📖 Where each topic is explained

1 · Elements and compounds – Tables 3.1 and 3.2 (pp 43–44)

What could be the reason why atoms and molecules stay together in elements and compounds?

Sort these substances into elements മൂലകം and compounds സംയുക്തം (Table 3.1): potassium, oxygen, water, common salt, nitrogen, helium, hydrogen, sugar.

The force of attraction ആകർഷണബലം between the constituent particles ഘടക കണങ്ങൾ holds them together (p 43).
Table 3.1
Element മൂലകംCompound സംയുക്തം
Potassium പൊട്ടാസ്യംWater ജലം
Oxygen ഓക്സിജൻCommon salt കറിയുപ്പ്
Nitrogen നൈട്രജൻSugar പഞ്ചസാര
Helium
Hydrogen
An element is made of one kind of atom; a compound of two or more kinds combined chemically (water H2O, common salt NaCl, sugar C12H22O11).

A hydrogen molecule has two atoms. How many atoms are there in one molecule of each substance below? (Table 3.2 – add up the subscripts; no subscript means 1.)

• They are held by a chemical bond രാസബന്ധനം – a force of attraction between the particles.
• Atoms combine to become stable സ്ഥിരത: to get 8 electrons in the outermost shell (octet) – or 2 (duplet) for hydrogen – like the noble gases.
• By transferring electrons (ionic bond, e.g. NaCl) or by sharing electron pairs (covalent bond, e.g. H2, H2O).
• No – metals and non-metals usually combine by electron transfer; non-metals with each other by sharing.
• No – noble gases already have a stable outermost shell and do not usually combine.
• One – noble-gas molecules are monatomic (He, Ne, Ar …).

2 · Noble gases and the octet – Table 3.3 (p 45)

How many electrons are there in the outermost shell of the noble gases other than helium?

Table 3.3
Element (symbol)Atomic numberElectron configurationOutermost electrons
Helium (He) ഹീലിയം222
Neon (Ne)
Argon (Ar)
Krypton (Kr) ക്രിപ്റ്റോൺ362, 8, 18, 88
Xenon (Xe) സീനോൺ542, 8, 18, 18, 88
Radon (Rn) റാഡോൺ862, 8, 18, 32, 18, 88
8 electrons. Key idea: having 8 electrons in the outermost shell, as in the noble gases, is the octet configuration അഷ്ടകവിന്യാസം. Such atoms are stable and reluctant to react – so noble gases are also called inert gases അലസവാതകങ്ങൾ. Helium's only shell holds at most 2 – its duplet രണ്ട് ഇലക്ട്രോൺ സംവിധാനം is just as stable.

3 · Magnesium and oxygen – Table 3.4 (p 46)

Table 3.4: magnesium മഗ്നീഷ്യം 12 – 2, 8, 2 · oxygen ഓക്സിജൻ 8 – 2, 6.

What is the way to gain stability?
What is the name of the compound they form?
1. No – their outermost shells have 2 and 6 electrons, not 8.
2. Magnesium gives away its 2 outermost electrons (→ 2, 8) and oxygen takes 2 (→ 2, 8): both reach the octet.
3. Magnesium oxide (MgO). Key idea: the force that holds the constituent particles together in a compound is the chemical bond

4 · Sodium chloride: sodium and chlorine atoms (pp 46–47)

What are the constituent elements of sodium chloride?
Write the electron configuration of sodium (Z = 11).

🖼 Electron dot diagrams: Cl, and Fig 3.4 (NaCl)
Only the outermost electrons are drawn: chlorine (2, 8, 7) gets 7 dots – three pairs and one single. In NaCl the single place is filled by sodium's electron (red ×): [Na]+ (2, 8) and [Cl]− (2, 8, 8).

Observe Fig 3.4 and Fig 3.3, complete Table 3.5 and record it. Charges: type 0, +1 or −1.

Sodium loses 1 electron: 11 → 10 electrons, protons stay 11, charge 0 → +1. Chlorine gains 1: 17 → 18 electrons, protons stay 17, charge 0 → −1. Na → Na+ + 1e−; Cl + 1e− → Cl−. Positive ions are cations കാറ്റയോൺ, negative ions anions ആനയോൺ; the electrostatic attraction between them is the ionic bond അയോണിക ബന്ധനം (electrovalent bond).

