Periodic Trends: the Size of Atoms
Why is a caesium atom more than three times as wide as a fluorine atom? Two things fight over the size of every atom: the number of shells, which pushes the outermost electrons further out, and the nuclear charge, which pulls them in. On this page you measure atomic radius, walk down group 1 and across period 2 with atoms drawn to scale, see how inner electrons screen the nucleus, compare any two atoms in the size lab, and find where the largest and the smallest atoms live.
- Atomic number = number of protons = number of electrons in the atom; electrons are arranged in shells K, L, M, N … (page 2).
- Period number = number of shells; in a period the outermost electrons increase by one from left to right (page 6).
- Unlike charges attract: the positive nucleus attracts the negative electrons.
1. Periodic trends
The chemical and physical properties of elements change gradually according to their position in a group and in a period. You already know that as the atomic number changes, the electron configuration (ഇലക്ട്രോൺ വിന്യാസം) and the number of shells (ഷെല്ലുകളുടെ എണ്ണം) change too. A regular, step-by-step change of a property along a group or a period is called a periodic trend. The first one we study is the size of atoms.
2. Size of an atom and atomic radius
Atoms are extremely tiny particles, yet the nature of an element is closely connected with the size of its atoms (ആറ്റത്തിന്റെ വലിപ്പം).
One way of stating the size of an atom is its atomic radius (അറ്റോമിക ആരം): the distance from the centre of the nucleus to the outermost shell that contains electrons.
Atomic radii are tiny: they are measured in picometres (1 pm = 10−12 m). The values on this page are approximate covalent radii (go further – there are several ways of measuring the radius, and they give slightly different numbers).
Two main factors affect the size of an atom:
⊕ Nuclear charge
The positive charge of the nucleus = number of protons = atomic number. More nuclear charge → stronger force of attraction (ആകർഷണബലം) on the outermost electrons → they are pulled in → smaller atom.◎ Number of shells ഷെല്ലുകളുടെ എണ്ണം
Each new shell lies further out from the nucleus. More shells → the outermost electrons are further away → bigger atom.3. Down a group – Table 2.11
Some elements of group 1 are given in Table 2.11. Fill in the number of shells from the configurations and check.
What happens to the number of shells as we come down a group?
How does the increase in the number of shells affect the size of the atom?
The nuclear charge depends on the number of protons in the nucleus.
What change happens to the number of protons when the atomic number increases?
Then what happens to the nuclear charge as the atomic number increases?
When the nuclear charge increases, the attraction of the nucleus on the outermost electrons increases.
Then what change would happen to the size of the atom?
• More shells → the outermost electrons are further from the nucleus → the size of the atom increases.
• When the atomic number increases, the number of protons increases (Li 3 → Na 11 → K 19 → Rb 37).
• So the nuclear charge increases with atomic number.
• A larger nuclear charge pulls the outermost electrons more strongly – by itself this would make the atom smaller. But down a group the extra shells win (key idea below): the atoms actually get bigger.
Coming down a group, the nuclear charge increases; but the number of shells increases in a way that overcomes its effect, so the size of the atom increases.
Coming down a group the number of shells increases, so the outermost electrons move further away from the nucleus. As the number of electrons in the inner shells increases, the attraction of the nucleus on the electrons of the outermost shell decreases step by step. This is called the screening effect (shielding effect): the inner electrons stand like a screen between the nucleus and the outermost electrons.
The thickness of the pull arrow is qualitative – it shows "stronger" or "weaker", not a measured value. Atom sizes in this animation are not to scale.
4. Across a period – Table 2.12
The electron configurations of the elements of period 2 are given below (Table 2.12). Add two rows of your own – the number of shells and the nuclear charge – and check.
Do you see any change in the number of shells as you go from left to right in the period?
Does the nuclear charge increase?
Going from left to right in a period, the nuclear charge increases but the number of shells does not change.
(കൂടുന്നു/ കുറയുന്നു) What change happens to the force of attraction of the nucleus on the outermost electrons? (increases / decreases)
Then what change happens to the size of the atom?
• Yes – the nuclear charge increases by +1 at each step: +3 (Li), +4, +5, +6, +7, +8, +9 (F).
• The attraction of the nucleus on the outermost electrons increases (കൂടുന്നു).
• So the size of the atom decreases: lithium is the largest and fluorine the smallest atom of the row (about 134 pm → 71 pm, approx.).
Going from left to right in a period, the number of shells does not change. But the nuclear charge gradually increases, the attraction of the nucleus on the outermost electrons increases, and so the size of the atom gradually decreases.
5. The size lab – compare any two atoms
All radii are approximate covalent radii in picometres. Noble gases are treated separately (their radii are measured in a different way), so we do not rank them here.
6. Where are the largest and the smallest atoms?
You have seen how the size of atoms changes in a group and in a period.
Then where in the periodic table will the atoms of generally larger size be?
Where are the atoms of generally smaller size found?
• Generally smaller atoms are at the top right – towards group 17 in the upper periods (fluorine is the smallest of the atoms we compared, except hydrogen).
(Hydrogen, with only one shell, is the smallest atom of all. The noble gases of group 18 are treated separately and are not ranked here.)
Coming down a group, the size of the atom increases. Going from left to right in a period, the size of the atom generally decreases.

You will study other periodic trends such as ionisation energy (അയോണീകരണ ഊർജം) and electronegativity (ഇലക്ട്രോനെഗറ്റിവിറ്റി) in the next unit. Atomic size is the key to both – keep this page in mind!

7. Check yourself
- Atomic radius = distance from the centre of the nucleus to the outermost shell. Two factors decide the size: nuclear charge (pulls electrons in) and number of shells (pushes the outer electrons out).
- Down a group: shells increase (and the inner electrons screen the nucleus – screening effect), which outweighs the rising nuclear charge → atoms get bigger.
- Across a period: shells stay the same, nuclear charge increases → stronger pull on the outer electrons → atoms get smaller.
- Largest atoms: bottom left (group 1, lower periods); smallest: top right (towards group 17, upper periods). Noble gases are treated separately.
