What Affects Resistance? The Rheostat

Why is a heater coil made of nichrome while house wiring is copper? Why does a thick wire carry current more easily than a thin one? On this page you measure a heater coil hot and cold, test four wires on a board (Fig 7.25), explore length, thickness and material, and slide the contact of a rheostat to dim a bulb.

📖 What you need (page 8 of this guide)

1. Resistors and the multimeter (Fig 7.24)

⭐ Key idea (textbook page 146) – resistor

A conductor used to put a definite resistance into a circuit is a resistor. Its symbol is a zig-zag or a rectangle. The multimeter (മൾട്ടിമീറ്റർ) measures resistance directly; it can also measure potential difference and current.

– Resistors of many values are sold in the market and are used in all electronic devices. Their value is either printed on them or shown with colour codes (coloured bands).

🎨 Go further: read a resistor's colour bands

Standard code: black 0, brown 1, red 2, orange 3, yellow 4, green 5, blue 6, violet 7, grey 8, white 9. Bands 1 and 2 are digits, band 3 says how many zeros follow, band 4 is the tolerance (gold ±5 %, silver ±10 %). Not in the textbook – just for fun.

The thinking student asks: – What are the factors that affect resistance?

2. Hot and cold – the heater coil

– Measure the resistance of the nichrome (നിക്രോം) coil of an electric heater with a multimeter, just after the heater is switched off and again after it has cooled.

⚠ A heater runs on the mains (230 V AC). Your teacher must switch it off and pull out the plug before anyone touches it with multimeter probes – and the hot coil burns. Never experiment with the mains supply at home.
🧪 Virtual lab: heater coil, hot and cold

Model (approx.): a 1000 W heater coil of about 53 Ω when red-hot (≈ 700 °C) and about 41 Ω at room temperature. Readings update as the coil cools.

Textbook questions (page 146)

– When is the resistance greater?
– Do any other factors affect resistance?
1. When the coil is hot – just after the heater is switched off. Why: in a hot metal the atoms vibrate more strongly, so the free electrons collide with them more often. താപനില കുറയുന്നതിനനുസരിച്ച് പ്രതിരോധവും കുറയുന്നു – as the temperature falls, the resistance falls.
2. Yes – length, thickness (area of cross-section) and the material. Why: the activity of Fig 7.25 below shows each of them.

3. Length, thickness and material (Fig 7.25, Table 7.9)

GH. – On a wooden board: CD is a 40 cm nichrome wire; EF is nichrome of the same length but double thickness; GH is copper of the same length and thickness as CD. M is the midpoint of CD. A bulb, an ammeter and a 3 V battery are joined to the left ends; the free end J, joined to the battery's − terminal, is touched to M, D, F and H in turn.

🧪 Virtual lab: the resistance board (Fig 7.25)
Touch J to:
Table 7.9 – sample readings from a stated model (3 V battery, bulb taken as a fixed 5 Ω, CD = 4 Ω) – your real readings will differ

"Double thickness" is taken as double the area of cross-section, which halves the resistance. (If it meant double the diameter, the area would be 4 times and the resistance a quarter.)

– The p.d. is the same (3 V) every time, so by V = IR any change in the ammeter reading must come from a change in resistance.

Textbook questions (page 147)

– In which case is the ammeter reading (current) the least?
Why? (more resistance / less resistance)
– What happens to the resistance when the length of the same conductor increases?
– What happens when the thickness of the same conductor increases?
– Nichrome or copper of the same length and thickness – which has more resistance?
1. When J touches D (the full 40 cm of thin nichrome). Why: see 2.
2. More resistance (പ്രതിരോധം കൂടുതൽ). Why: same p.d., so the smallest current means the largest resistance (I = V/R).
3. The resistance increases. Why: M (20 cm) gave more current than D (40 cm) – a longer path means more collisions.
4. The resistance decreases. Why: F (thick) gave more current than D (thin) of the same length – a thicker wire offers more room for the electrons, like a wider road.
5. Nichrome. Why: H (copper) gave the largest current of all; copper's resistance is very low.

📒 Factors that affect the resistance of a conductor

⭐ Key idea (textbook page 148) – how resistance depends on the conductor

💡 Go further – resistivity

All three factors fit one formula: R = ρL/A, where L is the length, A the area of cross-section and ρ ("rho", the resistivity) a number for each material – about 1.1 × 10−6 Ω m for nichrome and 1.7 × 10−8 Ω m for copper (approx.). Nichrome's is about 65 times copper's – so heater coils are nichrome and connecting wires are copper. You will meet this formula in higher classes.

In 1911 it was found that some metals and compounds, at very low temperatures, have no electrical resistance at all. Such materials are superconductors (അതിചാലകങ്ങൾ); current flows through them without any loss of energy. (The discovery was made by Heike Kamerlingh Onnes with mercury cooled to about −269 °C; superconducting magnets are used today in hospital MRI scanners.)

4. The rheostat (Fig 7.26, 7.27)

(Rheostat). – When the length of a conductor increases with no change in thickness, its resistance increases. The rheostat (റിയോസ്റ്റാറ്റ്) works on this principle. In school labs it is put in a circuit to change the current as needed. Its symbol is a resistor with an arrow across it.

In Fig 7.27: AB – a coil of high-resistance wire wound on an insulating tube; DC – a metal rod of very low resistance; S – the sliding contact (സമ്പർക്കകം). – Current entering at A passes through the turns of wire, then through S into the rod, and leaves at C.

🧪 Virtual lab: slide the contact S (Fig 7.26, 7.27)

Model: 100 turns, 0.15 Ω per turn; 3 V battery; bulb taken as a fixed 5 Ω.

– What is the working principle of a rheostat?

For the same thickness, the resistance of a conductor increases with its length. Moving S changes the length of resistance wire (the number of turns) in the circuit, so it changes the resistance and hence the current. Why: in the lab, S near D puts few turns in the circuit (small R, bright bulb); S near C puts all 100 turns in (15 Ω, dim bulb).
🌴 Kerala connection – the old fan regulator

Older ceiling-fan regulators in many Kerala homes worked like a rheostat: turning the knob put more or less resistance wire in series with the fan, changing the current and so the speed. (They got warm – wasted energy. Modern electronic regulators are more efficient.) You will meet the fan and its regulator again in the "Let us assess" questions.

Textbook question (page 149). – A rheostat has 100 turns of resistance wire, each turn 0.15 Ω. Which of these values cannot be put into a circuit with it? Justify.   a) 3 Ω   b) 7.5 Ω   c) 4 Ω   d) 8.25 Ω

S can only stop at a whole number of turns. Divide each value by 0.15 Ω and see whether you get a whole number (and not more than 100).

🎬 Solution in exam layout – which value is impossible?
Answer: (c) 4 Ω. Number of turns = R ÷ 0.15: 3 Ω → 20 ✓; 7.5 Ω → 50 ✓; 4 Ω → 26.67 ✗ (not a whole number of turns); 8.25 Ω → 55 ✓. The possible values are 0, 0.15, 0.30, … up to 100 × 0.15 = 15 Ω. More: page 11 ▶
