Electron Configuration and Shell Diagrams
Electrons do not crowd anywhere they like. Like seats in a bus filled from the front row, they fill the shells in order, following three simple rules. Here you learn the rules, write configurations such as 2, 8, 3, draw orbit diagrams like the textbook's, and watch the shells fill up electron by electron for the first 20 elements.
1. Where are the electrons?
Questions (page 15).
According to the Bohr atom model ബോർ ആറ്റം മാതൃക, where are the electrons found?
Which letters are given to the energy levels 1, 2, 3 and 4?
2. Energy levels 1, 2, 3, 4 are the K, L, M, N shells (and 5 is O).
– The electrons of an atom are arranged in the different orbits according to some rules.
2. The three rules of filling
Rule 1 · 2n²
ഏതൊരു ഓർബിറ്റിലും ഉൾക്കൊള്ളാവുന്ന പരമാവധി ഇലക്ട്രോണുകളുടെ എണ്ണം 2n² ആണ് (n = ഓർബിറ്റ് നമ്പർ).The maximum number of electrons any orbit can hold is 2n², where n is the orbit number.Rule 2 · lower first
Generally, electrons start filling the next energy level only after the lower-energy orbit is full.Rule 3 · outermost ≤ 8
ഏതൊരു ആറ്റത്തിന്റെയും ബാഹ്യ ഓർബിറ്റിൽ ഉൾക്കൊള്ളാവുന്ന പരമാവധി ഇലക്ട്രോണുകളുടെ എണ്ണം 8 ആയിരിക്കും.The outermost orbit ബാഹ്യ ഓർബിറ്റ് of any atom can hold at most 8 electrons.Rule 1 in a table (Table 1.3). Work out 2n² for the M and N shells and type the numbers.
Recording how the electrons fill the orbits of an atom is called its electron configuration ഇലക്ട്രോൺ വിന്യാസം. We write the numbers of electrons in K, L, M, N in order, separated by commas: sodium (11 electrons) → 2, 8, 1.
11 electrons: K takes 2 (full, 2 × 1²), L takes 8 (full, 2 × 2²). That uses 10, so the 11th electron must go to M → 2, 8, 1. Think of a bus where the front row (K) has 2 seats and the second row (L) has 8: passenger number 11 has to sit in the third row.
3. Table 1.4 – configurations of elements 1 to 18
– Let us write the electron configuration of some elements. Complete Table 1.4. Fill the empty boxes; leave a shell box empty (or type –) if that shell has no electrons.
Only for elements with atomic numbers 1 to 18 can the configuration be written exactly by this method. For atomic numbers above 18, the method is learnt in higher classes. (The book's Fig 1.12 does show potassium 2, 8, 8, 1 and calcium 2, 8, 8, 2 – for elements up to 20, the outer shell takes at most 8.)
4. Drawing the orbit diagram (Figs 1.8, 1.9)
– Look at the orbit diagram of hydrogen (Fig 1.8): the nucleus is a disc labelled with the number of protons (p) and neutrons (n); each shell is a circle; each electron is a dot on its circle. Boron (Fig 1.9) has atomic number 5 and mass number 11: 5 protons, 11 − 5 = 6 neutrons, and electrons 2, 3.
Rules for a neat diagram: draw the nucleus first and write "Np / Nn" in it; draw one circle per shell; space the electrons on each circle evenly.
Question (page 17). Draw the orbit electron configuration (orbit diagram) of 2713Al.
First find p, n and e. Then write the configuration with the rules, then draw.
Question (pages 17–18). The orbit diagram of an atom is given. Analyse it and find: atomic number, mass number, number of protons, number of neutrons, electron configuration.
5. Virtual lab: the shell filler (Z = 1 to 20)
Pick an atomic number. Press Fill one by one and watch each electron take its place, with the rule that sends it there.
The slots on the right show 2n² for each shell (K 2, L 8, M 18, N 32). For the first 20 elements M never gets past 8, because the outermost shell holds at most 8 – that is why electron 19 starts the N shell.
6. Activity: orbit diagrams of elements 1–20
– Write the electron configurations of the elements with atomic numbers 1 to 18 and draw their shell diagrams in your science diary. Draw yours first, then compare with this gallery (19 and 20 are added from Fig 1.12).
Neutrons are shown for the commonest atom of each element (for example 3517Cl has 18 neutrons). Look down each column: the number of shells grows by one after 2 (helium), 10 (neon) and 18 (argon).
- Putting 8 electrons in K ✗ – K holds only 2.
- Filling M before L is full ✗ – for 11 electrons it is 2, 8, 1, not 2, 7, 2.
- Putting 9 or more in the outermost shell ✗ – potassium is 2, 8, 8, 1, not 2, 8, 9.
- Drawing the electrons inside the nucleus ✗ – the nucleus has only protons and neutrons.
