emf, Cells, Batteries and Combining Cells

A torch cell, a button cell, a bicycle dynamo and a solar panel all do the same job – they keep a potential difference in a circuit – but each turns a different kind of energy into electrical energy. On this page you build Volta's cell, sort primary and secondary cells, measure emfs with a voltmeter and join cells in series and in parallel.

📖 What you need (page 5 of this guide)

1. Sources of emf and their energy changes (Table 7.2)

– The torch cell we use every day is a source of emf. Write down other sources of emf you know, and the energy change (ഊർജമാറ്റം) in each.

📝 Table 7.2 – sources of emf (emf ന്റെ സ്രോതസ്സ്) and energy change
Source of emfEnergy change

The first two rows are filled in the textbook. Choose the energy change for the rest; the last three rows are extra examples you can add to your science diary.

2. Alessandro Volta and the voltaic cell (Fig 7.9)

– The first device that could be used as a source of emf was designed by the scientist Alessandro Volta. It is the voltaic cell (വോൾട്ടാ സെൽ).

– Dip a zinc rod and a copper rod into dilute sulphuric acid (the electrolyte) in a beaker. Connect a voltmeter to the copper rod and the zinc rod.

⚠ Acid burns skin and eyes. Do this activity only in the school lab, with your teacher, wearing goggles – never at home.
🧪 Virtual lab: build a voltaic cell (Fig 7.9)
Second rod: Connect:

Values are approximate: an ideal copper–zinc cell gives about 1.1 V and copper–magnesium about 2.7 V; a home-made cell usually gives a little less. A red LED needs roughly 1.8 V to glow (approx.). The fading is a simple model of the reaction slowing down.

Textbook questions (page 136)

– What do you observe (with the voltmeter)?
– Use Mg instead of Zn and an LED instead of the voltmeter. What do you observe?
– What happens to the brightness after the cell has worked for a while?
– What is the reason?
1. The voltmeter needle deflects (about 1 V). Why: zinc reacts with the acid and gives up electrons; these electrons flow through the outside circuit (the voltmeter) to the copper. Copper is at the higher potential (+), zinc at the lower potential (−), so in the outer circuit the current flows from copper to zinc.
2. The LED glows. Why: the copper–magnesium pair gives a larger p.d. (about 2.7 V, approx.) – enough for the LED.
3. The brightness decreases. Why: see 4.
4. The rate of the chemical reaction falls, so less electrical energy is produced. Why: the cell's electrical energy comes from the reaction; as the reaction slows, the energy supplied slows too.

3. Primary cells and secondary cells (Fig 7.10, 7.11)

– Cells like this, which cannot be used again once used up, are primary cells (പ്രൈമറി സെൽ).

🔋 Fig 7.10 and Fig 7.11 – cells and storage batteries
⭐ Key idea (textbook pages 136–137) – primary and secondary cells; battery

🧪 Sort them: primary or secondary?
Cell / batteryType
🌴 Kerala connection – power cuts, inverters and two-wheelers

When KSEB power goes off during a monsoon storm, many homes keep their fans and lights running on an inverter. Its big battery is a secondary (storage) battery: it is charged while the mains supply is on (electrical → chemical energy) and gives electricity during the power cut (chemical → electrical). A scooter's 12 V battery is six lead-acid cells of about 2 V each joined in series (approx.) – you will see why that adds up to 12 V in section 5.

4. Measuring emf with a voltmeter (Fig 7.12, Table 7.3)

– How do we measure the p.d. between the terminals of a cell? With a voltmeter. A voltmeter also has two terminals, + and −.

