Alkanes – Saturated Hydrocarbons
The gas in a biogas plant, the LPG in your kitchen cylinder and the candle wax on your study table all belong to one family: the alkanes. In every alkane each carbon uses all four of its bonds as single bonds. On this page you turn methane and ethane in 3-D, learn a short way to write structures (the condensed formula), fill Table 8.2, and discover the rule that gives the number of hydrogen atoms in any alkane.
1. Methane – the simplest hydrocarbon (Fig 8.3)
Analyse the structure of the hydrocarbon given below and write its molecular formula.
A flat drawing puts the four H of methane at right angles, but in the real molecule they point to the four corners of a tetrahedron, as far apart as possible. Turn the model and see.
Q (page 155). Write the molecular formula of the compound in Fig 8.3. What type of covalent bond is in it?
Type of covalent bond:
2. Ethane and the condensed formula (Fig 8.4)
Fig 8.4 shows another hydrocarbon that has two carbon atoms and only single bonds. Pick "ethane" in the viewer above to turn its model.
Q (page 156). What is the molecular formula of this compound?
Drawing every H takes space. The structure of ethane can be written in a short form as CH3 – CH3: each carbon is written together with the hydrogens joined to it, and only the bonds between carbons are drawn. This way of writing is called the condensed formula കണ്ടൻസ്ഡ് ഫോർമുല.
| Three ways to write a molecule | What it shows | Propane |
|---|---|---|
| Structural formula ഘടനാവാക്യം | every atom and every bond | |
| Condensed formula കണ്ടൻസ്ഡ് ഫോർമുല | each carbon with its H atoms; bonds between carbons | CH3 – CH2 – CH3 |
| Molecular formula തന്മാത്രാസൂത്രം | only how many atoms of each element | C3H8 |
3. Table 8.2 – more carbons, single bonds only
Let us add more carbon atoms – still joined only by single bonds – and write the structure, condensed formula and molecular formula. Complete the table.
- Write the carbons in a row, joined by single lines: C–C–C–C.
- Count the bonds each carbon already has: an end carbon has 1, a middle carbon has 2.
- Fill up to 4 with hydrogen: end carbon → 3 H (CH3), middle carbon → 2 H (CH2).
- Check: count the lines around every C – it must be 4.
| C atoms | Condensed formula | Molecular formula | State |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | CH4 | CH4 | gas |
| 2 | CH3 – CH3 | C2H6 | gas |
| 3 | CH3 – CH2 – CH3 | C3H8 | gas |
| 4 | CH3 – CH2 – CH2 – CH3 | C4H10 | gas |
| 5 | CH3 – CH2 – CH2 – CH2 – CH3 | C5H12 | liquid |
| 6 | CH3 – CH2 – CH2 – CH2 – CH2 – CH3 | C6H14 | liquid |
4. Alkanes are saturated
All the compounds in Table 8.2 have only single bonds.
Open-chain ഓപ്പൺ ചെയിൻ hydrocarbons with only single bonds between carbon atoms are called alkanes ആൽക്കെയ്നുകൾ.
In alkanes, all the valencies of every carbon atom are completed by single bonds. So alkanes are also called saturated hydrocarbons പൂരിത ഹൈഡ്രോകാർബണുകൾ. "Saturated" means "full": no carbon can take any more hydrogen.
"Open chain" means the carbon atoms form a chain with two free ends – not a closed ring (rings come on page 8).
5. Counting the hydrogens: the general formula
Analyse Table 8.2 and answer the questions.
a. How many hydrogen atoms are there in the alkane with one carbon atom?
… with 2 carbon atoms?
… and with 3 and with 4 carbon atoms?
d. Which number, added to twice the number of carbon atoms, gives the number of hydrogen atoms in each?
e. (2n, 2n+2, 2n−2) If an alkane has n carbon atoms, how many hydrogen atoms will it have?
f. Write the general formula of alkanes.
e. 2n + 2. f. General formula പൊതുവാക്യം of alkanes: CnH2n+2.
Why "+2"? Every carbon has two H "above and below" (2n), and the two end carbons each have one extra H at the end (+2).
Use the rule. An alkane has 8 carbon atoms. Write its molecular formula.
6. Structure builder
Choose the number of carbon atoms (1–10). The structural formula is drawn with every H, and the condensed and molecular formulae update together. The small "4 ✔" under each carbon confirms it has exactly four bonds. You can also try the other bond types – they are the subject of the next page.
- Methane CH4 – natural gas, biogas from cow dung and kitchen waste, CNG for autos and buses.
- Propane C3H8 and butane C4H10 – LPG in the kitchen cylinder (mainly butane).
- Octane C8H18 and its relatives – petrol. Larger alkanes – kerosene, diesel, and paraffin wax for candles.
- Giving a middle carbon 3 H ✗ – a middle carbon already has 2 C–C bonds, so it takes only 2 H (CH2).
- Writing butane as C4H8 ✗ – alkanes follow 2n + 2: C4H10.
- Mixing up the formulas: CH3–CH2–CH3 is the condensed formula; C3H8 is the molecular formula.
- Writing the general formula as CnH2n ✗ – that is for alkenes. Alkanes: CnH2n+2.
