Organic Chemistry and Hydrocarbons
Rice, wheat and sugar, the tablets in a medicine strip, plastic water bottles, nail-polish remover, kerosene and the LPG cylinder in your kitchen – all of them are built around one element: carbon. This page opens the chapter. You will find out what an organic compound is, how one experiment in 1828 overturned an old belief, why carbon can form so many compounds, and meet the simplest organic compounds of all – the hydrocarbons.
- Carbon: atomic number 6, electron configuration 2, 4, so it has 4 electrons in its outer shell and a valency of 4 (page 1).
- A covalent bond സഹസംയോജക ബന്ധനം is a shared pair of electrons: one pair = single bond, two pairs = double bond, three pairs = triple bond.
- A structural formula ഘടനാവാക്യം shows every atom and every bond; a molecular formula തന്മാത്രാസൂത്രം only counts the atoms (page 2).
1. Carbon is everywhere
(Organic chemistry).
Carbon is one of the elements you know best. In the last chapter you studied some of its compounds: CO, CO2, carbonates and bicarbonates. The opening picture of this chapter shows four groups of things around a big letter C. Tap each group to see the carbon compounds hiding in it.
The compounds of carbon other than CO, CO2, carbonates and bicarbonates are called organic compounds ഓർഗാനിക് സംയുക്തങ്ങൾ. The branch of chemistry that studies them is organic chemistry കാർബണിക രസതന്ത്രം.
Two questions for each one: (1) Does it contain carbon? (2) If yes, is it CO, CO2, a carbonate or a bicarbonate? Only "yes, and no" makes it organic.
No other branch of science is as closely linked to human life as organic chemistry. Almost everything we see and use around us contains carbon – our food, clothes, medicines, fuels, plastics and our own bodies. The total number of compounds of all the other elements put together is only about one-tenth of the number of carbon compounds. In other words, carbon compounds are roughly ten times as many as all the rest.
2. The end of the "vital force"
The name organic chemistry was given by the Swedish scientist Jöns Jacob Berzelius. People then believed that organic compounds could be made only inside living things (organisms), by a special "vital force" ജീവശക്തി. That belief gave the subject its name.
But in 1828 the German scientist Friedrich Wöhler heated an inorganic compound, ammonium cyanate അമോണിയം സയനേറ്റ്, and got urea യൂറിയ – an organic compound found in urine. No living thing was involved. The vital-force theory had received a blow.
Then Kolbe (1845) made acetic acid (CH3COOH – the acid in vinegar) and Berthelot (1856) made methane (CH4) entirely from inorganic substances. After that the vital-force theory lost all meaning. Even so, because carbon compounds are so many and so varied, we still call them organic compounds.
Ammonium cyanate and urea have exactly the same atoms – N2H4CO – arranged differently. Compounds with the same molecular formula but different structures are called isomers. You will meet this idea again in higher classes; it is one more reason why carbon compounds are so many.

Carbon has four electrons in its outermost shell, and its valency is 4. So carbon can form covalent bonds in many different ways – four single bonds, a double bond and two single bonds, or a triple bond and a single bond. Gaining or losing four electrons would need far too much energy, so carbon shares.
4. Hydrocarbons
8.1). The structure of an organic compound is given (Fig 8.1).
Chemists also build ball-and-stick models ബോൾ & സ്റ്റിക്ക് മാതൃക: a dark ball for each carbon, a white ball for each hydrogen and a stick for each bond (one stick per shared pair). Turn the models below – they are a preview of the next two pages.
Q1 (page 154). Which atoms make up this compound?
Q2. What is special about the bond between carbon and hydrogen?
Q3. Do you know other compounds that contain only carbon and hydrogen?
Q2. Carbon shares one pair of electrons with each hydrogen: four single covalent bonds ഏകബന്ധനം. Carbon's 4 valencies are all used, and each H uses its valency of 1.
Q3. Examples: ethane C2H6, propane C3H8 and butane C4H10 (LPG), ethene C2H4 (used to ripen fruit), ethyne C2H2 (acetylene, for welding), benzene C6H6, naphthalene C10H8 (moth balls) – and the mixtures petrol, kerosene and diesel.
Complete the valencies with hydrogen (Fig 8.2)
Look at the carbon skeletons in Fig 8.2. Each carbon already shows its 4 bonds, but some bond lines are open. Complete the valencies of carbon by putting a hydrogen atom on every open bond.
Q (page 155). What are the features of the bonds between the carbon atoms in Fig 8.2?
In (ii) the two carbon atoms share …
(ii) double bond ദ്വിബന്ധനം C=C: two shared pairs. Each carbon has 2 more bonds → 2 H each → C2H4 (ethene).
(iii) triple bond ത്രിബന്ധനം C≡C: three shared pairs. Each carbon has 1 more bond → 1 H each → C2H2 (ethyne).
So carbon atoms can join each other by single, double or triple covalent bonds, and in every case each carbon still has exactly 4 bonds. The more bonds used between the carbons, the fewer hydrogens they can hold.
Compounds containing only carbon and hydrogen are called hydrocarbons
So among hydrocarbons there are compounds with single bonds, compounds with double bonds and compounds with triple bonds between carbon atoms. These three kinds give the three families of the next two pages:
| Bond between carbons | Shared pairs | Example | Family | Saturated? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| C–C single ഏകബന്ധനം | 1 | ethane C2H6 | alkanes ആൽക്കെയ്നുകൾ | saturated പൂരിത (page 4) |
| C=C double ദ്വിബന്ധനം | 2 | ethene C2H4 | alkenes ആൽക്കീനുകൾ | unsaturated അപൂരിത (page 5) |
| C≡C triple ത്രിബന്ധനം | 3 | ethyne C2H2 | alkynes ആൽക്കൈനുകൾ |
- Calling CO2, CO, CaCO3 or NaHCO3 organic ✗ – they contain carbon but are excluded by the definition.
- "Organic compounds can only come from living things" ✗ – that was the vital-force idea; Wöhler made urea in the lab in 1828.
- Calling sugar or alcohol a hydrocarbon ✗ – they contain oxygen too. A hydrocarbon has only C and H.
- Drawing a carbon with 3 or 5 bonds ✗ – carbon always has 4. Count the lines around every C.
