1 · Mendeleev's periodic table – merits, limitations, isotopes (p 24)
List the merits (മേന്മകൾ) of Mendeleev's periodic table.
You also know some limitations (പരിമിതികൾ) of Mendeleev's periodic table. What are they?
How do the isotopes of the same element differ from each other?
• He arranged all the elements known then in the increasing order of atomic mass.
• Elements with similar properties were placed in the same group.
• He left gaps for elements not yet discovered and predicted their properties (go further: "eka-aluminium" became gallium and "eka-silicon" became germanium).
• He corrected the atomic masses of some elements.
• The noble gases, discovered later, could be added as a separate group without disturbing the table.
Limitations
• Isotopes got no separate places, although they have different atomic masses.
• The increasing order of atomic mass was not followed everywhere – argon (40) is placed before potassium (39).
• Elements with different properties were put in one group – soft, very reactive sodium and potassium together with copper and silver.
• (Go further: the position of hydrogen was uncertain.)
Isotopes of an element have the same number of protons (same atomic number) but a different number of neutrons, so their mass numbers (and atomic masses) differ – e.g. 11H, 21H, 31H with 0, 1 and 2 neutrons.
2 · Modern periodic law and the merits of the modern table (pp 24–25)
Let us see what the merits of the modern periodic table are.
• Elements are arranged by atomic number, and all the isotopes of an element have the same atomic number – so isotopes need no separate places.
• The atomic-mass disorder (argon 40 before potassium 39) is no longer a problem: Ar (18) comes before K (19) by atomic number.
3 · Periods, groups and the information in a cell (pp 27–28)
Analyse the modern periodic table (Fig 2.1) and answer:

3. In 10 groups (3, 4, 5, … 12).
| Table 2.6 | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Element | Symbol | Atomic number | Electron configuration | Group number |

3. From period 4 (the first is scandium, Sc, atomic number 21).
4. They lie between the highly metallic elements (groups 1, 2) and the less metallic elements (groups 13–18). They show the gradual change – transition (സംക്രമണം) – from the highly metallic group 2 elements to the less metallic elements from group 13 onwards; that is why groups 3–12 are called transition elements. (Group 12 – Zn, Cd, Hg – is usually counted with them, though strictly they are not; higher classes.)
14 · Table 2.9 – where does the new electron go? (pp 34–35)
Table 2.9 (period 4): K 2,8,8,1 · Ca 2,8,8,2 · Sc 2,8,9,2 · Ti 2,8,10,2 · V 2,8,11,2.

2. Yes, the same happens in groups 6–12 (from Fig 2.1):
| Group | Element | Atomic number | Electron configuration | 3rd shell | Outermost |
|---|
3. Sc, Ti and V all have 2 outermost electrons – the same number. Transition elements in a period generally have the same number of outermost electrons (mostly 2, sometimes 1, as in Cr and Cu), so they show similarity in chemical properties along the period too.

What happens to the number of shells down a group?
How does the increase in the number of shells affect the size of the atom?
What happens to the number of protons when the atomic number increases?
Then what happens to the nuclear charge?
Then what change will happen to the size of the atom (due to the larger attraction)?
3. The number of protons increases. 4. The nuclear charge increases.
5. The stronger attraction on the outermost electrons would, by itself, decrease the size. But down a group the increase in the number of shells outweighs it, so overall the size of atoms increases down a group (animation: page 9).
19 · Table 2.12 – size across a period; largest and smallest atoms (p 39)
Table 2.12, period 2: Li 2,1 · Be 2,2 · B 2,3 · C 2,4 · N 2,5 · O 2,6 · F 2,7.
Is there any change in the number of shells from left to right?
Does the nuclear charge increase?

Where will the generally larger atoms be?
Where are the generally smaller atoms found?
3. The attraction increases (കൂടുന്നു). 4. The size decreases from left to right.
5. Larger atoms: bottom left of the table (lower part of group 1). 6. Smaller atoms: top right (towards group 17, upper periods). (Noble gases are treated separately.)
Key idea: down a group the size of atoms increases; across a period from left to right it generally decreases (size lab: page 9).
