IUPAC Naming of Hydrocarbons ഹൈഡ്രോകാർബണുകളുടെ നാമകരണം
Chemists in Kochi, Tokyo and Zurich all call CH₃–CH₂–CH₃ by the same name: propane. That is possible because one international body sets the naming rules. The good news: for the hydrocarbons in this chapter, a name is just two pieces glued together – a word root പദമൂലം that counts the carbons, and a suffix പ്രത്യയം that tells the kind of bond. Learn ten roots and three suffixes and you can name thirty compounds. Then use the name machine to go both ways: structure → name and name → structure.
1. Who decides the names? നാമകരണം
മൂലകങ്ങളുടെയും സംയുക്തങ്ങളുടെയും നാമകരണം International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) യുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിലാണ് തീരുമാനിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്. കാർബണിക സംയുക്തങ്ങളുടെ നാമകരണത്തിന് IUPAC ചില നിയമങ്ങൾ ആവിഷ്കരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. The naming നാമകരണം of elements and compounds is decided under the leadership of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). IUPAC has framed rules for naming organic compounds. Let us learn some of them.
IUPAC – the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry – is the international organisation that works to keep chemistry moving with new developments around the world and to make chemistry's contribution to humanity's progress. It was formed in 1919, and its headquarters is at Zurich, Switzerland (as printed in the textbook).
The naming of elements and compounds, the standard values of atomic masses and physical constants, and the acceptance of new terms are all decided under IUPAC's leadership.
Go further: IUPAC is registered in Zurich, while its secretariat (day-to-day office) works from North Carolina, USA. For the examination, write what the textbook says.
Q (page 162). ഒരു ഹൈഡ്രോകാർബണിന്റെ നാമകരണത്തിന് എന്തെല്ലാമാണ് പ്രധാനമായും പരിഗണിക്കേണ്ടത്? What must mainly be considered when naming a hydrocarbon?
- the number of carbon atoms കാർബൺ ആറ്റങ്ങളുടെ എണ്ണം → gives the word root;
- the nature of the bonds between the carbon atoms കാർബൺ ആറ്റങ്ങൾക്കിടയിലുള്ള രാസബന്ധനങ്ങളുടെ സ്വഭാവം (single, double or triple) → gives the suffix.
2. Word roots: counting the carbons പദമൂലം
കാർബൺ ആറ്റങ്ങളുടെ എണ്ണം സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്ന സംഖ്യകളുടെ അടിസ്ഥാനത്തിൽ പദമൂലങ്ങൾ (Word root) സ്വീകരിക്കുന്നു. Word roots are chosen according to the number of carbon atoms.
1 to 4 are old names – learn them with a sentence: "My Elephant Prefers Bananas" (meth, eth, prop, but).
5 to 10 are counting words you already know from shapes and words: pentagon (5 sides), hexagon (6), heptagon (7), octopus (8 arms), nonagon (9), decade (10 years).
3. Naming alkanes – root + "ane" ആൽക്കെയ്നുകളുടെ നാമകരണം

Q (page 164). ആൽക്കൈനുകളുടെ നാമകരണരീതി എന്താണ്? What is the method of naming alkynes?
Q (page 164). Prop (പ്രൊപ്പ്) + yne (ഐൻ) → ……
Q (page 164). 4 മുതൽ 10 വരെ കാർബൺ ആറ്റങ്ങളുള്ള ആൽക്കൈനുകളുടെ IUPAC നാമം എഴുതുക. Write the IUPAC names of the alkynes with 4 to 10 carbon atoms (molecular formula CₙH₂ₙ₋₂).
IUPAC name = word root (number of carbons) + suffix (kind of bond)
single bonds only → -ane (alkanes) · a C=C double bond → -ene (alkenes) · a C≡C triple bond → -yne (alkynes)
6. The name machine – both ways
Reverse mode reads the name from the end: the last three letters give the bond (ane / ene / yne), what is left must be one of the ten word roots. The drawing then checks that every carbon has exactly 4 bonds.
From 4 carbons on, the double or triple bond can sit in different places: CH₂=CH–CH₂–CH₃ and CH₃–CH=CH–CH₃ are both C₄H₈. Full IUPAC names add a number for the first carbon of the multiple bond, counting from the end nearer to it: but-1-ene and but-2-ene; CH≡C–CH₂–CH₂–CH₃ is pent-1-yne. In this class, names without numbers (butene, pentyne) are accepted, and all the chains on this page have the multiple bond at the first carbon.
- Calling CH₂=CH–CH₃ "propane" ✗ – check the bond first: -ane single, -ene double, -yne triple. It is propene.
- Mixing up hex (6) and hept (7) – think hexagon and heptagon.
- "Methene" or "methyne" ✗ – with one carbon there is no carbon–carbon bond, so there is only methane.
- Counting the hydrogens to choose the root ✗ – the root counts carbons only.

7. Check yourself
- IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, formed 1919, headquarters Zurich, Switzerland as printed) decides the names.
- Naming depends on the number of carbons (word root: meth, eth, prop, but, pent, hex, hept, oct, non, dec) and the kind of bond (suffix).
- Alkanes: root + ane (methane … decane, Table 8.6). Alkenes: root + ene (ethene, propene … decene, Table 8.7). Alkynes: root + yne (ethyne, propyne … decyne, Table 8.8).
