Chapter 2 · Let us assessTextbook pages 40–42

Let Us Assess & Extended Activities – Solutions

All nine end-of-chapter questions with model answers. Each one is worked out with two rules: the number of shells gives the period, and the outermost electrons give the group (add 10 for groups 13–18). Step-by-step animations draw the atoms and light up their place in the table. Question 7 has the book's partial table, where you can swap the letters for the real symbols. After the questions come the five extended activities തുടർപ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ: a letters game, short biographies for your science magazine, a blank table to print, the table of elements 1–36, and printable cards for a cardboard periodic table.

📖 What you need (pages 5–9 of this guide)

“പ്രതീകം യഥാർഥമല്ല” means “the symbol is not the real one”. The letters are only labels, so never write them as real symbols. Parts marked go further are beyond the textbook.

Question 1 · Configuration, period and group of six atoms

The symbols of some elements are given. Write their electron configuration ഇലക്ട്രോൺ വിന്യാസം and find the period and group each belongs to.

a) 2311Na   b) 2713Al   c) 3517Cl   d) 168O   e) 2010Ne   f) 126C

The small number at the bottom is the atomic number, which is the number of electrons. Fill the shells 2, then 8, then the rest. Count the shells for the period. Look at the last number for the group.

🎬 Step by step – six atoms, two rules
ElementZElectron configurationShells → periodOutermost electrons → group
a) Na112, 8, 13 → period 31 → group 1
b) Al132, 8, 33 → period 33 + 10 → group 13
c) Cl172, 8, 73 → period 37 + 10 → group 17
d) O82, 62 → period 26 + 10 → group 16
e) Ne102, 82 → period 28 + 10 → group 18
f) C62, 42 → period 24 + 10 → group 14
The mass number (the top number) is not needed to find the period or the group.
⚠️ Common slip

Add 10 only for groups 13–18. Sodium has 1 outermost electron and is in group 1, not group 11.

Question 2 · Element X: 2, 8, 8, 1

The electron configuration of element X is 2, 8, 8, 1 (X is not the real symbol).

What is the atomic number അറ്റോമിക നമ്പർ of X?
To which group does this element belong?
What is its period number?
To which family of elements മൂലക കുടുംബങ്ങൾ does it belong?
Write the electron configuration of the noble gas that comes just before this element.
🎬 Step by step – reading 2, 8, 8, 1
(a) Atomic number = total electrons = 2 + 8 + 8 + 1 = 19.
(b) 1 outermost electron → group 1.
(c) 4 shells → period 4.
(d) Group 1 → alkali metals ആൽക്കലി ലോഹങ്ങൾ.
(e) The noble gas just before Z = 19 has Z = 18. That is argon, 2, 8, 8.
(X is really potassium, K.)

Question 3 · Three shells, seven outermost electrons

(പ്രതീകം യഥാർഥമല്ല) The atom of element P has 3 shells. Its outermost shell ബാഹ്യതമ ഷെൽ contains 7 electrons (P is not the real symbol).

Write the electron configuration of P.
What is its atomic number?
In which period is this element?
In which group is this element?
Draw the atom model of this element.

If electrons have reached the third shell, the first two shells are already full.

🎬 Step by step – building the atom of P
(a) The K and L shells must be full before the M shell starts: 2, 8, 7.
(b) Atomic number = 2 + 8 + 7 = 17.
(c) 3 shells → period 3.
(d) 7 outermost electrons → 7 + 10 = group 17 (the halogens).
(e) Atom model: a nucleus marked 17p, with three circles around it carrying 2, 8 and 7 electrons (the last step of the animation). The number of neutrons is not given, so write only 17p.
(P is really chlorine, Cl.)
⚠️ How to draw it in the exam

Draw the nucleus in the centre and write 17p inside it. Draw three circles and put the electrons on the circles: 2 on the first, 8 on the second, 7 on the third.

Question 4 · Element M: period 3, group 1

4. 3-ാം പീരിയഡിലും 1-ാം ഗ്രൂപ്പിലും ഉൾപ്പെട്ട മൂലകമാണ് M. (പ്രതീകം യഥാർഥമല്ല) M is an element in period 3 and group 1 (M is not the real symbol).

Write the electron configuration of this element.
Write its name and symbol.
To which family does it belong?
Write the electron configuration of the element in the same period and in group 13.
🎬 Step by step – working backwards from the position
(a) Period 3 → 3 shells; group 1 → 1 outermost electron. So 2, 8, 1.
(b) Z = 11: sodium, Na.
(c) Alkali metals (group 1).
(d) Same period → still 3 shells; group 13 → 13 − 10 = 3 outermost electrons. So 2, 8, 3 (aluminium, Al).

