Writing Formulae: Compounds, Acids, Bases & Salts

With valency in your hand you can write the formula of almost any simple compound yourself – no memorising. Watch magnesium fluoride form, learn the four-step criss-cross method with aluminium oxide and carbon dioxide, then use the same idea with ions to write acids, bases and salts such as Mg₃(PO₄)₂. Every textbook table can be filled in and checked here, and the criss-cross formula machine at the end does any combination you choose.

📖 What you need

1. What a chemical formula tells you

– You have already met compounds written with element symbols: sodium chloride NaCl, calcium chloride CaCl2, aluminium oxide Al2O3.

A chemical formula shows, with element symbols, the number of atoms in a molecule. The small number written low on the right is the subscript പാദാങ്കം: Al2O3 has 2 Al and 3 O. No subscript means 1.

2. Magnesium fluoride (Table 3.7)

– Complete Table 3.7 about the combination of magnesium (Mg) and fluorine (F). In the last column type the number (you may also write “gives 2”).

✍ Table 3.7

Question (page 60). How many fluorine atoms are needed to take the electrons given away by magnesium?

– When magnesium fluoride forms, one magnesium atom combines with two fluorine atoms, so its formula is MgF2.

🎬 One Mg, two F – watch the electrons

3. From valency to formula: aluminium oxide

– Let us see how the formula is found from the valencies of the atoms.

Questions (page 60).

What are the constituent elements of aluminium oxide?
13) What is the valency of aluminium? (atomic number 13)
8) What is the valency of oxygen? (atomic number 8)
1. Aluminium (Al) and oxygen (O).
2. Al: 2, 8, 3 → gives 3 electrons → valency 3.
3. O: 2, 6 → takes 2 electrons → valency 2.

– Write the symbols side by side with the less electronegative element first (AlO). Then swap the valencies and write them as subscripts → Al2O3.

🎬 Criss-cross: Al₂O₃

4. Carbon dioxide: divide by the common factor

Questions (page 61). See how the formula of carbon dioxide is found.

What are the constituent elements of carbon dioxide?
Considering electronegativity, write their symbols side by side.
The valency of carbon is 4 and of oxygen 2. Swap the valencies and write them as subscripts.
1. Carbon (C) and oxygen (O).
2. C (2.55) is less electronegative than O (3.44) → CO.
3. C2O4.

– Divide the subscripts by their common factor: C2/2O4/2 = C1O2. A subscript 1 is not written, so the formula is CO2.

🎬 Criss-cross: CO₂
⭐ The criss-cross method in four steps
  1. Write the symbols side by side – the less electronegative element (usually the metal) first.
  2. Write each valency above its symbol and swap them: each becomes the subscript of the other symbol.
  3. Divide both subscripts by their common factor (Mg2O2 → MgO, C2O4 → CO2).
  4. Omit 1 – a subscript 1 is not written.

5. Find the formulae (? box, page 61)

The table gives the constituent elements of some compounds and the valency of their atoms. Find the formulae and record them in your science diary. Type a formula with ordinary digits – K2O – the preview shows it as K2O.

✍ Formulae from valencies

6. Formulae of acids (Table 3.8)

– In water, acids ആസിഡ് usually set free hydrogen ions (H+), and alkalis ആൽക്കലി set free hydroxyl or hydroxide ions (OH−).

– Acids and bases ബേസ് react to give a salt ലവണം and water; this is a neutralisation reaction നിർവീരീകരണ രാസപ്രവർത്തനം.

Question (page 62). Which ions are obtained from hydrochloric acid? Why is it a monobasic acid?

HCl gives H+ and Cl−. One molecule gives only one H+ ion, so it is monobasic ഏകബേസിക. One H+ and one Cl− balance (+1 − 1 = 0), so the formula is HCl.

– Sulphuric acid gives H+ and SO42−; it is a dibasic ദ്വിബേസിക acid, so its formula is H2SO4. The number of H+ ions one molecule can give is its basicity ബേസികത – and it is equal to the charge on the negative ion.

🔬 Acids split into ions

SO42−, PO43−, NO3−, CO32− are radicals റാഡിക്കൽ: groups of atoms that stay together and carry one charge.

Table 3.8 gives the negative ion and basicity of some acids. Write their formulae (H first, then the negative ion).

✍ Table 3.8 – formulae of acids

7. Formulae of bases

– Alkalis are bases that dissolve in water. An alkali has as many OH− ions as the charge on its positive ion.

Questions (page 62).

What is the positive ion in sodium hydroxide?
Equal to the positive charge of the sodium ion, how many OH− ions are there in sodium hydroxide?
Then what is the formula of sodium hydroxide?
1. Na+ (sodium ion). 2. 1 OH−. 3. NaOH.
🔬 Bases: one OH⁻ for each positive charge
🧠 Why the brackets?

OH is one group (a radical). When there are two or more of them, put the group in brackets and write the number outside: Ca(OH)2 means Ca + 2 × OH = 1 Ca, 2 O, 2 H. Writing “CaOH2” would mean one O and two H – wrong!

The table gives the positive ion of some bases. Find the formulae and complete the table.

✍ Formulae of bases

Note: NaOH, KOH and (slightly) Ca(OH)2 dissolve in water – they are alkalis. Al(OH)3, Fe(OH)3 and Cu(OH)2 hardly dissolve: they are bases but not alkalis.

8. Formulae of salts

– In neutralisation an acid and a base give a salt and water. The salt is made of the positive ion of the base and the negative ion of the acid. For example, NaOH and HCl give NaCl:

🎬 Neutralisation: NaOH + HCl → NaCl + H₂O

– Salts are electrically neutral വൈദ്യുതപരമായി നിർവീര്യം: the ions combine in such numbers that the charges add up to zero.

⭐ Key idea (textbook page 63)

In a salt, the total of the charges of the positive ions and the negative ions is zero.

✍ Writing the formula of a salt (page 63)
Write the symbol of the positive ion first, then the negative ion.
Swap the numbers showing the charges of the ions/radicals and write them as subscripts.
Simplify the subscripts to the smallest whole-number ratio.

Magnesium phosphate

Questions (page 64).

What is the positive ion in magnesium hydroxide, Mg(OH)2?
What is the negative ion in phosphoric acid (H3PO4)?
To write the formula, first write the positive ion, then the negative ion.
Swap the numbers showing the charge of each ion and write them as subscripts.
1. Mg2+. 2. PO43−. 3. Mg PO4. 4. 3 goes to Mg, 2 goes to PO4 (in brackets): Mg3(PO4)2 – magnesium phosphate. Check: 3 × (+2) + 2 × (−3) = 6 − 6 = 0.
🎬 Criss-cross with ions: Mg₃(PO₄)₂

Calcium sulphate

Questions (page 64).

What is the positive ion in calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2?
What is the negative ion in sulphuric acid (H2SO4)?
  3. Write the positive ion first, then the negative ion.
  4. Swap the numbers showing the charges and write them as subscripts.
1. Ca2+. 2. SO42−. 3. Ca SO4. 4. Ca2(SO4)2; divide by 2: Ca2/2(SO4)2/2 = Ca1(SO4)1 = CaSO4 (brackets and 1s dropped).
🎬 Criss-cross with ions: CaSO₄

9. Virtual lab: the criss-cross formula machine

Choose a mode and two partners. The machine writes the symbols (less electronegative first, or positive ion first), swaps the valencies or charge numbers, divides by the common factor, drops the 1s, puts radicals in brackets, names the compound and checks that the charges add up to zero. Then test yourself with the practice bank.
