Work and How to Measure It പ്രവൃത്തി
In everyday Malayalam or English, "work" means any effort – studying, holding a bag, pushing a wall. In physics the word has a sharp meaning: a force does work only when it actually moves something in its own direction. On this page you sort real situations, push wheelchairs in a virtual hospital corridor, and meet the unit of work – the joule.
- Force (ബലം) is a push or a pull, measured in newtons (N). It has a direction.
- Displacement (സ്ഥാനാന്തരം) is the shortest distance from the start to the end position, in a definite direction, in metres (m).
- Friction (ഘർഷണബലം) acts opposite to the motion. To move something steadily along a level floor we push just as hard as friction pulls back.
1. The dam and a big question (page 107)
The chapter opens with a huge dam in the hills of Kerala. Two students look at it:
Keep this question in mind: ഇത് എങ്ങനെയാണ് സാധ്യമാകുന്നത് എന്ന് നമുക്ക് നോക്കാം – let us see how this is possible. To answer it we need two ideas – work (this page and the next) and energy (pages 7–9). The full answer comes on page 10.
2. When is work done? (Fig 6.1, Table 6.1)
– The pictures show some things we do every day. Analyse them and complete Table 6.1. Press ▶ on a row to watch that situation, then choose Yes or No.
സ്ഥാനാന്തരം സംഭവിച്ചു / ഇല്ല | Displaced in the direction of the force?
– So, from Table 6.1, a force does not always cause a displacement in its own direction.
When a force acts on an object and, because of it, the object is displaced in the direction of the force, the force is said to have done work on the object.
Textbook questions (page 108)
– In which situations of Table 6.1 is work done?
– In which situations is no work done?
2. No work is done in (b) pushing the big rock and (d) standing with a sack on the head. Why: the rock does not move at all, and the sack on the head stays where it is – a force with zero displacement does no work, however tiring it feels.
When a headload worker at a market carries sacks up a plank into a lorry, the upward force on each sack moves it upwards – work is done on the sack. When the same worker stands still, waiting with a 50 kg sack on his head, he gets tired, yet in physics his force does no work on the sack because the sack is not displaced. His tiredness comes from his muscles constantly tightening and relaxing inside his body – the energy is used up there, not on the sack.
Class 9 uses forces along the line of motion. If a force is slanted (say you pull a suitcase by a handle that points up and forward), only the part of the force along the motion does work; the upward part does none, because the suitcase does not move upward.
3. How much work? – the wheelchair (Fig 6.2)
The thinking boy asks: – Can the amount of work be calculated?
– In a hospital, an attendant pushes two patients in wheelchairs, each 10 m along a level corridor, at the same steady speed along the same path. Patient 1 needs a force of 40 N; patient 2, who is heavier, needs 70 N. A heavier patient presses the wheelchair harder on the floor, so the friction (ഘർഷണബലം) is greater. The displacement (10 m) is the same in both cases.
– When we move things along a level floor, we push against friction, so the work we do here is work against friction.
| Trial | Patient | Force F (N) | Displacement s (m) | Work W = F × s (J) |
|---|
The chair moves at a steady speed, so the push exactly balances friction (red and blue arrows are equal). Try the textbook's three cases: patient 1 for 10 m, patient 2 for 10 m, patient 2 for 20 m.
Textbook questions (page 109)
– In which situation is more work done? Why? (situation 1 / situation 2)
– Which factor affects the amount of work here? (force / displacement)
– If patient 2 is taken 20 m under the same conditions, more work is done. Which factor caused the increase? (force / displacement)
2. Force. Why: only the force changed between the two situations.
3. Displacement. Why: the force stayed 70 N but the displacement doubled (10 m → 20 m), so the work doubled: 70 × 20 = 1400 J.

– Note the factors that decide the amount of work.
- Force (ബലം)
- Displacement in the direction of the force (സ്ഥാനാന്തരം)
The amount of work = the product of the force applied and the displacement of the object in the direction of the force.
Work = force × displacement പ്രവൃത്തി = ബലം × സ്ഥാനാന്തരം
W = F s
If a force of F newtons acts steadily and the object is displaced s metres in the direction of the force, the work done is W = F × s.
Numerical (wheelchair values). Find the work done by the attendant in each case: patient 1 (40 N) for 10 m, patient 2 (70 N) for 10 m, patient 2 for 20 m.
Multiply force (N) by displacement (m). The answer is in N m – that is, joules (J).
4. The unit of work – the joule
unit of work = unit of force × unit of displacement = newton × metre = N m (newton metre, ന്യൂട്ടൺ മീറ്റർ)
– In SI units the newton metre is called the joule (J) (ജൂൾ), in honour of James Prescott Joule. So 1 J = 1 N m. Bigger amounts: 1 kilojoule (kJ) = 1000 J; 1 megajoule (MJ) = 106 J.

- Was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1850.
– A force of 1 N moves an object 1 m along a level surface in the direction of the force. Find the work done by the force.
Fill in the blanks of W = F × s: F = 1 N, s = ? Then multiply.
When a force of 1 N acting on an object displaces it through 1 m in the direction of the force, the work done by the force is 1 joule (1 J).
A small apple has a mass of about 100 g, so it weighs about 1 N. Lifting it slowly through 1 m (from the floor to a table top) takes about 1 J of work. Pushing a wheelchair 10 m took hundreds of joules – that is why we often use kilojoules.

- A force does work only when the object is displaced in the direction of the force. No displacement → no work (pushing a rock that does not move, holding a sack still).
- The amount of work depends on the force and the displacement: W = F s.
- Unit: N × m = N m = joule (J). 1 J = work done when 1 N moves an object 1 m in its direction.
- Wheelchair: 40 N × 10 m = 400 J; 70 N × 10 m = 700 J; 70 N × 20 m = 1400 J.