6 · Magnesium oxide – Table 3.6 (pp 50–51)

You may have seen magnesium ribbon burn in air. Which compound is formed?

Examine Fig 3.5 and complete Table 3.6.

Magnesium oxide, MgO: 2Mg + O2 → 2MgO (a dazzling white light – never look straight at burning magnesium).
Table 3.6: Mg 2, 8, 2 → 2, 8; electrons 12 → 10; protons 12 → 12; charge 0 → +2. O 2, 6 → 2, 8; electrons 8 → 10; protons 8 → 8; charge 0 → −2.
1. Mg2+ and O2−. 2. 2 electrons. Compounds formed by ionic bonds are ionic (electrovalent) compounds

7 · The fluorine molecule (pp 51–52)

H2, O2, N2, F2, Cl2 are diatomic molecules ദ്വയാറ്റോമിക തന്മാത്ര. Why do their atoms stay together?

The atoms are held by a bond formed by sharing electrons.
1. F (9p 10n): 2, 7 → 7. 2. 1 more.
3. Not possible – both atoms need one electron and neither will give one away. Instead each puts one electron into a shared pair; the pair belongs to both, so each F counts 8 (Fig 3.7).
4. 1 electron each. 5. 1 pair. A covalent bond formed by sharing one pair of electrons is a single bond ഏകബന്ധനം: F–F.

8 · Oxygen and nitrogen molecules (p 53)

What is the atomic number of oxygen?
Write the electron configuration of oxygen.

2. H–Cl (one shared pair, a single bond).
3. H· + F (7) → H:F with three more pairs on F → H–F.
4. 2 covalent (single) bonds: H–O–H. Compounds formed by covalent bonds are covalent compounds സഹസംയോജക സംയുക്തങ്ങൾ; non-metals combining usually give covalent compounds.
🧪 “Make the molecules with the Ghemical software” (side boxes, pp 48–57)

The book suggests building NaCl, F2, O2, N2, HCl, H2O, CO, HF and NH3 with Ghemical. The offline labs of this guide do the same: the electron-transfer lab (page 4), the covalent overlap builder (page 6) and the polarity labs (page 8).

10 · Electronegativity – the difference table and the seminar (pp 55–56)

In the HF molecule, do both atoms attract the shared electrons equally?

Using Fig 3.12, find the electronegativity difference of the constituent elements and record it.

No. Fluorine (3.98) attracts the shared pair much more strongly than hydrogen (2.20). The relative ability of an atom in a covalent bond to attract the shared pair is its electronegativity ഇലക്ട്രോനെഗറ്റിവിറ്റി (Pauling scale 0–4; fluorine highest). Rule: difference ≥ 1.7 → generally ionic; less than 1.7 → covalent.

1. 2.20. 2. 3.16. 3. The chlorine nucleus. So chlorine gets a partial negative charge (δ−) and hydrogen a partial positive charge (δ+): δ+H–Clδ−. Molecules like this are polar molecules പോളാർ തന്മാത്രകൾ – CO, HF, HCl, H2O, NH3. In H2, N2, O2 both atoms are the same, so the pair is shared equally (non-polar).

Write the name and formula of the salt formed by each pair of ions.

Positive ionNegative ionName of the salt ലവണത്തിന്റെ പേര്Formula
Mg2+ (magnesium ion)Cl− (chloride ion)magnesium chlorideMgCl2
Mg2+ (magnesium ion)SO42− (sulphate ion)magnesium sulphateMgSO4
Ca2+ (calcium ion)CO32− (carbonate ion)calcium carbonateCaCO3
NH4+ (ammonium ion)Cl− (chloride ion)ammonium chlorideNH4Cl
NH4+ (ammonium ion)PO43− (phosphate ion)ammonium phosphate(NH4)3PO4
Ca2+ (calcium ion)PO43− (phosphate ion)calcium phosphateCa3(PO4)2
Na+ (sodium ion)SO42− (sulphate ion)sodium sulphateNa2SO4
Every formula passes the zero-charge check, e.g. (NH4)3PO4: 3 × (+1) + 1 × (−3) = 0; Na2SO4: 2 × (+1) + (−2) = 0. Try more in the formula machine (page 10).
