Homologous Series
Line up the alkanes in order – methane, ethane, propane, butane … – and look at their formulas. Each one is the one before it plus exactly one carbon and two hydrogens. It is like a family where every younger child is the older one with one extra –CH₂– link added to the chain. Such a family is called a homologous series ഹോമലോഗസ് ശ്രേണി. On this page you find the –CH₂– difference yourself, watch a ladder grow one –CH₂– at a time, and see why members of one family behave alike.
- Alkanes ആൽക്കെയ്നുകൾ have only single bonds: general formula പൊതുവാക്യം CₙH₂ₙ₊₂ (page 4).
- Alkenes ആൽക്കീനുകൾ have a C=C double bond: CₙH₂ₙ. Alkynes ആൽക്കൈനുകൾ have a C≡C triple bond: CₙH₂ₙ₋₂ (page 5).
- A molecular formula തന്മാത്രാസൂത്രം such as C₃H₈ tells you how many atoms of each element are in one molecule; a condensed formula കണ്ടൻസ്ഡ് ഫോർമുല such as CH₃–CH₂–CH₃ also shows how they are joined (page 2).
1. Ethane and propane – spot the difference
Q (page 160). (ആൽക്കെയ്ൻ, ആൽക്കീൻ, ആൽക്കൈൻ) Analyse the molecular formulas C₂H₆ and C₃H₈. To which group do they belong?
Q (page 160). What is the general formula of this group?
Cover the boxed group in propane with your finger: what is left looks just like ethane. The box holds 1 carbon and 2 hydrogens.
Table 8.5 (page 160). What is the difference in the number of carbon and hydrogen atoms between C₂H₆ and C₃H₈? Fill in the empty boxes and press Check.
Q (page 160). Are you convinced that the difference in carbon and hydrogen atoms is –CH₂–?
Q (page 160). Is the difference between C₄H₁₀ and C₅H₁₂ of this group the same?
2. Alkenes and alkynes follow the same rule
In the same way, check the difference in the number of carbon and hydrogen atoms between any two neighbouring alkenes, and between any two neighbouring alkynes.
Q (page 160). What is the difference in the numbers of carbon and hydrogen atoms? Then choose the general formula of each family.
The drawing checks itself: every carbon must show exactly 4 bonds, and the formula it counts must match the general formula. Watch the readout: every step adds 1 C and 2 H, whatever the family.
3. What is a homologous series?
A series of compounds like this is called a homologous series. Its members are called homologues (go further: "homo" = same, "logos" = ratio or relation).
A series of organic compounds that can be represented by one general formula, and in which neighbouring members differ by one –CH₂– group, is called a homologous series.
Features of a homologous series
- All members can be represented by one general formula.
- Neighbouring members differ by one –CH₂– group.
- The members show similar chemical properties.
- Their physical properties change gradually (step by step).
Chemical reactions happen at the bonds. All alkanes have only C–C and C–H single bonds, so they react in the same ways (for example, they all burn in air to give carbon dioxide and water – that is why methane, propane and butane are all used as fuels). All alkenes have a C=C double bond, so they behave like one another. Adding one more –CH₂– makes the molecule longer, but does not change the kind of bonds.
Boiling points are approximate values from data books (go further – you do not need to learn them). Notice the pattern instead: the bars climb step by step, and at room temperature C₁–C₄ are gases and C₅ onwards are liquids, just as Table 8.2 said. LPG (mainly butane) is a gas in the room but liquefies easily under pressure in the cylinder.
4. In-text questions (page 161)
Q1 (page 161). The molecular formulas of some hydrocarbons are given: C₂H₄, C₂H₆, C₃H₄, C₃H₈
a. Which of these belong to the same homologous series? Tap the two, then check.
Why not the others? C₂H₄ is an alkene (CₙH₂ₙ) and C₃H₄ is an alkyne (CₙH₂ₙ₋₂): they belong to different families. Also C₂H₄ and C₃H₄ differ by one C and no H, which is not –CH₂–.
b. Write the general formula of this homologous series.
Q2 (page 161). The molecular formulas of some hydrocarbons in the same homologous series are given: C₂H₂, C₃H₄, C₄H₆, A, B
a. Write the molecular formulas of A and B. (Type C5H8 – the page turns the digits into subscripts when it checks.)
b. (ആൽക്കെയ്ൻ, ആൽക്കീൻ, ആൽക്കൈൻ) To which group do these compounds belong?
c. What is their general formula?
d. Draw the structure of compound A. Try it in your notebook first: 5 carbons in a chain, a triple bond between the first two, then give every carbon 4 bonds.
The idea works for every family of organic compounds. The alcohols CH₃–OH, CH₃–CH₂–OH, CH₃–CH₂–CH₂–OH … also differ by –CH₂– each time (general formula CₙH₂ₙ₊₁OH). You will meet this again in the extended activities (page 11).
- "Neighbouring homologues differ by CH₃" ✗ – the difference is –CH₂– (1 C and 2 H).
- Putting C₂H₄ and C₂H₆ in one series because both have 2 carbons ✗ – members of one series have different numbers of carbons and the same general formula.
- Thinking homologues have the same physical properties ✗ – their chemical properties are similar; physical properties such as boiling point change gradually.
- Writing B = C₆H₈ ✗ – each step adds two hydrogens: C₄H₆ → C₅H₈ → C₆H₁₀.

5. Check yourself
- C₂H₆ and C₃H₈ (alkanes, CₙH₂ₙ₊₂) differ by 1 C and 2 H = –CH₂– (Table 8.5). So do C₄H₁₀ and C₅H₁₂, the alkenes C₃H₆ / C₄H₈ (CₙH₂ₙ) and the alkynes C₂H₂ / C₃H₄ (CₙH₂ₙ₋₂).
- Homologous series ഹോമലോഗസ് ശ്രേണി: one general formula; neighbours differ by –CH₂–; similar chemical properties; gradual change in physical properties.
- In-text: C₂H₆ and C₃H₈ are in one series (CₙH₂ₙ₊₂). In C₂H₂, C₃H₄, C₄H₆, A, B: A = C₅H₈, B = C₆H₁₀, alkynes, CₙH₂ₙ₋₂; A is CH≡C–CH₂–CH₂–CH₃.