🧪 Virtual lab: read the voltmeter (Fig 7.12, Table 7.3)
Table 7.3 – sample readings (typical values, approx.) – your real readings will differ

Textbook questions (page 137)

– To which terminal of the cell is the positive terminal of the voltmeter connected?
– And the negative terminal?
1. To the cell's positive (+) terminal. Why: a needle voltmeter is built to deflect the right way only when its + is at the higher potential.
2. To the cell's negative (−) terminal. Why: if the leads are swapped, the needle tries to move backwards against its stop (a digital meter shows a minus sign).
💡 Seminar idea (page 137) – from Volta's cell to solar panels

– Collect information about sources of electricity from the early voltaic cell to today's solar panels: their features and where they are used. A possible outline: voltaic pile (1800) → lead-acid storage battery (1859) → zinc–carbon dry cell (1880s) → alkaline and button cells → lithium-ion batteries in phones and laptops (1990s) → silicon solar cells (1950s onwards) on rooftops and in solar parks. (Years approx.)

5. Combining cells (Fig 7.13, Table 7.4)

– Arrange two torch cells in the three ways shown, measure the p.d. of each arrangement with a voltmeter and record it (സെല്ലുകളുടെ ക്രമീകരണം – combination of cells).

🧪 Virtual lab: series, parallel or + to +? (Fig 7.13, 7.15, 7.16)
Table 7.4 – readings from this ideal model (fresh 1.5 V cells); real cells read a little differently
Circuit സെർക്കീട്ട്Number of cells സെല്ലുകളുടെ എണ്ണംVoltmeter reading / p.d. (V)

– In which arrangement did you get the greatest p.d.?

In arrangement 1 – series, Fig 7.13 (a): 3 V (parallel gave 1.5 V, + to + gave 0 V). Why: in series the + of one cell is joined to the − of the next, so each cell lifts the charges through another 1.5 V – the emfs add up.

– Arrangement (a) is the series connection (ശ്രേണീരീതി): the positive terminal of one cell is joined to the negative terminal of the next. The more cells in series, the greater the p.d.

⭐ Key idea (textbook page 138) – cells in series

When cells are connected in series, the total emf is the sum of the emfs of the cells. Three 1.5 V cells in series (Fig 7.15): 1.5 + 1.5 + 1.5 = 4.5 V.

📒 Science diary (സയൻസ് ഡയറി) – where are cells joined in series?

– Arrangement (b) is the parallel connection (സമാന്തരരീതി): the + terminals are joined together and the − terminals are joined together (Fig 7.16).

⭐ Key idea (textbook page 139) – identical cells in parallel

Identical cells in parallel give only the p.d. of one cell (1.5 V). They are connected this way so that the current lasts longer – each cell supplies only part of the current. The cells inside mobile phones and power banks are connected in parallel (Fig 7.14).

⚠️ Fig 7.13 (c) – never arrange cells like this

– With + joined to +, the two cells push against each other: 1.5 V − 1.5 V = 0 V. No p.d., so never arrange cells like this. (That is why torches show which way round to put the cells.)

6. Two textbook questions (page 139)

Question 1. – You are given four cells of emf 1.5 V each. What is the maximum p.d. you can get from them? Draw the arrangement.

Which arrangement adds the emfs? Join + of one cell to − of the next.

🎬 Solution in exam layout – four cells
Answer: maximum p.d. = 1.5 + 1.5 + 1.5 + 1.5 = 4 × 1.5 = 6 V, with all four cells in series (− + − + − + − +: the + of each cell touches the − of the next). More: page 11 ▶

– A 9 V battery has 6 identical cells connected in series. What is the emf of one cell?

In series the emfs add: 6 × (emf of one cell) = 9 V.

🎬 Solution in exam layout – inside a 9 V battery
Answer: emf of one cell = 9 V ÷ 6 = 1.5 V. More: page 11 ▶

7. Safety rules for cells and batteries (page 139)

⚠️ Safety rules when using cells and batteries

⚠ Never short-circuit a cell or battery; never put cells in your mouth; stop if a battery gets hot; keep water and fire away; dispose of batteries (nickel, cadmium, lead) at e-waste collection points.
⚠ Never experiment with the mains supply (230 V AC) at home – it can kill. Use only torch cells or a 9 V battery.
