Music, Noise and Noise Pollution

A veena in the music room makes you want to listen; the horns at a traffic junction make you want to cover your ears. Both are sound – so what is the difference? On this page you compare the vibration patterns of music and noise, walk through a noisy town with a sound meter, and sort out what really helps to reduce noise pollution.

📖 What you need (pages 3, 5 and 8 of this guide)

1. Music and noise (Fig 8.18)

Why does the sound at a traffic junction feel unpleasant?

– Compare the melodious sound in the music class (Fig 8.18 b) with the sound at the traffic junction (Fig 8.18 a). Which is pleasant to hear? – A chiratta-veena gives sweet music. Now rub a coconut shell on a stone and listen. Compare the two sounds.

🧪 Virtual lab: what does the vibration look like?

The trace is a sketch of how the air pressure near your ear goes up and down with time (slowed down). The page is silent; the optional button plays a quiet 1-second sample – a steady note for music, a hiss for noise – keep your volume low, and never put earphones at full volume.

⭐ Key idea (textbook page 167)

Sound produced by regular (orderly) vibrations and pleasant to hear is called music (സംഗീതം). Sound produced by irregular vibrations and unpleasant to hear is called noise (ഒച്ച).

Q (page 167). – Have you ever felt that even music was noise? Doesn't sound louder than a certain limit feel unpleasant?

Yes. Music played too loudly – a loudspeaker blaring film songs at a function late at night, a neighbour's music when you are trying to study or sleep – becomes unpleasant; it is then noise for us. Beyond a limit, any sound is unpleasant, however sweet it is. Why: very loud sound strains the ear and disturbs us; and unwanted sound at the wrong time or place is noise. Try it in the lab: push the loudness above about 85 dB.

– Doesn't loud sound harm the ear?

Yes. Long exposure to sound above about 85 dB (approx.), or a sudden very loud sound such as a firecracker close by (120 dB or more), can damage the delicate parts of the inner ear and cause permanent hearing loss and ringing in the ears. It can even tear the eardrum. Why it is serious: the damaged parts of the inner ear do not grow back.

2. Noise pollution (Fig 8.19)

– Look at the collage of Fig 8.19 (traffic, a lorry, an aircraft, a factory chimney, a crane, a train, a loudspeaker – and a child covering her ears). It says:

Noise pollution is a serious public-health problem.”
What is your response to this statement?
What do you understand by noise pollution?
1. I agree. Noise affects everyone in a town, every day: it causes hearing loss, headaches, sleeplessness, stress and high blood pressure, and it disturbs studies and patients – so it is a public-health problem, not just a nuisance. 2. Noise pollution is unnecessary sound that is unbearable and uncomfortable and harms people and other living things (key idea below).
⭐ Key idea (textbook page 168)

Noise pollution (ശബ്ദമലിനീകരണം) is the production of unnecessary sound that is unbearable and uncomfortable, in a way that harms humans and other living things.

📒 Causes of noise pollution (ശബ്ദമലിനീകരണത്തിന് കാരണങ്ങൾ)

Air horns and needless honking · vehicles with broken silencers · construction machinery (drills, concrete mixers, cranes) · factories and generators · aircraft and trains · firecrackers · loud music at weddings, festivals and functions · quarrying and blasting.

📒 Effects on health, mind and emotions (സയൻസ് ഡയറി)

– Noise affects not only our physical health but also our mind and emotions.

  • Body: hearing loss and ringing in the ears, headache, high blood pressure, disturbed sleep, tiredness.
  • Mind and emotions: irritation, anger, stress and anxiety, poor concentration in studies and work.
  • Others: babies and patients cannot rest; birds and animals are frightened and leave their homes (fireworks scare pets and birds).
Who suffer most from noise pollution?
Shouldn't noise pollution be controlled?
What can we do to reduce it?
1. Traffic police; workers in factories, mines and construction sites; people living near airports, highways and railway lines; patients in hospitals; babies, elderly people and students. 2. Yes – it harms health and is a public-health problem, so it must be controlled by laws and by each of us. 3. See the list and the sorter below.
🗺 Virtual lab: a noise map of a town (approx. dB values)

All dB values are rough, typical values (approx.) – real levels depend on distance and time. Going further: the decibel scale goes up in steps – every 10 dB more means about 10 times more sound energy, so 90 dB carries about 1000 times the energy of 60 dB.

💡 Going further: legal noise limits in India

Under India's Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000, the limits are (in dB(A), day / night): silence zone 50 / 40, residential 55 / 45, commercial 65 / 55, industrial 75 / 70. Day time is 6 am to 10 pm. Areas within about 100 m of hospitals, schools and courts can be declared silence zones, and loudspeakers may not be used at night (10 pm – 6 am) except in closed halls – just as the textbook says.

3. Reducing noise pollution (Fig 8.20, 8.21)

Measures we can take:

💡 Why these work

Ear muffs and ear plugs block the path of the sound before it reaches the eardrum (Fig 8.20: a worker with a drill wears ear muffs; Fig 8.21: an ear plug fits into the ear canal). A horn-type loudspeaker throws sound far over a whole area; box-type speakers spread a gentler sound over a smaller area, just where the audience is. Trees and hedges absorb and scatter sound, so a green belt beside a road makes the houses behind it quieter. A working silencer lets the exhaust gases out gradually instead of in loud bursts.

🧪 Sort it: does this reduce noise pollution or add to it?
🌴 Kerala connection – festivals, loudspeakers and fireworks

Kerala loves its festivals – Pooram, temple and church feasts, Onam and Vishu. We can enjoy them without harming anyone: keep loudspeakers inside the festival ground and turned towards the audience, stop them by 10 pm, keep fireworks far from hospitals and houses, watch fireworks from a distance, and protect babies', elderly people's and pets' ears.

⚠ Protect your ears: stay far away from firecrackers and loudspeaker towers; cover your ears or use ear plugs near very loud machines; never shout or blow whistles into someone's ear.

– Now we understand the need for environment-friendly use of sound. Pleasant sound is one of nature's best gifts to us; it enriches our leisure.
