The Ear, Hearing and Ear Care

A bell vibrates, the air carries the vibration… and then? Something in your head has to catch it. On this page you build a model eardrum that makes mustard seeds dance, follow a sound wave all the way into the ear and up to the brain, learn about people who cannot hear – and how all of us should look after our ears.

📖 What you need (pages 3, 5 and 6 of this guide)

1. Is a source and a medium enough?

Can we hear a sound just because there is a source and a medium?

– How are we able to hear sound? Which sense organ helps us? Look at Fig 8.13:

The boy: “Grandma, you look very tired. Please eat this.”
Grandma: “Eh? I can't hear anything, son… speak louder!”

The boy's voice (the source) and the air (the medium) are both there – but Grandma's ears no longer work well, so she cannot hear him. Hearing often becomes weaker in old age. So we need a third thing: the organ of hearing (ശ്രവണേന്ദ്രിയം) – the ear.

🧪 The three things needed to hear a sound

2. Activity – the mustard-seed eardrum (Fig 8.14)

– Cut off both ends of a plastic bottle. Stretch a piece of a burst balloon over one end as a diaphragm (ഡയഫ്രം). Fix a transparent border 2 cm high around the bottle above the diaphragm, and put some mustard seeds on the diaphragm. Then speak loudly into the open end so that the sound strikes the diaphragm.

⚠ Let an adult cut the bottle – cut edges are sharp; cover them with tape. Speak loudly, but don't scream into the bottle.
🧪 Virtual lab: speak into the bottle (Fig 8.14)
Textbook question (page 165)Your answer
Don't the seeds move up and down?
Didn't the seeds move because the diaphragm vibrated?

Slow motion, with the movement exaggerated. Your breath cannot be the reason: the diaphragm is airtight, so no air passes through it – only the vibrations do.

– Our ear also has a part that can vibrate like this: the eardrum or tympanum (കർണ്ണപുടം), a thin stretched membrane across the inner end of the ear canal.

3. How we hear (Fig 8.15)

🎬 From the tuning fork to the brain – step by step
⭐ Key idea (textbook page 165)

A vibrating object makes rapid pressure variations in the air around it. These travel through the medium and make the eardrum vibrate. The eardrum sends the vibrations to the inner ear (ആന്തരകർണ്ണം); from there signals reach the brain, and then we perceive the sound. To experience sound we need three things: a source, a medium and an organ of hearing.

4. Hearing impairment and World Hearing Day (Fig 8.16)

– Have you ever thought about the world of people who cannot hear? – The organ of hearing can be damaged from birth or later in life, and people with hearing loss face many difficulties.

3 March · World Hearing Day · ലോക ശ്രവണദിനം
“Those who have lost their hearing are not strangers to society.” (the poster in Fig 8.16)

📒 Science diary – difficulties faced by people with hearing loss

  • Missing warnings – horns, alarms, a pressure-cooker whistle, someone shouting “watch out!”.
  • Difficulty following lessons in class, especially when the teacher faces the board.
  • Loneliness and feeling left out of conversations, games and celebrations.
  • Being misunderstood as rude or inattentive.
  • Fewer job opportunities; trouble using phones and public announcements.

📒 How should we treat people with hearing loss?

  • Face them when you speak, speak clearly and a little slowly – don't shout, and don't cover your mouth (many people lip-read).
  • Use written notes, pictures, gestures and captions; learn a little sign language.
  • Get their attention gently (a wave or a light tap) before speaking.
  • Never mock or imitate them; include them in games and group work.
  • Help them sit in the front of the class and near the teacher.

Task (page 166). – Prepare a short note to present on World Hearing Day.

World Hearing Day – 3 March. Dear friends, hearing lets us learn, talk, enjoy music and stay safe. Some people are born with hearing loss and many others lose their hearing through illness, ear infections, loud noise or old age. Hearing loss can be found early with a simple test using an audiometer, and hearing aids can help. Let us protect our ears: never put pins, sticks or deep cotton buds into them, keep away from very loud sounds, and keep earphone volume low. And let us remember the poster: those who have lost their hearing are not strangers to society. Let us face them when we speak, be patient and include them in everything we do. Thank you.
📚 Helen Keller (ഹെലൻ കെല്ലർ) 1880–1968

Helen Keller was born on 27 June 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama, USA. At 19 months of age an illness took away both her sight and her hearing – she grew up in a world of darkness and silence. With the help of her teacher Anne Sullivan, who spelled words into her palm, and through her own hard work and self-confidence, she learned to read, write and speak. She excelled in literature, social service and teaching, and became an inspiration to the whole of humanity. Her autobiography is “The Story of My Life”.

– Like Beethoven, who gave the world some of its sweetest music even after losing his hearing, Helen Keller showed that people with hearing impairment can overcome it with courage, determination and hard work.

5. Testing hearing and the hearing aid (Fig 8.17)

– Hearing loss can be detected by a hearing test using an audiometer (ഓഡിയോമീറ്റർ). The person wears headphones; the audiologist (ഓഡിയോളജിസ്റ്റ്) plays beeps of different pitches, each softer and softer, and the person raises a hand whenever a beep is heard. The softest beep heard at each pitch is recorded on a chart.

– A hearing aid (ശ്രവണ സഹായി) is an electronic device that helps people with hearing loss to hear.

🧪 How a hearing aid helps

🎤 Interview an audiologist (ഓഡിയോളജിസ്റ്റുമായി അഭിമുഖം)

– Interview an audiologist about hearing tests and present what you learn in class. Questions you could ask:

  1. How is a hearing test done? What does the audiometer show?
  2. How can parents find out early that a baby cannot hear well?
  3. What are the common causes of hearing loss in children and in older people?
  4. How loud is too loud? How long can we safely use earphones?
  5. How does a hearing aid work? Who needs a cochlear implant?
  6. What should we do (and not do) when the ear hurts or has wax?

6. Protection of the ear (page 167)

Putting any object into the ear is very dangerous: it can tear the eardrum and cause loss of hearing. Because of the special structure of the ear, a wound inside it heals only with difficulty; it can get infected and affect our hearing.

⚠ Never put pins, hairpins, sticks, matchsticks, pen caps or cotton buds deep into the ear. Ear wax protects the ear and usually comes out by itself; if the ear feels blocked or hurts, see a doctor.
🧪 Ear care – safe or harmful?

Task (page 167). – Find out what we should take care of regarding our ears and present it in class.

  1. Never insert pins, sticks or cotton buds deep into the ear; clean only the outer ear with a soft cloth.
  2. Keep dirty water out of the ears while bathing in ponds and rivers; dry the outer ear gently.
  3. Avoid very loud sounds – firecrackers, loudspeakers, air horns; use ear plugs or ear muffs near loud machines.
  4. Keep earphone volume low (a common guideline: below about 60 % volume, not more than about an hour at a time) and give the ears rest.
  5. Never slap or hit anyone on the ear – it can burst the eardrum.
  6. See a doctor for ear pain, discharge, itching or blocked ears and for colds that affect the ears; do not pour oil or other liquids into the ear yourself.
  7. Get a hearing test if you find it hard to hear in class or keep turning up the TV volume.
⚠ Loud sound damages hearing for ever: sounds above about 85 dB (approx.) for a long time, or a single very loud bang such as a firecracker close by, can harm the inner ear. If you have to shout to be heard by someone an arm's length away, the place is too loud.