Question 5 · P, Q, R and S

The electron configurations of P, Q, R and S are given below (the symbols are not real).

P – 2, 7    Q – 2, 8    R – 2, 8, 1    S – 2, 8, 7

Which of these elements are in the same period?
Which elements are in the same group?
Which of these is a noble gas?
Find the group number and period number of S.
🎬 Step by step – place the letters in the table first
ConfigurationPeriod (shells)Group
P2, 727 + 10 = 17
Q2, 828 + 10 = 18
R2, 8, 131
S2, 8, 737 + 10 = 17
(a) Same period: P and Q (period 2), and R and S (period 3).
(b) Same group: P and S (both have 7 outermost electrons, group 17).
(c) Noble gas: Q (its outermost shell is full with 8 electrons).
(d) S: group 17, period 3.
(Really P = F, Q = Ne, R = Na, S = Cl.)

Question 6 · Which atom is bigger?

The electron configurations of some elements are given (the symbols are not real).

A – 2, 1    B – 2, 8, 1    C – 2, 8, 7

Of A and B, which atom is bigger?
Of B and C, which is bigger?
🎬 Step by step – shells and nuclear charge

Sizes are drawn roughly to scale (approx. radii: A 134 pm, B 154 pm, C 99 pm). You only need the reasons, not the numbers.

(a) B is bigger. A (2, 1) and B (2, 8, 1) are in the same group (group 1). B has 3 shells and A has only 2. Down a group the number of shells increases, so the size increases.
(b) B is bigger. B (2, 8, 1) and C (2, 8, 7) are in the same period (period 3, 3 shells each). C has the larger nuclear charge (17 protons against 11), so it pulls its outermost electrons closer. Across a period the size decreases, so C is smaller and B is bigger.

Question 7 · A part of the modern periodic table

(പ്രതീകങ്ങൾ യഥാർഥമല്ല) A part of the modern periodic table ആധുനിക പീരിയോഡിക് ടേബിൾ is given. Answer the questions below (the symbols are not real).

Which elements belong to the halogen family?
Which are the transition elements?
Write the group 1 elements in decreasing order of atomic size.
Of B and I, which atom is smaller?
Write the given period-3 elements in increasing order of atomic size.
Which of these are alkaline earth metals?
Which element has 8 electrons in its outermost shell?
Using the periodic table, find and write the real symbols of the given elements.
🔍 The book's partial table – tap a part to see its answer
Tap a part (a–h) or any lettered box.

The layout follows the figure on textbook page 41: rows are periods 1–4, numbers on top are group numbers. Scroll sideways on a phone.

(a) Halogens (group 17): M, N.
(b) Transition elements (groups 3–12): G, H.
(c) Group 1, decreasing size (size grows down a group): D > C > B > A.
(d) B and I are in period 2. I is further to the right (more nuclear charge, same 2 shells), so I is smaller.
(e) The period-3 elements given are C, F, J and N. Size decreases from left to right, so in increasing order: N < J < F < C.
(f) Alkaline earth metals (group 2): E, F.
(g) 8 outermost electrons: O (group 18, period 2; helium has only 2, and the group 18 box of period 1 has no letter).
(h) Real symbols: A = H, B = Li, C = Na, D = K, E = Be, F = Mg, G = Cr, H = Fe, I = B, J = Al, K = N, L = O, M = F, N = Cl, O = Ne.
🔎 Why A is listed in group 1

Hydrogen (A) has 1 electron, so the book puts it at the top of group 1. It is a non-metal gas, though, and not an alkali metal. Its position was a problem even in Mendeleev's table. In part (c) include A, because the question asks for the group 1 elements in the figure.

Question 8 · Period 2, two outermost electrons

The atom of an element in period 2 has only 2 electrons in its outermost shell.

Write the electron configuration of this element.
Write the electron configuration of the noble gas in the same period.
What is the group number of this element?
Write the electron configuration of the element in the same group and in the third period.
🎬 Step by step – 2 shells, 2 outer electrons
(a) Period 2 → 2 shells, with 2 electrons in the outermost one: 2, 2 (beryllium, Be).
(b) The noble gas of period 2 has a full second shell: 2, 8 (neon, Ne).
(c) 2 outermost electrons → group 2.
(d) Same group (2 outermost electrons), period 3 (3 shells): 2, 8, 2 (magnesium, Mg).

Question 9 · From mass number and neutrons

Study the table and answer the questions (hint: the symbols are not real).

Find and write the atomic numbers of these elements.
Write their electron configurations.
Which of these is a noble gas?

