Isotopes, Isobars and Isotones
Can two atoms of the same element have different masses? Can atoms of different elements have the same mass number? Yes to both! Here you meet the three hydrogen atoms protium, deuterium and tritium, the carbon atoms used to date fossils, the radioactive isotopes used in hospitals and power stations, and the "same-mass" atoms argon, potassium and calcium. Then sort atom pairs yourself.
1. Which particle decides the element?
Question (page 18). (പ്രോട്ടോൺ/ന്യൂട്രോൺ) The number of which subatomic particle decides which element an atom is? (proton / neutron)
2. The three hydrogen atoms (Fig 1.10, Table 1.5)
– Can you complete Table 1.5 about these atoms?
Questions (page 18).
What is the atomic number of these atoms?
Which element has atomic number 1? – so all three are hydrogen atoms.
In the number of which particle do these atoms differ?
Are their mass numbers the same?
Which of these atoms has no neutron in its nucleus?
2. Atomic number 1 is hydrogen.
3. They differ in the number of neutrons (0, 1, 2).
4. No – the mass numbers are 1, 2 and 3.
5. Protium 11H has no neutron.
Isotopes ഐസോടോപ്പുകൾ are different atoms of the same element having the same atomic number and different mass numbers. (Same protons, different neutrons.) Protium പ്രോട്ടിയം, deuterium ഡ്യൂറ്റീരിയം and tritium ട്രിഷിയം are the isotopes of hydrogen.
3. Properties of isotopes and heavy water
– Isotopes show the same chemical properties രാസസ്വഭാവം (they have the same number of electrons, arranged the same way), but small differences in physical properties ഭൗതിക സ്വഭാവങ്ങൾ such as mass and density (their nuclei have different masses).
Heavy water is the oxide of deuterium, D₂O (each molecule has two ²H atoms instead of two ¹H atoms). It is used in nuclear power stations ആണവ നിലയങ്ങൾ.
Go further: it looks like ordinary water and takes part in the same chemical reactions, but it is about 11 % denser (≈ 1.11 g/cm³), freezes at about 3.8 °C and boils at about 101.4 °C – a small difference in physical properties. India's pressurised heavy-water reactors, for example at Kaiga in Karnataka, use it to slow down neutrons.
4. Isotopes of carbon (Fig 1.11)
– Let us see whether only hydrogen has isotopes. Look at Fig 1.11 and fill in the protons, electrons and neutrons of each atom.
126C, 136C and 146C are the natural isotopes of carbon.
- ¹²C is the most stable and the most abundant carbon isotope.
- ¹³C is only about 1.1 % of all carbon. It is used to study the life processes in plants and animals.
- ¹⁴C is a radioactive isotope It is used to find the age of fossils ഫോസിലുകളുടെ കാലപ്പഴക്കം.
- Only the isotopes of hydrogen have special names. Others are named by mass number: carbon-12, carbon-13, carbon-14.
Values are approximate. ¹⁴C is so rare (about 1 atom in a million million, 10¹²) that you would almost never find one in a sample of 1000 – yet it is enough for dating.
When a plant or animal dies it stops taking in carbon, and the ¹⁴C in it slowly decays (go further: half of it in about 5730 years). By measuring how much ¹⁴C is left in bones, wood or charcoal, scientists find their age. Carbon dating is used for fossils and at archaeological sites like the Pattanam excavations near Kodungallur.
5. Uses of isotopes (Table 1.6)
– Some other isotopes and their uses are given in Table 1.6.
6. Isobars – argon, potassium and calcium (Fig 1.12, Table 1.7)
– Look at the orbit diagrams of argon, potassium and calcium (Fig 1.12). Analyse them and complete Table 1.7.
Questions (page 20).
What is special about the mass numbers of these elements?
Are the atomic numbers equal?
2. No – the atomic numbers are 18, 19 and 20, so they are three different elements.
Isobars ഐസോബാറുകൾ are atoms having the same mass number and different atomic numbers. They are atoms of different elements with the same total number of particles in the nucleus (protons + neutrons).
Atoms with the same number of neutrons are called isotones. Example: 157N (15 − 7 = 8 neutrons) and 146C (14 − 6 = 8 neutrons).
| Isotopes | Isobars | Isotones | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Atomic number Z (protons) | same | different | different |
| Mass number A | different | same | different |
| Neutrons (A − Z) | different | different | same |
| Element | same element | different elements | different elements |
| Example | 126C, 146C | 4018Ar, 4020Ca | 157N, 146C |
Memory trick: isotoPes – same Protons; isotoNes – same Neutrons; isobArs – same mAss number.
7. Virtual lab: the isotope / isobar / isotone sorter
Pick any two atoms from the pool, decide what the pair is, and press your answer. Or let the lab pick a pair for you.
- "Isotopes are different elements" ✗ – isotopes are atoms of the same element; isobars are different elements.
- "Isotopes have different chemical properties" ✗ – their chemical properties are the same; only physical properties differ slightly.
- Writing deuterium as 22H ✗ – hydrogen always has Z = 1: 21H.
