Nature, Concentration and Surface Area
Why does magnesium fizz in acid while copper sits still? Why does steel wool that only glows in air burst into sparks in pure oxygen? Why does marble powder react faster than a marble lump? This page takes the first three factors that control the rate of reaction രാസപ്രവർത്തനവേഗം. For each one you run a virtual lab and then explain the result with collision theory കൊളിഷൻ സിദ്ധാന്തം.
- Reactant particles must collide. Only collisions that have at least the threshold energy ത്രെഷോൾഡ് എനർജി give products. These are the effective collisions ഫലവത്തായ കൂട്ടിമുട്ടലുകൾ (page 6).
- More effective collisions per second → faster reaction.
- Concentration means the number of particles per unit volume യൂണിറ്റ് വ്യാപ്തം. When you cut a cube into smaller cubes the total surface area goes up (page 2).
Does it change (a) how many collisions happen each second, or (b) what share of the collisions are effective? If either goes up, the rate goes up.
1. Nature of the reactants
How does the nature of the reactants affect the rate of reaction? Let us do an experiment.
Take equal volumes of dilute നേർപ്പിച്ച hydrochloric acid in three test tubes. Drop one piece each of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and magnesium (Mg), all the same size, into the three tubes. Record what you observe.
All three tubes have the same acid (same volume, same concentration, same temperature) and the pieces are the same size. Only one thing differs: the metal. The bubble counts are illustrative.
Observation, test tube 1 (copper):
Observation, test tube 2 (zinc):
Observation, test tube 3 (magnesium):
Q (page 103). In which test tube is the rate of reaction highest?
The volume of acid and the size of the metal pieces were the same. So the rates differ only because of the nature of copper, zinc and magnesium.
In all three tubes the acid particles hit the metal surface about equally often. What differs is the share of collisions that are effective. Magnesium gives away its two outer electrons most easily, so even gentle collisions with the acid can turn it into Mg²⁺ and set hydrogen free. Many collisions are effective, and the rate is high. Zinc holds its electrons more firmly, so fewer collisions succeed and the rate is lower. Copper is less reactive than hydrogen. It cannot displace hydrogen from dilute HCl, so none of its collisions are effective.
? (page 103). At ordinary temperature sodium (Na) reacts vigorously with water, but magnesium reacts with water only very slowly. Why?
2Na + 2H₂O → 2NaOH + H₂↑ (fast, gives out heat) · Mg + 2H₂O → Mg(OH)₂ + H₂ (very slow in cold water).
White phosphorus and red phosphorus are two allotropes രൂപാന്തരങ്ങൾ of the element phosphorus. They are the same element, with atoms arranged differently. When white phosphorus is in contact with the oxygen in air it catches fire on its own. Red phosphorus can be left open in air for a very long time. Same element, different nature, very different rate.
2. Concentration of the reactants
Take equal volumes of concentrated ഗാഢ and dilute നേർപ്പിച്ച hydrochloric acid in two test tubes.
The number of molecules in unit volume is the concentration
Q (page 104). Then, in which test tube is the number of HCl molecules per unit volume greater?
Put magnesium ribbon of equal mass into both test tubes (Fig 5.7). Record your observations for each tube.
Each zoom box is the same unit volume യൂണിറ്റ് വ്യാപ്തം of acid touching the ribbon. Red dots are acid particles. The grey floor is the magnesium surface. A yellow flash marks an effective collision, and each one sends hydrogen up the tube. Particle numbers and speeds are a model, not real values.
Q (page 104). Write your observations for test tube 1 and test tube 2. In which test tube is the rate of reaction higher?
Test tube 2 (dilute HCl): slow bubbling, and the ribbon lasts much longer.
The rate is higher in test tube 1. Mg + 2HCl → MgCl₂ + H₂↑ in both. The reaction is the same, only the speed differs.
As the concentration of the reactants increases, the number of particles per unit volume increases. As a result the number of effective collisions increases. For this reason the rate of reaction also increases.
With 4 times as many acid particles in each unit volume, about 4 times as many hit the magnesium every second. The share of hits that are effective does not change (same metal, same temperature). But 4 times the hits gives about 4 times the effective collisions, so the rate is higher. The zoom counters in the lab show this.

