Alkenes and Alkynes – Unsaturated Hydrocarbons
Ripening bananas give off a tiny amount of ethene, and the hot blue flame that welders use to cut steel burns ethyne (acetylene). Both have carbon atoms joined by more than one bond. On this page you meet the two unsaturated families, fill Tables 8.3 and 8.4, find two more general formulae, and then sort ten hydrocarbons into their families.
1. Unsaturated hydrocarbons
Hydrocarbons with a double bond or a triple bond between carbon atoms are generally called unsaturated hydrocarbons
Why "unsaturated"? A carbon in a double or triple bond spends two or three of its four valencies on the other carbon, so it holds fewer hydrogen atoms than it could. Ethane C2H6 is "full"; ethene C2H4 and ethyne C2H2 are not.
2. Ethene – one double bond (Fig 8.5)
8.5). Fig 8.5 shows the structure of a hydrocarbon with a double bond between its two carbon atoms.
Ethene is flat – turn it edge-on and all six atoms line up. Ethyne is a straight rod.
Q (page 157). What is the molecular formula of the compound in Fig 8.5? Write its condensed formula.
Now draw structures with more carbon atoms, keeping a double bond between two of the carbons. Use the builder to check your drawings – move the slider and watch the double bond stay between C1 and C2.
Look at C1 and C2. A double bond uses 2 of their 4 bonds, so C1 holds 2 H and C2 only 1 H. A triple bond uses 3, so C1 holds 1 H and C2 none. Every other carbon is just like in an alkane.
3. Table 8.3 – alkenes
Complete the table below.
| C atoms | Condensed formula | Molecular formula | State |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | CH2 = CH2 | C2H4 | gas |
| 3 | CH2 = CH – CH3 | C3H6 | gas |
| 4 | CH2 = CH – CH2 – CH3 | C4H8 | gas |
| 5 | CH2 = CH – CH2 – CH2 – CH3 | C5H10 | liquid |
| 6 | CH2 = CH – CH2 – CH2 – CH2 – CH3 | C6H12 | liquid |
Hydrocarbons with at least one double bond between any two carbon atoms are called alkenes
Analyse Table 8.3.
a. What is the relation between the number of carbon atoms and the number of hydrogen atoms in alkenes?
b. If an alkene has n carbon atoms, how many hydrogen atoms will it have?
c. Write the general formula of alkenes.
Compared with the alkane of the same n, an alkene has 2 fewer H: the second bond of C=C uses one valency on each of the two carbons, so two H must go.
4. Ethyne – one triple bond (Fig 8.6)
Look at the structure of the hydrocarbon with a triple bond between two carbon atoms (Fig 8.6, drawn above beside ethene). Choose "ethyne" in the ball-and-stick viewer to turn its model.
Q (page 158). Write the molecular formula and the condensed formula of the compound in Fig 8.6.
Table 8.4 – alkynes
Complete the table. (Tip: set the builder above to "triple" to check your structures.)
| C atoms | Condensed formula | Molecular formula | State |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | CH ≡ CH | C2H2 | gas |
| 3 | CH ≡ C – CH3 | C3H4 | gas |
| 4 | CH ≡ C – CH2 – CH3 | C4H6 | gas |
| 5 | CH ≡ C – CH2 – CH2 – CH3 | C5H8 | liquid |
| 6 | CH ≡ C – CH2 – CH2 – CH2 – CH3 | C6H10 | liquid |
Hydrocarbons with at least one triple bond between any two carbon atoms are called alkynes
Analyse Table 8.4.
a. Is the number of hydrogen atoms twice the number of carbon atoms in these?
b. Which number, taken away from twice the number of carbon atoms, gives the number of hydrogen atoms?
c. (2n+2, 2n, 2n−2) If an alkyne has n carbon atoms, how many hydrogen atoms will it have?
d. Write the general formula of alkynes.
A triple bond uses two extra valencies on each of its two carbons, so an alkyne has 4 fewer H than the alkane with the same n, and 2 fewer than the alkene.
5. Three families, three general formulae
Alkanes
only C–C single bonds · saturatedCnH2n+2
CH4, C2H6, C3H8 …
Alkenes
at least one C=C · unsaturatedCnH2n
C2H4, C3H6, C4H8 …
Alkynes
at least one C≡C · unsaturatedCnH2n−2
C2H2, C3H4, C4H6 …
The three lines are parallel and exactly 2 apart: each extra bond between two carbons removes 2 hydrogen atoms.
6. Classify the hydrocarbons (page 159)
Analyse the molecular formulae of the hydrocarbons given below and list them as alkane, alkene and alkyne.
C5H10, C3H4, C2H4, C5H12, C6H12, C7H12, C9H20, C3H8, C4H6, C4H8
Method: take n = number of carbons. Work out 2n + 2, 2n and 2n − 2. The one that equals the number of H tells you the family.
|---|---|---|
| C5H12, C9H20, C3H8 | C5H10, C2H4, C6H12, C4H8 | C3H4, C7H12, C4H6 |
Try any formula. Type a hydrocarbon formula (like C8H16 or C10H22) and the classifier tells you the family and draws one possible structure.
A molecular formula alone does not always decide the family. C5H10 fits an alkene (pentene) but also a ring compound with only single bonds (cyclopentane, page 8). For open-chain hydrocarbons with at most one multiple bond – the ones in this chapter's questions – the rule above works, and the textbook answer for C5H10 is "alkene". Also, the position of the double bond can change: CH2=CH–CH2–CH3 is but-1-ene and CH3–CH=CH–CH3 is but-2-ene (both C4H8).
- Ethene C2H4 – a natural plant hormone that ripens fruit; also the raw material of polythene (plastic bags and bottles).
- Propene C3H6 – raw material for polypropylene (buckets, chairs, food boxes).
- Ethyne C2H2 (acetylene) – burnt with oxygen in the oxy-acetylene torch (about 3000 °C) to weld and cut metals.
- Mixing up the general formulas ✗ – alkane 2n + 2, alkene 2n, alkyne 2n − 2.
- Giving C2 of propene 2 H (CH2=CH2–CH3) ✗ – that carbon would have 5 bonds. It is CH2=CH–CH3.
- Writing ethyne as CH2≡CH2 ✗ – each carbon has only one bond left: CH≡CH.
- "Alkenes have a double bond, so they have double the hydrogens" ✗ – a double bond means fewer hydrogens.
