In-text Questions – Solutions ആറ്റത്തിന്റെ ഘടന

Every question asked inside the chapter, in the order of the book, with a model answer and the reason why: Table 1.1, the subatomic particles, the paddle wheel and the shadow, Table 1.2, the Thomson statements and a ready-made scientists quiz, atomic and mass numbers, the 9-row table, Tables 1.3 and 1.4, the orbit diagrams, isotopes (Tables 1.5, Fig 1.11) and isobars (Table 1.7). Try each one in your science diary സയൻസ് ഡയറി first, then open the solution.

📖 What you need (pages 4–10 of this guide)

1 · Atoms in familiar substances (p 7, Table 1.1)

The students in the picture are discussing atom models ആറ്റം മാതൃക. Can you identify the atoms present in familiar substances? Analyse Table 1.1.

Substance പദാർഥംConstituent elements ഘടക മൂലകങ്ങൾChemical formula of the molecule രാസസൂത്രംRatio of numbers of atoms ആറ്റങ്ങളുടെ എണ്ണത്തിന്റെ അനുപാതം
Sugar പഞ്ചസാരcarbon, hydrogen, oxygenC12H22O1112 : 22 : 11
Glucose ഗ്ലൂക്കോസ്carbon, hydrogen, oxygenC6H12O61 : 2 : 1
Water ജലംhydrogen, oxygenH2O2 : 1

Read the symbols in each formula: C = carbon, H = hydrogen, O = oxygen. The small number after a symbol tells how many atoms of it are in one molecule.

Sugar and glucose are made of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms; water of hydrogen and oxygen atoms.
One sugar molecule has 12 C, 22 H and 11 O atoms (12 : 22 : 11). One glucose molecule has 6 C, 12 H and 6 O atoms, 6 : 12 : 6, which simplifies to 1 : 2 : 1 (divide by 6). One water molecule has 2 H and 1 O (2 : 1).
More familiar examples: carbon dioxide CO2 (C, O; 1 : 2), ammonia NH3 (N, H; 1 : 3), methane CH4 (C, H; 1 : 4), common salt NaCl (Na, Cl; 1 : 1).
Key idea (p 8): ഒരു പദാർഥത്തിന്റെ എല്ലാ ഗുണങ്ങളുമുള്ളതും സ്വതന്ത്രാവസ്ഥയിൽ നിലനിൽക്കാൻ കഴിയുന്നതുമായ ഏറ്റവും ചെറിയ കണികയാണ് തന്മാത്ര. A molecule തന്മാത്ര is the smallest particle of a substance that has all the properties of the substance and can exist independently.

2 · How molecules differ, and the particles inside atoms (p 8)

വിവിധ പദാർഥങ്ങളിലെ തന്മാത്രകൾ എങ്ങനെയെല്ലാം വ്യത്യാസപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു? In what ways do the molecules of different substances differ?

ആറ്റങ്ങളിൽ അടങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്ന പ്രധാന കണങ്ങൾ ഏതൊക്കെയാണെന്ന് അറിയാമോ? Do you know the main particles present in atoms? (• electron • …… • ……)

Molecules differ in (i) the constituent elements ഘടക മൂലകങ്ങൾ they contain, and (ii) the ratio of the numbers of atoms ആറ്റങ്ങളുടെ എണ്ണത്തിന്റെ അനുപാതം of those elements. (Glucose and sugar have the same elements but different ratios.)
Main particles in atoms: electron, proton, neutron ഇലക്ട്രോൺ · പ്രോട്ടോൺ · ന്യൂട്രോൺ. They are called subatomic particles സബ്അറ്റോമിക കണങ്ങൾ.

3 · The paddle wheel and the shadow (p 10)

ഇലക്ട്രോണിന് മാസുണ്ടെന്ന് തെളിയിച്ചതെങ്ങനെ? How was it proved that the electron has mass?

കാഥോഡ് രശ്മികളുടെ പാതയിൽ ഒരു അതാര്യ വസ്തു വെച്ചാൽ നിഴൽ ഉണ്ടാകുന്നു. ഇതിൽ നിന്ന് എന്ത് മനസ്സിലാക്കാം? When an opaque object അതാര്യ വസ്തു is placed in the path of cathode rays, a shadow നിഴൽ is formed. What can we understand from this?

A wheel turns only if something with mass pushes it. A sharp shadow forms only if the rays cannot bend round the object.

🎬 Solution animation – Fig 1.3 (paddle wheel) and Fig 1.2 (shadow)

Teacher demonstration only – discharge tubes work at very high voltage.

Mass: a light paddle wheel നേർത്ത ഇതളുകളുള്ള ചക്രം placed in the path of the cathode rays rotates (and moves away from the cathode). Only particles that have mass (and move fast) can push the blades, so the particles of cathode rays – the electrons – have mass.
Shadow: the opaque object casts a sharp shadow of its own shape on the glowing end of the tube. So cathode rays travel in straight lines.

4 · Table 1.2 – the three particles (p 13)

സബ്അറ്റോമിക കണങ്ങളായ ഇലക്ട്രോൺ, പ്രോട്ടോൺ, ന്യൂട്രോൺ എന്നിവയുടെ ചില സവിശേഷതകൾ പട്ടിക 1.2-ൽ കൊടുത്തിരിക്കുന്നു. വിട്ടുപോയ ഭാഗം പൂരിപ്പിച്ച് സയൻസ് ഡയറിയിൽ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തുക. Some properties of the subatomic particles are given in Table 1.2. Fill in the missing parts and record them in your science diary.

Particle കണത്തിന്റെ പേര്Place in the atom ആറ്റത്തിലെ സ്ഥാനംCharge ചാർജ്Mass മാസ്Mass used in practice
proton പ്രോട്ടോൺnucleus+1 (positive)1.00727 u1 u
electron ഇലക്ട്രോൺshells (orbits) around the nucleus−1 (negative)0.000548 u0
neutron ന്യൂട്രോൺnucleus ന്യൂക്ലിയസ്0 (no charge)1.00866 u1 u
Green cells are the answers. u = unified atomic mass unit യൂണിഫൈഡ് അറ്റോമിക് മാസ് യൂണിറ്റ്, the unit used to express the masses of atoms. The mass of an electron is about 1/1837 of the mass of a proton, so in practice we take it as 0.

5 · Which statements are about J. J. Thomson? (p 14)

ചില പ്രസ്താവനകൾ നൽകിയിരിക്കുന്നു. ഇവയിൽ ജെ. ജെ. തോംസണുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട പ്രസ്താവനകൾ ഏതെല്ലാം? Some statements are given. Which of them are connected with J. J. Thomson? Decide for each one.