When steel wool is heated in air it becomes red-hot and is oxidised slowly (Fig A). But if the red-hot wool is brought into an atmosphere rich in oxygen, it burns strongly (Fig B) and forms products. What is the reason?
3. Surface area of the reactants
Analyse Fig 5.8. One beaker has a marble piece മാർബിൾ കഷണം in dilute HCl and the other has powdered marble മാർബിൾ പൊടിച്ചത് in dilute HCl.
Q (page 105). Which are the reactants taking part in this reaction?
Q. What is their physical state ഭൗതികാവസ്ഥ?
Let us write the chemical equation, as printed in the book:
CaCO3(s) + 2HCl(l) → CaCl2(s) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)Hydrochloric acid is HCl gas dissolved in water, and the calcium chloride that forms stays dissolved. So chemists usually write CaCO₃(s) + 2HCl(aq) → CaCl₂(aq) + H₂O(l) + CO₂(g). Here (aq) means "dissolved in water". For your exam the book's form is fine. The bubbles you see are carbon dioxide, CO₂(g).
Take a marble piece and marble powder of equal mass. React them with dilute hydrochloric acid of equal volume and the same concentration, and record your observations.
Model: the lump is a 2 cm cube, with surface area 6 × 2 × 2 = 24 cm². Cutting each edge into n parts gives n³ small cubes of the same total mass, with surface area 24 × n cm². The rate in the model is proportional to the surface the acid can touch. The numbers are illustrative.
Q (page 105). Answer from your observations:
Is the rate of reaction the same in both beakers?
Is the surface area of the marble the same in both?
When the surface area increases, what change happens in the rate of collisions between the reactant molecules?
If the marble grains are ground very finely, what change happens in the rate?
2. No. The mass is equal, but the powder has a much greater surface area. Only the outside of the lump touches the acid, while every tiny grain of the powder has its own surface in contact with the acid.
3. The number of collisions between acid particles and the marble surface per second increases, so the effective collisions also increase.
4. The rate becomes even faster. The finer the powder, the greater the surface area (try n = 10 in the lab).
In reactions involving solids, surface area പ്രതലപരപ്പളവ് is a main factor that controls the rate. When a substance is cut into small pieces or powdered, its surface area increases. More molecules can then take part in effective collisions, and the rate of reaction goes up.
A solid can react only at its surface, because the particles inside the lump are hidden from the acid. Powdering exposes the hidden particles. More surface means more collisions per second at the same concentration and temperature. That means more effective collisions and a faster rate. The total amount of CO₂ is the same, because the mass of marble is the same. The powder only gives it sooner.
Q (page 106). From this, can you see why firewood burns faster when it is split into small pieces?
Q (page 106). Find more examples from daily life showing that the rate increases as the surface area increases.
- Chewing food well breaks it into tiny pieces, so the digestive enzymes act faster.
- Crushed ginger and garlic release their flavour faster in a curry than whole pieces do.
- Thin slices of vegetables and small pieces of meat or fish cook faster.
- Dried leaves and sawdust catch fire easily, but a thick log does not.
- An iron nail rusts slowly, while fine iron wool rusts quickly in the monsoon air.
- Powdered medicine and effervescent tablets that are broken up act faster.
- Analogy (a physical change): powdered sugar dissolves faster than a sugar cube.
- Go further: fine coal dust in mines and fine flour dust in mills can explode, because so much surface burns at once.
The rate of a reaction depends on the physical state ഭൗതികാവസ്ഥ of the reactants. If solid zinc sulphate and solid barium nitrate are mixed, no visible reaction takes place. But when their solutions in water are mixed, a white precipitate അവക്ഷിപ്തം of barium sulphate forms at once. In solution the ions move freely and collide effectively. In the solids the particles are locked in place. So the physical state plays a major part in deciding the rate. For the same reason petrol (gasoline) vapour burns explosively, much faster than liquid petrol, because the vapour is mixed molecule by molecule with the oxygen.
Soluble barium compounds are poisonous, so this is a teacher demonstration. It is also a double decomposition (precipitation) reaction (page 5).

Write the chemical equation of the reaction.
• The powder has a much larger surface area than the single piece of the same mass. More acid particles collide with the shell every second, so there are more effective collisions and a faster rate.
• Eggshell is mainly calcium carbonate: CaCO₃ + 2HCl → CaCl₂ + H₂O + CO₂↑. The bubbles are carbon dioxide.

Magnesium is used in the fireworks that brighten our festivals (Vishu, Onam, Diwali). Burning magnesium gives a brilliant light. The magnesium used is a powder. What could be the reason?

- Nature of reactants: with dilute HCl the rate is Mg > Zn > Cu (copper does not react). Na reacts with water vigorously and Mg only very slowly. White phosphorus catches fire in air and red phosphorus does not (allotropes രൂപാന്തരങ്ങൾ).
- Concentration = number of molecules in unit volume. More concentrated → more particles per unit volume → more effective collisions → faster (Mg in concentrated HCl, steel wool in pure O₂).
- Surface area: powder > lump. More surface → more collisions → faster (marble and eggshell powder, split firewood, Mg powder in fireworks).
- Physical state: solutions and vapours react faster than solids and liquids. Solid ZnSO₄ + Ba(NO₃)₂ give no change, while their solutions give white BaSO₄ at once.
- The amount of product depends on the amount of reactant. These factors only change how fast it forms.
