Energy, Mechanical Energy and Potential Energy
After a long day of work you feel tired – you have used up energy. A stretched bow, a coconut high up on a tree and water stored in a terrace tank all hold energy too, ready to do work. On this page you find out what energy is, how food energy is measured, and how to calculate the energy an object gets just by being high up.
- Work W = F s; unit joule (J); 1 kJ = 1000 J (pages 2 and 5).
- Work done against gravity in lifting an object: W = mgh (page 6).
- Everyday forms of energy – electrical, heat, light, sound, chemical, mechanical (page 4).
1. What is energy? (page 113)
The thinking boy asks: – Is there any relation between energy and work?
– Write examples of forms of energy (ഊർജരൂപങ്ങൾ) you know: electrical energy (വൈദ്യുതോർജം), mechanical energy (യാന്ത്രികോർജം), heat energy (താപോർജം), … Try to add more, then explore them below.
– We use these forms of energy to do work. So what is energy?
Energy is the capacity to do work.
– It is energy that turns into work, so energy has the same unit as work. The SI unit of energy is the joule (J).
2. Calories and joules – food energy
– For the energy in food we also use the kilocalorie (kcal) (കിലോകലോറി). What is the relation between the joule and the calorie?
1 cal (calorie, കലോറി) = 4.2 J · 1 kcal = 4200 J · (1000 cal = 1 kcal)
"Could lift" assumes all the energy became work against gravity (h = E ÷ mg, g = 9.8 m/s²). A real body turns only about a quarter of food energy into work – the rest becomes heat, which keeps us warm.
Q (page 113). – A mango contains about 840 kJ of energy. How many calories is this?
Change kJ to J (× 1000). Each 4.2 J is one calorie, so divide by 4.2. Then 1000 cal = 1 kcal.
3. Mechanical energy (page 114)
– Of all the forms of energy, let us learn more about mechanical energy.
Mechanical energy is the energy an object has because of its motion, its position or its configuration (shape or arrangement of its parts).
– Mechanical energy is of two main kinds: potential energy (സ്ഥിതികോർജം) and kinetic energy (ഗതികോർജം, next page).
4. Potential energy – the bow and the toy car (Fig 6.5)
– Notice how the arrow in Fig 6.5 (a) and the toy car in Fig 6.5 (b) are placed: the arrow sits in a drawn bow; the car waits at the top of a ramp.
Sample values (approx.): a toy bow that needs about 300 N/m of pull per metre of draw (stored energy ≈ ½ × 300 × x², a formula you will meet in higher classes), arrow 20 g; toy car 100 g, g = 9.8 m/s². The speeds ignore friction and air.
Textbook questions (page 114)
– What happens if the arrow in the drawn bow and the car at the height are released?
– Where does the arrow get the energy to move?
– How did the toy car get the energy to move?
2. From the stretched string and the bent bow: ചരടിന്റെ വലിവും വില്ലിന്റെ വളവും ചേർന്ന് ഉളവാക്കിയ സവിശേഷമായ വിന്യാസം (configuration) – the special arrangement (configuration) made by the pull of the string and the bend of the bow. Why: when we draw the bow we do work on it; that work is stored, and released into the arrow.
3. From its position – it was placed high up Why: work was done against gravity to put it there.
– Here the objects got their energy because of their position or configuration. Such energy is potential energy.
Potential energy is the energy an object has because of its position or its configuration. So there are two kinds:
- potential energy due to position (സ്ഥാനം മൂലമുള്ള സ്ഥിതികോർജം) – the raised toy car;
- potential energy due to configuration (കോൺഫിഗറേഷൻ മൂലമുള്ള സ്ഥിതികോർജം) – the drawn bow.
5. Sort them – Table 6.3 (Fig 6.6)
– Classify the situations below by how the potential energy is obtained, and tabulate them.
| Potential energy due to position സ്ഥാനം മൂലമുള്ള സ്ഥിതികോർജം | Potential energy due to configuration കോൺഫിഗറേഷൻ മൂലമുള്ള സ്ഥിതികോർജം |

6. How much potential energy? Ep = mgh
The thinking girl asks: – How can we calculate the potential energy due to position?
– The potential energy due to position comes from the work done against gravity in raising the object. So the potential energy is equal to that work
Potential energy due to position Ep = mgh
m = mass (kg), g = acceleration due to gravity (m/s²), h = height above the ground (m), Ep in joules
g = 9.8 m/s². The graph of Ep against h is a straight line through the zero level: double the height → double the potential energy.
– Potential energy is relative: we choose a reference level and call the potential energy there zero. Since we measure heights from the ground, the potential energy at ground level is usually taken as zero.
– An object of mass 50 kg is raised 8 m from the ground (g = 9.8 m/s²).
– What is its potential energy when it is on the ground?
– What is its potential energy at a height of 8 m?
(a) Which level is taken as zero? (b) Fill the textbook's blanks: m = ___, g = 9.8 m/s², h = ___, Ep = m × g × h.
- A coconut of about 1.5 kg (approx.) at the top of a 15 m tree has Ep = 1.5 × 9.8 × 15 = 220.5 J – enough to injure badly if it falls on someone.
- A 1000-litre water tank on a terrace 10 m above the ground holds 1000 kg of water: Ep = 1000 × 9.8 × 10 = 98 000 J. That stored energy is what pushes water out of your taps without a pump.
