Work Against Gravity and Negative Work
Every time you climb the stairs, carry a bucket up to the terrace or a crane lifts a container at a port, work is done against gravity. On this page you find a neat formula for it, discover that the path does not matter, and meet forces that do negative work – forces that act against the motion.
- Work W = F s (page 5): force × displacement in the direction of the force; unit joule (J).
- Weight = mg: the Earth pulls an object of mass m kg with a force of mg newtons, downwards. Use the value of g the question gives (9.8 m/s² or 10 m/s²).
- Mass in grams must be changed to kilograms: 100 g = 0.1 kg.
1. Lifting a container – work against gravity (Fig 6.3)
The thinking girl asks: – How do we calculate the work done in lifting things? – When we lift things, we must apply a force against the force of gravity.
– A crane is lifting a container of mass m kg through a height of h metres. The weight of the container is mg newtons. Only if the crane pulls upwards with a force at least equal to this can it lift the container.
Textbook blanks (page 110)
- കണ്ടെയ്നറിൽ ഭൂമി പ്രയോഗിക്കുന്ന ബലം – force exerted by the Earth on the container = ______
- ക്രെയിൻ കണ്ടെയ്നറിൽ പ്രയോഗിക്കേണ്ട ബലം – force the crane must apply on the container = ______
Force the crane must apply = mg, upwards (at least; a tiny bit more to start it moving, then exactly mg to lift it at a steady speed). Why: to lift the container steadily, the upward pull must balance its weight.
ക്രെയിൻ പ്രയോഗിച്ച ബലം കണ്ടെയ്നറിൽ ചെയ്ത പ്രവൃത്തിയുടെ അളവ് – work done by the crane's force on the container:
W = F × s, F = mg, s = h (the displacement is the height)
W = mg × h = mgh
W = mgh
When an object is lifted, the work done against gravity (ഗുരുത്വാകർഷണത്തിനെതിരായ പ്രവൃത്തി) is W = mgh (m in kg, g in m/s², h in m, W in J).
At the Vizhinjam International Seaport near Thiruvananthapuram, giant cranes lift containers off ships. A loaded container can have a mass of about 20 000 kg (approx.). Lifting it 30 m needs W = mgh = 20 000 × 9.8 × 30 = 5 880 000 J (about 5.9 MJ) of work against gravity – for just one container!
2. Textbook questions (page 111)
– Find the work needed to lift an object of mass 100 g through 1 m (g = 10 m/s²).
First change 100 g to kg (divide by 1000). Then use W = mgh.
Q2. – A barrel of mass 50 kg has to be loaded into a lorry. The height of the lorry from the ground is 2 m (g = 10 m/s²).
– Find the work done against gravity in loading the barrel.
– If it is rolled up to the 2 m height along a 5 m long ramp, what is the work done against gravity?
Does the work done against gravity depend on the path? (yes/no)
Work against gravity = weight × vertical height gained. Which height does the barrel finally reach in both cases? Try both paths in the lab below.
| Path | Force needed F (N) | Distance moved s (m) | Work F × s (J) | Work against gravity mgh (J) |
|---|
The lab ignores friction and pushes the barrel at a steady speed (g = 10 m/s²). On a ramp of length L and height h the push needed is only h/L of the weight – a smaller force over a longer distance. If you make the ramp shorter than the height, the lab stretches it to the height (a ramp cannot be shorter than the height).
Watch headload workers loading a lorry with drums, gas cylinders or a heavy motor: they lay a strong wooden plank from the ground to the lorry and roll the load up. The work against gravity is the same as lifting it straight up, but the force needed at any moment is much smaller – so a heavy load becomes manageable (the price: they push it over a longer distance).
3. Negative work (Fig 6.4, Table 6.2)
– A girl pulls a box along a table. Observe Fig 6.4 and complete the table. The forces on the box are: gravitational force – A, friction – B, the force of the table on the box – C, and the girl's force on the box – D (ഗുരുത്വാകർഷണ ബലം - A, ഘർഷണ ബലം - B, വസ്തുവിൽ മേശ പ്രയോഗിക്കുന്ന ബലം - C, കുട്ടി വസ്തുവിൽ പ്രയോഗിക്കുന്ന ബലം - D). All four arrows start at the point P on the box.
| Force on the box പെട്ടിയിലനുഭവപ്പെടുന്ന ബലം | Direction ബലത്തിന്റെ ദിശ | Work on the box (sample) |
|---|
Sample values (approx.): box 2 kg, so its weight A = 20 N (g = 10) and the table pushes up with C = 20 N; friction B = 8 N; the girl pulls with D = 8 N, so the box slides steadily 0.5 m.
Textbook questions (pages 111–112)
– What is the direction of motion of the box? (P → D, P → A, P → C, P → B)
– In the direction of which force was the box displaced?
– Opposite to which force was the box displaced?
– Why do the gravitational force and the table's force not displace the box?
2. In the direction of the girl's force (D) – so her force does positive work.
3. Opposite to friction (B) – so friction does negative work.
4. Gravity (A, down) and the table's force (C, up) are vertical, at right angles to the horizontal motion, and they are equal and opposite, so they cancel. The box does not move up or down, so these two forces cause no displacement in their directions and do no work.
– The box moved in the direction of the girl's force, so her force did work on it: this is positive work. The box moved opposite to friction, so the work done by friction is negative work.
If an object is displaced in the direction of the force, the work done by that force is positive.
If an object is displaced opposite to the direction of the force, the work done by that force is negative.
4. Positive or negative? (page 112)
– For each case, say whether the work is positive or negative. First watch a stone thrown straight up.
Sample stone: 0.2 kg (weight 2 N with g = 10 m/s²), thrown up at 10 m/s from the hand, so it rises 5 m in 1 s and falls back in another 1 s (air resistance ignored).
Q (page 112). – A shopper in a supermarket applies a steady force of 95 N to push a trolley through 16 m. Calculate the work done.
The trolley moves in the direction of the push, so W = F × s (positive work).
– Don't we feel tired after doing different kinds of work? Isn't it because we spend energy to do work? That is the link to the next page: energy is what lets us do work.
5. Check yourself
- To lift an object steadily we pull up with a force equal to its weight mg; the displacement is the height h, so the work against gravity is W = mgh.
- Work against gravity depends only on m, g and the vertical height – not on the path. A ramp needs a smaller force over a longer distance (barrel: 500 N × 2 m = 200 N × 5 m = 1000 J).
- Displacement in the direction of the force → positive work; opposite to the force → negative work; at right angles (or no displacement) → no work.
- Friction on a sliding object and gravity on a rising object do negative work.
