The Sun, Hydroelectric Power and Power
Now we can answer the question from the chapter's first page: how does the water in a dam get so much energy? We trace energy back to the Sun, follow it through a hydroelectric power station to the bulb in your room, and then ask a new question – how fast is work done? That rate is called power.
- Ep = mgh, Ek = ½mv², and energy changes form without loss (pages 7–9).
- Powers of ten: 10³ = 1000, 10⁶ = 10,00,000 (ten lakh); kJ → J: × 1000 (page 2).
1. The Sun – the main source of energy on Earth (Fig 6.11)
– Where does the energy for all our work mainly come from? Observe Fig 6.11 and find out that the main source of energy on Earth is the Sun (സൗരോർജം – solar energy).
Textbook questions (page 122)
– How do plants use solar energy?
– How is the energy we get from food related to the Sun? Write the energy change.
– Is the production of energy in power stations related to the Sun?
– How is the energy in petrol and diesel related to the Sun?
2. All our food comes from plants, directly (rice, fruits, vegetables) or through animals that ate plants (milk, eggs, fish). So the chemical energy in food is solar energy stored by plants. Chain: light (Sun) → chemical (plants, food) → mechanical and heat energy in our body.
3. Yes. Hydroelectric stations use water lifted up by the Sun's water cycle; wind farms use winds caused by the Sun heating the Earth unevenly; solar panels use sunlight directly; thermal stations burn coal, which formed from ancient plants that stored solar energy.
4. Petrol and diesel come from petroleum, formed over millions of years from the remains of ancient plants and tiny sea organisms. Their chemical energy was originally solar energy captured by those living things.
2. The hydroelectric power station (Fig 6.12, Table 6.5)
– Look at the diagram of a hydroelectric power station (ജലവൈദ്യുതനിലയം). Water stored behind a dam in the reservoir (റിസർവോയർ / അണക്കെട്ട്) flows down a big pipe called the penstock (പെൻസ്റ്റോക്ക്), spins a turbine (ടർബൈൻ) and the turbine turns a generator (ജനറേറ്റർ).
Each second, (flow × 1000) kg of water falls through the head h, so the energy released per second is mgh = 1000 × Q × 9.8 × h joules. A real station turns roughly 90 % of this into electrical energy (approx.); the rest becomes heat and sound in the turbines and pipes.
Textbook questions (pages 122–123)
– What energy does the water in the reservoir have?
– How did the water in the dam get this potential energy?
– The pipe that lets the water flow down is the penstock. What energy does the water flowing through it have?
2. From the Sun: the Sun's heat evaporates water from the sea and land; the vapour rises, forms clouds and falls as rain on the hills (the water cycle). Rivers carry it into the reservoir, high up behind the dam. So the Sun did the work of lifting the water – that is how the water gets "so much energy" (the question on page 107)!
3. Kinetic energy (it is moving fast) – together with its remaining potential energy, which keeps falling as it goes down. The generator changes this into electrical energy. Reservoirs store huge amounts of water, so they are a big source of energy.
– Complete the energy changes from the water in the station to a glowing bulb at home.

The chapter-opening picture is a dam in Kerala's hills. In the Idukki hydroelectric project, run by KSEB, water stored behind the Idukki arch dam on the Periyar travels through a tunnel and steep penstocks down to the underground Moolamattom power house, roughly 650 m lower (approx.). Six generators of 130 MW each give 780 MW in all – the largest hydroelectric station in Kerala. Press the 🌴 button in the lab to try these numbers.
– We use much more than bulbs at home. Name some electrical appliances: • motor (മോട്ടോർ) • fan • iron box • TV • mixer grinder • refrigerator • washing machine • LED bulb …
Q (page 123). – Do all of them use electrical energy at the same rate?
3. Power – how fast is work done? (Table 6.6)
– Let us do an activity (പ്രവർത്തനം). Ten books are stacked on the floor. Four friends sitting next to each other in class take turns to lift the books one at a time and stack them on the table as fast as they can. Each one's time for all ten books is measured with a stopwatch and written in Table 6.6 (g = 10 m/s²).
| No. | Name പേര് | Time t (s) സമയം | Total mass of books (kg) | Height h (m) | Work mgh (J) | Rate of work = work ÷ time (J/s) |

Textbook questions (page 124)
– Did all the students do the same amount of work?
– Who did the work fastest?
– Who did more work in one second?
2. The student who took the least time – in our race Anu (15 s).
3. Also Anu: 37.5 J ÷ 15 s = 2.5 J every second, more than Rahul (1.875), Fathima (1.5) and Joseph (1.25). – The work done in one second is the power.
Power is the work done in unit time, that is, the rate of doing work.
Power = worktime പവർ = പ്രവൃത്തി ÷ സമയം P = Wt
Unit of power = unit of work ÷ unit of time = J/s = watt (W) (വാട്ട്).
– The SI unit of power is named the watt, in memory of James Watt; its symbol is W. 1 W = 1 J/s. (Careful: the same letter W is also used for work in formulas – read the context.)
Country (ജന്മരാജ്യം): Scotland, Britain (ബ്രിട്ടനിലെ സ്കോട്ട്ലാന്റ്) · Lived (ജീവിത കാലഘട്ടം): 1736–1819
- In 1764, while trying to repair a Newcomen engine, he went on to build a much more efficient steam engine.
- Steam engines were then used only in mines; he found ways to use them much more widely.
- For this he is regarded as a scientist who helped the Industrial Revolution that began in Europe.
1 kilowatt: 1 kW = 10³ W = 1000 W
1 megawatt: 1 MW = 1000 kW = 10⁶ W = 10,00,000 W (ten lakh watts)
Vehicles and motors: horsepower (കുതിരശക്തി, HP) – 1 HP = 746 W
4. Power ratings at home
– Find the power written on some appliances at home (look for a label or plate: "230 V, 750 W"). Typical values (approx.):
| Appliance | Typical power (approx.) | Energy used in 1 hour | Energy changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| LED bulb | 9 W | 9 × 3600 = 32 400 J | electrical → light (+ a little heat) |
| ceiling fan | 60 W | 216 000 J | electrical → kinetic |
| television | 100 W | 360 000 J | electrical → light + sound |
| refrigerator | 150 W | 540 000 J | electrical → mechanical (compressor), heat moved out |
| mixer grinder | 500 W | 1 800 000 J | electrical → mechanical + sound |
| iron box | 750–1000 W | 2 700 000–3 600 000 J | electrical → heat |
| water pump motor | 1 HP = 746 W | 2 685 600 J | electrical → mechanical (PE of water in the tank) |
The "unit" on an electricity bill is a kilowatt hour (kWh): the energy used by a 1 kW appliance in 1 hour. 1 kWh = 1000 W × 3600 s = 3.6 × 106 J. A 1000 W iron box used for 30 minutes uses ½ unit.
Q (page 125). – An electric iron box does 15 kJ of work in 20 seconds. Calculate its power.
Change 15 kJ to joules first (× 1000), then P = W ÷ t.