In which period and group is element C?
Which elements are in the same period?
🎬 Step by step – Z = mass number − neutrons
Z = A − nConfigurationPeriodGroup
A9 − 5 = 42, 222
B35 − 18 = 172, 8, 7317
C39 − 20 = 192, 8, 8, 141
D40 − 22 = 182, 8, 8318
(c) Noble gas: D (outermost shell full with 8).
(d) B has 7 outermost electrons (group 17): halogens ഹാലൊജനുകൾ.
(e) C: period 4, group 1.
(f) Same period: B and D (period 3, 3 shells each).
(Really A = Be, B = Cl, C = K, D = Ar.)
⚠️ Common slip

Never use the mass number as the number of electrons. First find Z = mass number − neutrons, then write the configuration.

Extended activity 1 · Two letters no symbol uses

Two letters of the English alphabet have not yet been used in the symbols of elements. Find them with the help of the periodic table.

🔤 Letters game – guess, then scan all the symbols

First tap the two letters you think are unused (they get a “?”). Then press Scan. Every symbol in the table is read, and its letters turn green.

Tap a letter to mark your guess.
The two letters are J and Q. No element symbol contains either of them, as the first letter or the second. Every other letter of the alphabet appears in at least one symbol.

Extended activity 2 · Biographies for the science magazine

Prepare short biographies of the scientists connected with the classification of elements and publish them in the science magazine.

Here are notes for five scientists, in the order of history. Facts marked book are in your textbook. Facts marked go further are extra, for an interesting magazine article.

✍️ Writing your magazine note
  1. Begin with a hook, for example: “He left empty boxes in his table, and other scientists later found the elements to fill them.”
  2. Give the name, the years, the country and the main idea in two or three sentences.
  3. Draw a small picture of the idea: a triad, eight musical notes, a table with gaps, or an X-ray tube.
  4. End with why it matters today, in one line.
  5. Write it in your own words. Copying a long paragraph from a book is not a biography.
The man who left gaps. (1834–1907) was a Russian chemist. In 1869 he arranged the elements known at that time in the increasing order of their atomic masses. He found that their properties repeat at regular intervals, and he stated this as the periodic law. He boldly left empty places for elements nobody had found yet and predicted their properties. When gallium and germanium were discovered, they matched his predictions. Today's table, arranged by atomic number, grew out of his work.

Extended activity 3 · Draw a model of the modern periodic table

Draw a model of the modern periodic table and display it in class.

Extended activity 4 · The table of elements 1 to 36

Using Kalzium software, prepare a table of the elements with atomic numbers 1 to 36 showing the symbol, electron configuration and physical state.

The book suggests the free program Kalzium. If you do not have it, the table below gives the same information. It is made from this guide's own periodic table (Fig 2.1), so the configurations are exactly the ones in your textbook.

📋 Elements 1–36: symbol, configuration and state
Elements with atomic numbers 1 to 36
gasliquidsolid(physical state at room temperature, as coloured in Fig 2.1)
🔎 Two things to notice go further

From Z = 21 onwards the second-last shell keeps filling (for example, iron is 2, 8, 14, 2). You will learn the rules for this in higher classes, so copy those configurations from the table. Fig 2.1 colours gallium (31) as a liquid. It is a soft metal that melts at about 30 °C, so it melts in your hand. Bromine (35) is a true liquid at room temperature.

Extended activity 5 · A cardboard periodic table in class

As in the picture at the start of this unit, make a periodic table in class using pieces of cardboard.

🛠️ How to do it as a class
  1. Cut squares of cardboard, about 8 cm × 8 cm. One square is one element. Share the elements out so that each student makes a few.
  2. On each square write the atomic number (top left), the symbol (big, in the middle), the name and the electron configuration. Or print the cards below and paste them on.
  3. Colour the edges with the book's key: gases, liquids and artificial elements.
  4. On a wall or a large chart, mark 18 columns and 7 rows. Ask each student: “How many shells? Which period? How many outermost electrons? Which group?” Then they stick their card in place.
  5. Put the lanthanoid and actinoid cards in two rows underneath.
  6. Finally, check every column. Do all the cards in a group have the same number of outermost electrons?

Use a blunt-tipped pair of scissors and let an adult handle the cutter.

🖨️ Printable element cards

Six cards per row on A4. Cut along the lines and paste each card on a piece of cardboard.

🔑 The two rules that answered everything on this page

Period number = number of shells. Group number = outermost electrons (groups 1, 2), or outermost electrons + 10 (groups 13–18). Then the families and the size trends follow from the position.
