Let Us Assess & Extended Activities – Solutions

All eight end-of-chapter questions with model answers. You will find the inference from each cathode-ray observation, three atoms worked out step by step (sulphur, aluminium and phosphorus) with their orbit diagrams drawn as in the book, a pair-picker for isotopes and isobars, a matching game for the scientists, and the carbon isotopes used to date fossils. After them come the four extended activities തുടർപ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ: a slide outline for your presentation, an interactive timeline, a table of radioactive isotopes with an article plan, and questions for an imaginary interview with Rutherford.

📖 What you need (pages 4–10 of this guide)

Question 1 · Cathode rays: from observation to inference

Some observations from experiments with cathode rays കാഥോഡ് രശ്മികൾ are given. Write the inference from each observation.

A paddle wheel നേർത്ത ഇതളുകളുള്ള ചക്രം placed in the path of the cathode rays rotates.
When an object is placed in the path of the cathode rays, a shadow നിഴൽ is formed.
When an electric field വൈദ്യുതമണ്ഡലം is applied perpendicular to the path, the rays bend വ്യതിചലിക്കുക towards the positive plate.

Ask what each observation needs. What does it take to push a wheel round? When does an object cast a sharp shadow? What is attracted to a positive plate?

🧪 Try it – the three experiments in a discharge tube

The electrons are drawn as dots and slowed down a lot. Real cathode rays are invisible. You see only the glow where they hit the zinc sulphide coating at the far end.

⚠ Discharge tubes run on very high voltage. They are for teacher demonstration only, so never try to make or open one.
ObservationInference
(a) The paddle wheel rotates.Cathode rays are made of particles that have mass (and so they can push the wheel).
(b) An object in the path casts a shadow.Cathode rays travel in straight lines.
(c) In an electric field they bend towards the positive plate.Cathode-ray particles are negatively charged. (Unlike charges attract.)
Together these show that cathode rays are a stream of negatively charged particles with mass: electrons.

Question 2 · Atomic number 16, mass number 32

The atomic number of an atom is 16 and its mass number is 32.

How many electrons, protons and neutrons does this atom contain?
Write the electron configuration ഇലക്ട്രോൺ വിന്യാസം of this atom.
Draw its orbit (shell) diagram.
🎬 Step by step – building the atom
(a) Protons = atomic number = 16. Electrons = protons = 16 (the atom is neutral). Neutrons = A − Z = 32 − 16 = 16.
(b) Electron configuration: 2, 8, 6 (K 2, L 8, M 6).
(c) Orbit diagram: a nucleus marked 16p 16n, with 2 electrons on the first ring, 8 on the second and 6 on the third (the final step of the animation above). The atom is sulphur, 3216S.
⚠️ How to draw it in the exam

Draw the nucleus in the centre and write 16p and 16n inside it. Draw three circles around it and put the electrons on the circles: 2, 8, 6. Never put electrons inside the nucleus.

Question 3 · Electrons in K, L and M

An atom has electrons in its K, L and M shells ഷെല്ലുകൾ.

Which of these shells has the highest energy?
If the M shell has only 3 electrons, write the atomic number of this atom.
How many electrons are there in this atom?
If the nucleus of this atom has 16 neutrons, what is its mass number?

Energy increases as you go further from the nucleus. If electrons have reached the M shell, then the K and L shells below it must already be full.

🎬 Step by step – shells, energy and numbers
(a) The M shell. It is the furthest from the nucleus, and the energy of the shells increases with distance from the nucleus (K < L < M).
(b) Electrons reach M only after K and L are full, so the configuration is 2, 8, 3. Atomic number = 2 + 8 + 3 = 13.
(c) Number of electrons = 13 (equal to the number of protons in a neutral atom).
(d) Mass number = protons + neutrons = 13 + 16 = 29.
🔎 Go further

Element 13 is aluminium. Almost all the aluminium in nature is 2713Al (14 neutrons), the atom of Question 4. An aluminium atom with 16 neutrons, 2913Al, is a radioactive isotope that lasts only minutes. For the exam, just do the arithmetic: A = Z + number of neutrons.

Question 4 · Read the orbit diagram

The orbit diagram of an atom is shown.

What is the mass number of this atom?
Write its electron configuration.
🔍 The diagram from the book – count shell by shell
nucleus (protons p, neutrons n)orbits (shells)electrons
(a) Mass number = protons + neutrons = 13 + 14 = 27.
(b) Electron configuration: 2, 8, 3. (Z = 13, so the atom is aluminium, 2713Al.)

Question 5 · Pick the isotopes and the isobars

The symbols of some elements are given: 2412Mg, 126C, 157N, 146C, 2411Na

Pick out a pair of isotopes from these and give the reason for your choice.
Pick out a pair of isobars from the elements given.
🧩 Pair picker – tap any two symbols
Tap two symbols to compare them.
(a) Isotopes: 126C and 146C. Reason: both have the same atomic number (6, so both are carbon) but different mass numbers (12 and 14). They differ only in the number of neutrons (6 and 8).
(b) Isobars: 2412Mg and 2411Na. They have the same mass number (24) but different atomic numbers (12 and 11), so they are atoms of different elements.
🔎 Go further – isotones

157N and 146C both have 8 neutrons (15 − 7 = 8 and 14 − 6 = 8). Atoms with the same number of neutrons are called isotones ഐസോടോണുകൾ (the side box on textbook page 20).

Question 6 · Match the columns

Match column A with column B.

Draw the orbit diagram of this element.
🎬 Step by step – phosphorus
Configuration: 15 = 2 + 8 + 5, so 2, 8, 5.
(a) Outermost electrons = 5 (in the M shell).
(b) Neutrons = A − Z = 31 − 15 = 16.
(c) Orbit diagram: a nucleus marked 15p 16n with 2, 8 and 5 electrons on three rings (the last step above). The element is phosphorus, 3115P.

Question 8 · The isotope that dates fossils

An isotope of an element is used to find the age of fossils ഫോസിലുകളുടെ കാലപ്പഴക്കം.

Which is this isotope?
What are the other two main isotopes of this element?
Write the number of neutrons in each isotope.
🎬 The three carbon atoms side by side (Fig 1.11)
(a) Carbon-14, 146C. It is radioactive.
(b) Carbon-12, 126C, and carbon-13, 136C.
(c) Neutrons = A − Z: carbon-12: 12 − 6 = 6; carbon-13: 13 − 6 = 7; carbon-14: 14 − 6 = 8.

How carbon-14 dating actually works is shown on page 13.
