). The ball's potential energy has changed into kinetic energy.

20 · Machines change energy

Write some machines and the energy transformation ഊർജപരിവർത്തനം in each. (An electric motor changes electrical energy into mechanical energy; a petrol car changes chemical energy into kinetic energy.)

🎬 Energy in → machine → energy out
Mixer grinder: electrical → mechanical (and some sound and heat). Fan: electrical → kinetic energy of the blades and the air. Iron box: electrical → heat. LED bulb: electrical → light (and a little heat). Solar cell: light → electrical. Loudspeaker: electrical → sound. Torch: chemical (cell) → electrical → light. Generator: mechanical → electrical. Our body: chemical (food) → mechanical and heat.

21 · The balloon toy car

Textbook pp 119–120, Fig 6.9
🎬 Solution animation – Fig 6.9 in motion
Blowing up the balloon stretches its rubber – its shape (configuration) changes and work is done on it. So the blown-up balloon mainly has potential energy due to configuration. When the nozzle is opened, the stretched rubber squeezes the air out backwards through the straw; the air pushes the car forwards (action and reaction – third law). As the car moves, the balloon's potential energy changes into kinetic energy of the car (and the air).
A good balloon car: a light body; wheels that turn freely with little friction on straight axles; the straw pointing straight backwards; a big, well-stretched balloon; a smooth floor.

22 · The pile driver

Textbook pp 120–121, Fig 6.10

The hammer of a pile driver (Fig 6.10) has mass m = 1000 kg and is 10 m above the top of the pile (g = 9.8 m/s²). Work out:

At the top the hammer is at rest, so Ek = 0. At ground level h = 0, so Ep = 0. Use v² = u² + 2gh with u = 0.

⚠ On a construction site (Kochi Metro pillars, bridges) keep well away from a pile driver – the hammer carries about 98 000 J when it lands.
🎬 Solution in exam layout – the hammer falls, the bars change, the total stays
🧪 Try it – stop the hammer anywhere on its way down
At the top: Ep = mgh = 1000 × 9.8 × 10 = 98 000 J; at rest, Ek = 0; total = 98 000 + 0 = 98 000 J.
Just before hitting the pile (ground level): u = 0; v² = u² + 2gh = 0 + 2 × 9.8 × 10 = 196 (v = 14 m/s); Ek = ½mv² = ½ × 1000 × 196 = 98 000 J; Ep = 0; total = 0 + 98 000 = 98 000 J.
Conclusion: the total energy is the same. The energy has changed from one form (potential) into another (kinetic) without any loss or gain – the law of conservation of energy ഊർജസംരക്ഷണ നിയമം: energy can neither be created nor destroyed.
Similarities of work and energy: both are scalar quantities അദിശ അളവുകൾ; both have the same unit, the joule; and energy is what is used up when work is done (work done = energy transferred).

Name some electrical appliances. Do they all use electrical energy at the same rate?

🎬 Solution animation – from the Sun to your bulb (Table 6.5)
Plants use sunlight in photosynthesis to make food: light energy → chemical energy stored in the food. Our food comes from plants (or from animals that ate plants), so its chemical energy was originally solar energy. Power stations: yes – a hydroelectric station uses water lifted by the Sun's water cycle; wind blows because the Sun heats air unevenly; solar panels use sunlight directly; thermal stations burn coal formed from ancient plants. Petrol and diesel formed over millions of years from the remains of ancient organisms, which got their energy from the Sun – it is stored chemical energy.
Hydroelectric station: the water in the reservoir has potential energy (because of its height). It got it from the Sun: sunlight evaporates water from the sea, the vapour rises, falls as rain on the hills and is stored high up behind the dam. Water flowing down the penstock has kinetic energy (and its potential energy decreases).

Appliances: motor, fan, iron box, TV, mixer, fridge, washing machine, LED bulb … They do not all use electrical energy at the same rate – an iron box uses it much faster than an LED bulb. The rate is called power (next question).

Idukki's water, for example, drops several hundred metres through penstocks to the Moolamattom power house – see page 14 for the numbers.

24 · Table 6.6 – the book race

Textbook pp 123–124

Four students each lift ten books, one at a time, from the floor onto a table; the time taken is measured with a stopwatch and entered in Table 6.6 (g = 10 m/s²).

🎬 Solution animation – a virtual race with sample values
Sample values: 10 books of 0.5 kg each (total 5 kg), table 0.75 m high, g = 10 m/s².

Yes, all did the same work (same books, same height: 5 × 10 × 0.75 = 37.5 J). The fastest is the one who took the least time (Anu, 15 s), and she also did the most work per second (2.5 J/s). Work done per second is power: P = W / t. Unit of power = joule / second = J/s = watt (W).

25 · The iron box

Textbook p 125

An electric iron box does 15 kJ of work in 20 seconds. Calculate its power.

Also: find and write the names of some electrical appliances at home and the power marked on them.

Change 15 kJ to joules first, then P = W ÷ t.

🎬 Solution in exam layout – Given → Formula → Substitution → Answer
Given: W = 15 kJ = 15 000 J; t = 20 s.
Formula: P = W ÷ t.
Substitution: P = 15 000 J ÷ 20 s.
Answer: P = 750 W (= 0.75 kW).
Typical power ratings (approx.; read the label on yours): LED bulb 9 W, ceiling fan 60 W, TV 100 W, fridge 150 W, mixer 500 W, iron box 750–1000 W, 1 HP pump 746 W.
⚠ Never touch switches or plugs with wet hands, and switch an iron box off at the plug after use.
